Exhibit of Historic Solar Eclipse Photographs @ Moriches

When photography debuted in the 19th century, it profoundly changed science. Impartial observation, critical to scientific method, was supported by photography and as cameras "saw" the world differently, new worlds were revealed to scientists. In astronomy, solar eclipses provided the backdrop for groundbreaking discoveries such as helium and Albert Einstein's Theory of Relativity.

Poetry Contest
Now - March 31
Please help us celebrate the 60th Anniversary of Fire Island National Seashore. Write a poem about how nature inspires you and submit it to cgorden@communitylibrary.org. All poems must be original works about nature and must be less than 100 words in length. Poems must be received by March 31st. Winning submissions will be displayed at a Poetry Walk in April co-hosted by the Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library, the National Park Service, and Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge. This is a family friendly event.

Presented by Cornell Cooperative Extension, these classes offer great information and lively discussions. The series runs every Wednesday in March from 12:30pm-2:30pm at our Mastic Beach Branch. Childcare is available (please request it when signing up), and we'll also serve a light breakfast. Plus, there are free prizes at every class!

Buried Long Island: History Set in Stone, by Alyssa Gutierrez @ Moriches

Author Alyssa Gutierrez trekked through colonial-era graveyards from Manhasset to Montauk, uncovering burial sites for rich and poor. Her eye for detail gives readers a stylistic lexicon of headstone carving, while those interred under nameless field markers also get their due. Alyssa will share her fascinating research, imbued with great humor, compassion, and enthusiasm!.
