In Memory of President Jimmy Carter
We are deeply grateful for President Carter's lasting legacy on the School of Medicine. As a steadfast advocate for rural healthcare, his vision and support were instrumental in founding the School in 1982 and opening our first Mercer Medicine rural clinic in Plains. His contributions have had a profound impact, and his memory will continue to inspire us. Read more about President Carter's indelible legacy at Mercer on The Den:

Tips to Feel a Sense of Belonging in the New Year
To feel a sense of belonging, it’s essential to actively contribute to creating inclusive learning spaces for both yourself and your peers. Here are a few ways to get started:
-
Engage in peer support: Medical school can be intense, and building a strong support network is key. Don’t just focus on academics—take the time to build genuine, lasting relationships with your classmates. This year, aim to connect with others on a deeper level and create a network of mutual support that goes beyond just studying
-
Foster inclusive learning environments: When you work to create a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere, you not only strengthen your own sense of belonging but also help others feel seen and respected.
-
Prioritize wellness: Belonging isn’t just about fitting in with others; it’s also about feeling at home with yourself. The pressures of medical school can take a toll on your mental and emotional health, which can affect how connected you feel to the school community. Make a resolution to prioritize your wellness this year—whether through mindfulness, exercise, or simply socializing with friends.

Three Kings Day - El Dia de los Reyes
Three Kings Day, also known as Epiphany and El Dia de los Reyes in Spanish, is a holiday celebrated mostly in Europe and Latin America. It commemorates the gospel account relating to the visit of the three magi (wise men) to the baby Jesus.
According to Latin culture, January 6 marks the visit of three different men to Jesus—Melchior (representing Europe), Gaspar (representing Arabia) and Balthazar (representing Africa). The first is believed to have arrived by horse, the second by camel, and the third by elephant. They brought gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, respectively. The holiday is filled with a wide array of traditions. In many countries, families set out snacks for the kings and their camels the night before, then celebrate on January 6 by opening gifts and sharing a family meal. In some countries, it is customary to make Rosca del Rey, a sweet bread that represents the kings’ crowns, arroz con dulce, and other traditional treats.
