THE LIFE OF MOSES – LESSON 38

BALAAM’S MESSIANIC PROPHECY

Yesterday I mistakenly cited Exodus 20 for the lesson. It was taken from Numbers 20 and 21. Today we continue from Numbers 22 and forward.

Israel now moved north into Moab and the Amorites’ area. They were positioning for the invasion of Canaan near the north tip of the Dead Sea. They settled in the plain of Moab east of the Jordan River. Midian was next to Moab on its east border. 

The Moabites and Midianites knew of Israel’s exploits and feared them and their vast numbers of over 600,000 fighting men. They felt that they needed divine help to avoid being consumed by Israel.

They came up with a plan. They knew of a proven and renown diviner named Balaam in the city of Pethor, in Babylon on the Euphrates River. The elders of Moab and Midian were sent out by King Balak of Moab to go to Babylon with the rewards of divination (vs. 7) which was customary for diviners. They told their dilemma to Balaam and asked him to come with them to put a curse on Israel. They believed this would help them defeat Israel and drive them out of their land.

Balaam told them to lodge overnight, and he would bring them the word that Jehovah (22:18) would speak to him. God spoke to Balaam and told him not to go with them (vs. 12) because Israel was a blessed people and are not to be cursed.

The elders returned to Balak, King of Moab, and reported Balaam’s refusal. Balak sent them a second time with great promises for Balaam. Again, Balaam refused, telling them in vs. 18 (Young’s Literal version) even “If Balak doth give to me the fulness (all) of his house of silver and gold, I am not able to pass over the command of JEHOVAH my (Elohiym) to do a little or a great thing.”

It is interesting to note that Babylon was the home of the Chaldeans who had a reputation for spiritual discernment. We do not know if Balaam was one of them, but clearly his fame was known throughout many countries, and he did know Jehovah. Now God came again to Balaam and told him to go with the men but say only what word that God would give. It was permission to go, but God was angry over it as it was not really His will.

To make a long story short, Balaam blessed Israel which made King Balak very angry. Balak told Balaam now to flee back to his home. Before Balaam left, however, he prophesied great things for Israel and also prophesied in 24:19 of the Messiah to come out of Israel. He then returned home.  

This blessing came as Israel was camped in the position from which Joshua would later lead them into Canaan. Sometimes the word from God may come from the least expected sources. Always keep your ear tuned to Holy Spirit and your eye on the written word to discern the good word (truth) given from the bad word (lies) given. God can even use an unbeliever to speak a true word prophetically. This I know also from personal experience.

THE QUICKENING POWER OF GOD

1 John 4:4 says, “…greater is He that is in you than He that is in the world.” That is a mouth full. In spite of all of the bad things that we see, and the many attempts to attack us, the enemy Satan is small compared to the power of God in us!  

Romans 8:11 says, “But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, He that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.”

Quicken means to make alive. Can you imagine that? The very dunamis power that raised Jesus from the dead lives in you! Wow. We have that Power in us, and He wants to give us victory each and every day in each and every way.  

Holy Spirit brings life to dead things. All those dreams that may seem dead; your body that might be fighting to stay alive; your finances on the brink of ruin; can be changed by that dunamis power in you and you can tap into it.  

God wants you to have His power in your life. It is a walk of faith to believe for it though. You must retrain your mind to keep fear out and the Word of God in. The more of the Word of God that goes into you, the more power you have. We must take time to plug in to that power. It is a choice. We can choose to go with God and learn more or remain defenseless when the enemy comes.  

Once we learn who we are in Christ everything changes. Yes, there will be battles, but the Holy Spirit will guide us through these hard times, and we triumph through His guidance. Don’t settle for less than all God has for you, my friend. He has given us His power, now we just have to learn how to use it!

PROPHETIC EXHORTATION

Just know that real contentment is NOT in possessing everything; But it IS in giving thanks for everything that you DO possess…And for those precious people you’re so blessed to have in your life. Today as you’re busy running about your day; Take the time to give God thanks for all that He has done for you in your past; And for what He’s about to do for you in your future. Yes, we all need to stop for a moment and smell the roses while they’re still blooming. Just remember one day you will look around and they’ll be wilted and GONE. So be sure you’re not only thankful for your family and your friends; But remember to let them know just how much you love them and appreciate them while you still have them. If you woke up this morning able to get up and put your feet on the floor without any assistance from others; And if you were able to see your loved ones and eat breakfast on your own; Then you my friend are alive and well. So come on and give God some praise; For you are one blessed and highly favored person. “I’ve learned to be content in whatever situation I’m in.” (Phil. 4:11‬b)

Friday A Word Of Encouragement

You are a gift from God. He created you and placed within you every gift you would need. His Love is wrapped up in you. You are the only one who can unwrap that gift that God has given you. For inside, you will find the love He gave you in the form of Jesus. You will find His heartbeat if you will but seek Him. His desire is to have fellowship and covenant relation with His children. It is up to you to choose if you will accept the gift that God is presenting to you today.
