Excitement Builds for Colorado Southern Regional Science Olympiad with Over 600 STEM Students Anticipated

The Colorado Southern Regional Science Olympiad Tournament is scheduled for Saturday, March 2nd. Drawing in over 600 participants from across Colorado, this profound STEM-focused event takes place on the CSU Pueblo Campus. It's a single-day tournament featuring 16 middle school teams and 25 high school teams. With 46 STEM competitions on the agenda, overseen by a collective of 50 STEM faculty, staff, and community professionals, the activities range from crime-solving and forensics to remote sensing and device testing. Spectators are welcome to observe from the Massari Arena, and admission is free for all.

“This is our 9th year of facilitating the Colorado Southern Regional Science Olympiad tournament at CSU Pueblo,” said Abby Davidson, Director of HSI, STEM Grants (CBASE & MAPS). “It is such a great opportunity to bring Colorado middle school and high school students to campus to have a great day competing in STEM. I've had many competitors and their coaches (typically their science teachers) tell me that competing in the Science Olympiad is the highlight of their school year. We've also received accolades from the National Science Olympiad office, which featured our tournament last year in the national brochure. My hope is that the local community considers coming to campus on March 2nd to check out the tournament to see what it is all about. We would love to see more of our local schools take part in the fun, and CSU Pueblo's Division of Extended Studies will sponsor new teams in the community to join next year!”

REMINDER: Changes to the Aladdin Catering Billing Process

On behalf of Auxiliary Services

This notice is a reminder regarding catering invoice billing and CaterTrax. A change was implemented to the Aladdin Catering Billing Process, these changes went into effect January 2nd, 2024.

Please review the following:

Payment Methods:

All catering bookings will be processed using a P-Card, replacing the use of an index code/account number.

If Order Exceeds P-Card Limit:

If the catering expense is expected to exceed the P-Card limit of $3,000, you will need to contact the Office of Financial Management (Nicole Lara) and request a purchase order. This should be completed at minimum 10 days prior to the event. A purchase order number should be sent to Jerry Carter with Aladdin.

If Your Department Does Not Have a P-Card:

You will need to work with Cabinet-level supervisory authorities to utilize division or other department cards.

Authorized Business Function Forms (ABFFs):

To ensure seamless service, all ABFFs must be submitted at minimum, 10 days prior to the event. Please note that Aladdin has been instructed not to service any catering without the submission of this form or a P-card on file.

Payment Confirmation:

For transactions processed through the P-Card, you will receive a "Paid" invoice upon the completion of your event. This invoice will serve as your official receipt for the transaction.

Questions?

If you have questions or need further clarification on the new billing process, reach out to Josh Gurley at extension 2611.

We appreciate your cooperation and look forward to providing you with an improved catering billing experience.

Participate in a Discussion Forum on Free Speech and Democracy

On behalf of Political Science

Free speech is a Constitutional protected and culturally cherished value in the United States. But there have been recent efforts on both the political left and right to shun, censor, or prohibit disagreeable ideas and viewpoints. Amidst all the discussion of cancel culture, anti-CRT legislation, deplatforming, and book bans, what is the real value of free expression for unpopular or even detestable ideas? Are there limits to free expression, in the name of toleration, resisting hate, or the like? Is so, what are those limits? And what can our culture and/or political systems do to create a better “public forum” for debate and disagreement?

Come discuss these issues and more in one of our “Across the Aisle” Deliberative Forum! On the week of March 4th – 8th we will be hosting a number of small group (4-6 people) student discussion sessions on campus around this very topic. The discussion groups will be constructed and moderated to facilitate honest, respectful dialogue amongst students with different party affiliations and ideological perspectives. These series of discussions are part and parcel to research on cross-party dialogue and its effects on attitudes toward democracy. Participants will be asked in the spring to fill out a short survey before the forum, as well as a short survey afterwards.

Join one of these enlightening and rewarding discussions across the aisle! If you are potentially interested, click the link below, or email Dr. Ryan Strickler for more information.

NEW: Special Topics: Multicultural Literature for Educators

On behalf of the School of Education

Wondering what children’s and young adult literature your classroom needs? How about multicultural literature? Have you ever considered how a lack of culture in the literature in your classroom could lead to continued oppression? Are you intrigued by trends in children’s and young adult literature? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you should enroll in ED 491/ED 591 with a CRN of 53180 (undergraduate) or 53183 (graduate). This is an 8-week, asynchronous online, special topics course that meets the upper division literature requirement for Liberal Study majors (and may work as an elective in others).
