Devarrow, the creative persona of Canadian folk singer/songwriter and producer, Graham Ereaux, releases a surprise full-length album today, A Long & Distant Wave via Paper Bag Records.

The new album's arrival is accompanied by a pretty new track called “Something About Getting Old” which highlights Graham's falsetto and playfully nods to the previous and the only other single to advance the new album, “Kickin” that featured a video where Graham ages with a comical and rapidly greying hair and beard as the song progresses.

Graham notes, “'Something About Getting Old' was one of the first songs I recorded for A Long & Distant Wave, and helped form the backbone of the record’s vibe and lyrical content. This song was also one of the first times I experimented with ad-libbing lyrics, and in fact, the lyrics of the outro were all done in one take, with no ready-made writing or prompts.”

Devarrow consistently crafts a captivating listening experience that transcends traditional folk boundaries, inviting listeners on a journey through time and memory. Although this is the first new album from Devarrow in five years, Graham has been constantly immersed in songwriting and music-making, so there is much more music coming this year.

Drawing inspiration from a diverse range of artists, from contemporaries like Chris Cohen, Fleet Foxes, and Whitney to classics like Neil Young and Townes Van Zandt, Devarrow crafts a sonic landscape that is both familiar and innovative. Devarrow challenges conventional narratives around art creation with a clear message: he aims to dismantle the notion that art must emerge from a tortured and introspective place dictated by emotions. Instead, he advocates for making art quickly and for the sheer joy of it, without compromising artistic integrity. This perspective is Devarrow's stance on art creation, challenging the notion he feels he adhered to for too long.

While serving as a standalone piece, A Long & Distant Wave is a crucial precursor to upcoming releases scheduled for the latter half of 2024. More updates on new releases and music from Devarrow will follow.

PRAISE FOR DEVARROW:

“Most of the tracks include lively solo canters — for example, the harmonica-fuelled chaos of 'Crashed Cars' or the synth spotlight on 'Repeat' — that rocket the tracks into dynamic new territory.” - Exclaim!

“It’s not about whether or not we need another folk singer; it’s a matter of Devarrow being the folk singer we all need right now.” - Dominionated

“Despite that heavy pull of how to find balance — and peace — in a modern world, Devarrow is playful and cheeky, with the palpable inspiration of Neil Young and Fleet Foxes on such tracks as 'Unwired' and 'Heart Attack.'” - CBCMusic

“Ereaux goes the extra mile on the record, capturing sounds on his phone and laptop to create what he calls a "gritty kind of depressed lo-fi sound" aimed at recording sound on the same devices he consumes information on.” - The Coast
