$112 million permit for Warden Station Redevelopment largest of $1.14 billion in January Toronto permits


Toronto recorded building permits valued at $1,133,688,984 in January.


Here is a summary of the five largest permits


$112 million – 701 Warden Ave.


The Warden Station Redevelopment is the largest permit issued in January. The two-storey transit station at the corner of Warden Avenue and St. Clair Avenue East, has been designed by WSP and Strasman Architects Inc. for theToronto Transit Commission. EllisDon is the general contractor.

Commercial real estate outlook steady, says Morguard


The Canadian commercial real estate sector garnered a steady level of interest overall amid economic uncertainties during the fourth quarter of 2023, reports real estate and property management firm Morguard in the company’s 2023 Economic Outlook and Market Fundamentals Fourth Quarter Update.


According to the report, multi-suite residential rental, industrial and retail properties exhibited continued strength and resilience and positive performance momentum. The company says that easing inflation and interest rate pressures will play a role in both the industry and overall economic growth in 2024.

Contract awarded for Eglinton Crosstown West advance tunnel 2 project


Infrastructure Ontario (IO) and Metrolinx have awarded a fixed-price contract of $255 million to STRABAG Inc. to design, build and finance the second underground segment of the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension, which includes a 500-metre tunnel from east of Jane Street to Mount Dennis Station.


The Eglinton Crosstown West Extension Advance Tunnel 2 project underwent an open, fair and competitive procurement process overseen by a third-party fairness advisor. STRABAG Inc.

Ontario challenges U.S. softwood lumber duties, calls for immediate removal


In a recent statement, the Ontario government expressed firm opposition to the current decision by the U.S. Department of Commerce to impose higher duties on Canadian softwood lumber exports.


Graydon Smith, minister of natural resources and forestry, and Vic Fedeli, minister of economic development, job creation, and trade, jointly released the statement, in which the Ontario government is urgently calling for the immediate removal of these duties, citing their detrimental impact on the province’s crucial forest sector.

Black leaders in construction industry paved the way: Campbell


As part of Black History Month, a celebration of the contributions of Black Canadians in the legislature, construction and other sectors was held at Queen’s Park in Toronto Feb. 21.


Sponsored by the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America in collaboration with the International Union of Painters and the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union, the evening featured exhibits, art, live performances and traditional food.


Chris Campbell, director of equity, diversity, and inclusion at the Carpenters’ Regional Council, said the first Black officials in the Ontario legislature paved the way for Black leaders in other industries such as construction.

Ontario announces changes to environmental assessment approval process


The Government of Ontario announced plans to streamline and simplify the 50-year-old environmental assessment (EA) process to make it easier and faster to build infrastructure.


After several months of consultations, one of the changes to the EA process is moving to a project list approach, which will list the types of infrastructure projects that still require the highest level of environmental assessment such as large landfills and electricity generation facilities. The project list approach is a shift from the previous focus on project proponents to what the project is and its potential for environmental effects.

PCL awarded $1.33B contract for CAMH Phase 1D redevelopment


A fixed-price contract of $1.33 billion has been awarded to PCL Partnerships by Infrastructure Ontario (IO) and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) to design, build and finance the CAMH Phase 1D Redevelopment project.


The PCL Partnerships team includes PCL Constructors Canada Inc. as applicant lead and construction team; Diamond Schmitt Architects and Architectural Resources (design team); and TD Securities (financial adviser).
