Growing Family Leaders Through

Family Peer Support

February was National Parent Leadership Month. NFF and the Family Peer Specialists that work for NFF affiliates across the nation lift up parent and family leaders each month of the year. Thank you to all of the tireless family leaders that fight for family-driven, person-centered communities through your leadership every single day!

We are excited to see legislation making its way through Congress that would require multiple government agencies to recognize Family Peer Specialists as professionals, offer funding strategies that align with other mental health support professionals, and support the workforce development of family peers. If this legislation passes, it is in part because of the family leadership so many of you have demonstrated!

This month, we've got some great events to support the family peer workforce, including an Office Hour about systems navigation—including navigating systems with transition age and adult children. We're also going to be discussing what moral injury looks like in family peer support and what to do when your organization asks you to participate in something that doesn't align with your values in this month's webinar. Families can now connect twice a month! We also hope to kick off our SAMHSA Webinar Series this month to bring you presentations and conversations about how person-centered, family-driven supports can lead to a path towards equity. In addition to our regular monthly Family Connections events, families are also invited into the Family Room with Sue Badeau for a second chance to be in the presence of each other sharing successes and asking for advice.

If you haven't already submitted a presentation proposal for the next Annual Conference in Orlando, there's still time to gather with your co-presenters and come up with a session proposal to share your knowledge on how to encourage acceptance, advocacy, and action towards a just society with person-centered, family-driven systems and communities!

Social Justice Corner

Mental health and social justice are two important issues that are closely intertwined. Social justice refers to the fair and just treatment of all individuals, regardless of their background or identity. In this blog post, Natural Appraise on Mental Health explores the intersection between mental health and social justice and discusses ways we can all support mental health within social justice efforts.

Legislation and Advocacy:

PEER (Providing Empathetic and Effective Recovery) Support Act (S.2733)

This bipartisan legislation was introduced in the Senate in September by Senators Tim Kaine (D-VA) and Mike Braun (R-IN). The companion House bill was introduced February 1st by Representatives Andrea Salinas (OR-D) and Tracey Mann (KS-R).

Specifically, the PEER Support Act would:

  • Codify the Office of Recovery in the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration to:
  • Train, educate, and support the professional development of peer support specialists—including Family Peer Specialists.
  • Research and publish best practice recommendations for the training, certification, and supervision of peer support specialists for employing entities.
  • Recommend career pathways for peer support specialists.
  • Direct the Office of Management and Budget to revise the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) system to recognize peer support specialists as a profession, which would help ensure accurate data reporting on the field.
  • Instruct the Department of Health and Human Services and Department of Justice to conduct a study to research states’ screening processes for prospective peer support specialists that may pose undue barriers to their certification and to provide evidence-based recommendations for overcoming those barriers. Many prospective peer support specialists cannot get a certified because of their past interactions with law enforcement related to addiction (i.e. convictions for possession of drugs) prior to recovery, even though their past experience recovering from drug use makes them strong advocates for those who are currently in recovery.

NFF has been able to provide feedback on the bill through Senator Kaine’s and Representative Salinas’s offices and is listed as a supporting organization. We will continue to follow the bills and provide you with updates and calls to action.
