Congrats to the Beaver Toyota Student of the Week, Skyler Duckworth!
Skyler is in the 8th grade at Mill Creek Academy. He’s involved in school activities like playing in Jazz Band performances, the occasional Debate Club and Math Counts competitions, and he competed in the Science Fair where he won 2nd place. In his spare time he likes to play soccer and work on after school activities. One of the accomplishments he’s most proud of is getting to the world finals competition twice and winning 2nd place in Odyssey of the Mind (a creative thinking competition) at his old school. One of the biggest challenges Skyler faced this year was adjusting to how differently his new school works, such as classes, friends, and curriculum. In the future, Skyler hopes to find his place in clubs to determine what to focus on after high school. He would like to go to a college that supports a science-influenced or analytical major, and will choose whichever college offers him the best scholarship. One thing you may be surprised to learn about Skyler is that when he was in Virginia last year, there was a creek by his house that he caught a few dozen minnows in. He raised and bred them and by the end of the season, he had a couple hundred. He used them to start his own bait business for his local fishing community. Skyler really looks up to his former coach for Odyssey of the Mind, Norman Remchuck. He feels Mr Remchuck, “brought out creativity in me I was not aware of. He helped me build team working skills and I don't think I would be the same without him”. Congratulations, Skyler!
