Issue 47 | May 2024
There were millions of Germans in the 1930s who didn’t like where their country was going, but kept their heads down and went along. History does not respect their decision. There were millions of Americans in the 1950s who hated Joe McCarthy and the Red Scare but never spoke up. They became known as the Silent Generation. It wasn’t a compliment.

We are not, yet, at the point of societal breakdown or civil war and we need never be—if we take a stand now. Don’t be silent. Speak up. In whatever way you are capable. Run for office, write letters and postcards, organize in your neighborhood. Donate.

FL Abortion Ban Takes Effect
Reproductive Freedom on the Ballot
As of today, May 1, 2024, women in Florida are now saddled with one of the most restrictive abortion bans in the nation, thanks to the Republican legislature, Governor Ron DeSantis, and Donald Trump’s 3 Supreme Court appointees. The new extreme 6-week ban allows virtually no exceptions, and will put women’s lives at risk. This ban is deeply unpopular with the majority of Floridians. Polls show that over 67 percent of Floridians support abortion access.

But we can take back our freedom! After over 1 million Floridians signed the petition to put an amendment to preserve reproductive freedom on the ballot, the Florida Supreme Court agreed to allow it. It takes approval by 60% of voters to pass.

However, even if it passes, we can’t trust a Republican legislature to honor the wishes of the electorate. (Remember when we passed an amendment restoring voting rights lost to felons who returned to the community? The amendment was gutted by the legislature.) So, we need to do more than pass this = amendment. We need to elect Democrats—to the Florida legislature, and the US Congress. We need to reelect President Joe Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris who have promised that with a Democratic Congress they will restore the protections of Roe v. Wade nationwide.
Florida Is Winnable! Joe Biden Tells Us How

President Joe Biden came to Florida last week to tell us that we can win in Florida! He appeared in Tampa with Senate candidate Debbie Powell, a week ahead of the state’s restrictive 6-week ban on abortion taking effect. He noted that since the Dobbs decision, men and women across the country have come out in record numbers, voting to protect reproductive freedom. Speaking to an audience of supporters and campaign workers, he challenged them to “add Florida to that list” this November and asked “are you ready to do that?” Then, he outlined what is needed to reach that goal. “You’ve got to show up and vote. Folks, let’s get this done. Go to JoeBiden.com. Sign up, get involved talk to your families and friends, organize your community, register voters, get them out to vote, do it the old-fashioned way. Call them up on election day. . .do you need a ride to the polls? It’s knocking on doors, it’s sending out postcards, it’s going around and seeing that people have rides to the polls.”

Here in Lee County, we can do all these things, and also go one better by encouraging people not to wait until election day, but to sign up for vote-by-mail and vote early.

The Infrastructure Act Helps Florida & Lee County

Florida Governor DeSantis, Lee County’s Congressman Byron Donalds, as well as other Florida Republicans were dead set against the Infrastructure Bill calling it just a lot of pork barrel spending to benefit blue states.
DeSantis complained that Florida, as a red state, was shortchanged, dismissing the fact that Texas, a red state, came in second in the nation in total funding under the Act.
What has Florida gotten so far? The White House website lists Infrastructure Law funds that have gone to Florida as of March amounting to $16.2 billion for 593 projects. These include:
• $8.5 billion for transportation to invest in roads, bridges, public transit, ports, and airports. (There are presently 455 bridges and over 3,144 miles of highway in poor condition.)
• $995 million for clean water and water infrastructure-the largest investment in water infrastructure in American history.
• Over $2.1 billion for high-speed internet necessary for business, schools, health care and staying connected. 2.8 billion over five years for public transit, the largest investment in public transit in U.S. history.
• $113.7 million to build out a network of Electric Vehicle chargers
• $392.4 million for clean energy, energy efficiency and power
• $1 billion for Read More
Professional Counselors Needed, not “Chaplains”
By Madelon Stewart

Moms 4 Liberty and the Florida Citizen's Alliance are still, in the name of Parental Rights and Freedom, working tirelessly in Lee County and across the state to take away a parent's right to make educational decisions about which books and curriculum their child can have access to in our public schools. And now, the Florida Legislature, in their wisdom, has passed a bill, supported by these same well-funded groups, offering school districts the choice of having "Chaplains" offering "spiritual guidance" to students during school hours. We all need to understand what having "Chaplains" in our schools will mean in practice. Who will these people be? What kind of training, education, and world outlook will they have?  What does "spiritual guidance" mean and how will anyone know what goes on during these meetings? The students in Lee County are in dire need of trained, professional counselors. But, of course these highly qualified people are not volunteers. There are very few of them and they work with 100's of students each. I don't know about you but lots of us have the notion that these volunteer "chaplains" will soon be touted as substitutes for real professional counselors.
If and when the Lee County School Board discusses "inviting" Chaplains into our schools The Purple Group, Non-Partisan Advocates for Public Schools, Students, Parents and Teachers, will be there. Let's educate ourselves now and be ready to stand up for what is best for students.
To learn more about what this all means, join Rev. Rachel Gunter-Chapard, co-founder of Pastors for Florida Children, who will be speaking on Chaplains in Public Schools at the next Families for Strong Public Schools meeting on May 3 at 3pm.

The Real Message of the Confederate Flag

By Ray Clasen
(As the State of Florida celebrated Confederate Memorial Day last week, our writer reminds us of the real legacy of the Confederacy)
The small town of Hanoverton, Ohio, is in rural Columbiana County some miles southeast of the Akron area. My great-great grandfather, Evan Reeder, was born there in 1840. The town was strongly in favor of abolition and became an important station on the “underground railroad” that provided routes whereby runaway slaves could find shelter and protection as they made their way to Canada and freedom. The town was also home to a large contingent of Quakers, including the Reeder family, who had come to Ohio from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in the early years of the nineteenth century.
Evan married in 1861, but the marriage was not recorded at the local Monthly Meeting because Evan, determined to enlist in the Union army, had left the Quaker faith. More than one hundred men from Hanoverton enlisted during the war, giving this community the distinction of sending more men in defense of the union, by population, than any other township in the country. Evan died of typhoid fever at Fort Monroe in Virginia in August of 1864, leaving his wife to raise their son, my great-grandfather, alone and in poverty.

When they get to heaven, our new breed of MAGA historians can tell Evan Reeder and the more than 360,000 other Union soldiers who lost their lives in the Civil War that the cause they fought for wasn’t “strictly” about slavery. The revisionists Read More
