In the Footsteps of Dian Fossey

Quintessential Safari Experiences Guided by Dian's Former Research Staff

Sunny Easter Greetings from East Africa!

In this month's newsletter, we would like to present our exclusive Small Group Tours, personally guided by our specialist Tour Leaders comprised of the former research staff and colleagues of the legendary gorilla primatologist, the late Dian Fossey. Our Tour Leaders will share their stories of what it was like working with Dian and provide insights into how mountain gorilla conservation has progressed over the years:

"The impact Dian Fossey has had on gorilla conservation is still felt to this very day. Her research and understanding changed the world’s perception of mountain gorillas and saved them from extinction. For the first time ever, Travulous is pulling back the curtain so our guests can hear the stories, first-hand, from the very people who worked with Dian to make it possible

Richard Pfäffli, Co-Founder of Travulous and former Travel Provider & Tour Consultant for The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund

The work of Dian Fossey, as documented in her book and portrayed in the movie ‘Gorillas in the Mist’, is the stuff of legends. In addition to being led by Fossey’s former research staff, Travulous’ Small Group Tours will also visit the original Karisoke Research Center, the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, and the grave of Dian Fossey, including the gorilla cemetery which was the final resting place of some of her favourite gorillas. In the evenings, you have the opportunity to enjoy after-dinner presentations by renowned Gorilla Conservation Organisations.

Having worked with Dian Fossey in Rwanda at the original Karisoke Research Centre in the 1970s and 1980s, today our Tour Leaders are working at the very forefront of conservation. For example, Ian Redmond, who introduced David Attenborough to the gorillas for the BBC's 'Life on Earth' series, is a conservation advisor for organisations including the Born Free Foundation, the Gorilla Organization, the Orangutan Foundation, and International Fund for Animal Welfare. Ian established and chairs the Ape Alliance and the African Ele-Fund. Another one of our Tour Leaders, Craig Sholley, is the Senior Vice President of the African Wildlife Foundation (AWF). AWF is the Rwandan government’s partner in its flagship program to expand Volcanoes National Park. For the National Geographic Society, Craig surveyed the conservation status of mountain gorillas in Rwanda, Uganda and DRC in 1995.

"If you work in the travel trade and are looking for a true differentiator, then look no further! Travulous' Small Group Tours offer a one-of-a-kind travel experience, which no other travel company in East Africa can provide. Let us inspire you, making it easy for you to plan an unforgettable trip for your customers"

Kristin McGee, Co-Founder of Travulous

Last but not least, we have included in this month's newsletter a video which was recorded at the beginning of 2018, two days after Kristin and Richard had decided to set up Travulous. They were still living in London and although they had every intention of moving to East Africa, they hadn't yet boarded the flight for their new life in Kigali. The video is unprocessed and unedited, and was taken in the midst of setting up a temporary office space until they could move into something more established. From humble beginnings, the video demonstrates how far Travulous has evolved in the space of 6+ years to be named an award-winning DMC by LUXlife magazine.
