Wizard of Oz, with a twist

Everyone knows the story of The Wizard of Oz but instead of lions, tigers, and bears (oh my!) we have Jitterbugs, Ghosts, and a talking skeleton. The Wicked Witch has new friends and her same enemies but it isn't ruby slippers that will get Dorothy home. We still have Dorothy's friends at the end of the rainbow (Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion) and even new friends in Gloria and the other girls of Oz.

Our cast has been hard at work and can't wait to show you all the fun we've been working on since the summer. Please join us November 16th and 17th at 7pm and November 19th at 2pm. We are very excited to give a little preview to our elementary school on Wednesday!

Happenings at Healy

CPR training for Healy students

Each year, all Healy students in 8th and 10th grade are provided with Hands-Only CPR training. Last week, Colette Fitterer, BS, ADN, RN, CEN, Take Heart Program Coordinator & ER Nurse with Essentia Health - St. Joseph's Medical Center was onsite to oversee the training along with her ER nursing staff who also helped train our students.

Mr. Toops also teaches students the American Heart Association Heartsaver CPR & AED courses (it covers infant choking as well). This covers infants, children, and adults. His training for students also includes Project Adam -- a Wisconsin-based program that teaches Hands-Only CPR and AED use.

All said, Pierz students get taught by a CPR professional at least twice throughout their high school careers. Thank you to Mr. Toops, the health department at Pierz Schools, and the Take Heart program for making this possible.

Field Trip Opportunities for Healy Students

Quilting

Thirteen students from the Fabrics & Textiles class took a field trip to JoAnn Fabrics in St. Cloud to purchase fabric for their quilts.

Manufacturing

Students in Mr. Gruber's welding and woods classes took a trip to Little Falls to explore local manufacturing careers during MFG Day, a national annual event during which manufacturers open their doors to showcase the potential of modern manufacturing and foster interest in manufacturing careers. The students toured Falls Fabrication and DJ's products, both of Little Falls.

College Touring

On November 7th, 40 students boarded the bus to Bemidji State University. Students were able to learn about the different programs the campus has to offer and also the perks of having a campus close to Bemidji Lake. These perks include access to canoeing, a 17-mile paved trail around the lake for walking, rollerblading and biking, and also walking to class right from your fish house. All perks that pleased our Pierz students!

Students were able to experience eating lunch right on campus. Another bonus to the Bemidji campus is that almost all of the buildings are connected to a tunnel system to avoid walking out in the cold during wintertime. Taking this tour was a great way to expose students to different opportunities after high school.

Happenings at Pioneer Elementary

Generations of Bingo Fun

One of the many benefits of school in a small town is our proximity and relationships with area businesses and facilities. Last week, Mrs. Talberg's 5th Graders headed over to nearby Harmony House to visit with the residents and play Bingo. This inter-generational connection is so important not only for students but for the residents as well.

Next month, our Jazz Band will be providing soothing tunes for the residents at the Pierz Villa.

Exploring Morrison County

Third graders took a trip to Little Falls for various learning opportunities. The first stop was a tour of the Morrison County government center, including a tour of Judge Antoinette Wetzel's courtroom and the 911 dispatch center. This supported their learning of the court system through their reading of "The Trial of Cardigan Jones" in class.

Classes also took time to enjoy Maple Island Park and learn about the hydropower produced at the dam.
