During the pandemic, Americans weren't driving much, though traffic fatalities were on a surge. Regulators had anticipated increased fatalities once commuters went back to work. However, that hasn't been the case, as the fatality rate fell to 1.17 deaths for every 100 million vehicle miles traveled, down from 1.21 a year earlier.
“Reversing the rise in roadway deaths has been a top priority for this Department, so we’re encouraged to see continued reductions in traffic fatalities—yet the overall proportions of this issue remain at crisis levels and there is much more work to do,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg described.
