A Service of the Imposition of Ashes

Old Trinity Church

Ash Wednesday is the first of the forty days of Lent, the season of penitence and fasting that prepares us for Easter. Ash Wednesday is named for the custom of placing blessed ashes on the foreheads of those worshipers who attend Ash Wednesday services. The ashes are a sign of penitence and a reminder of mortality, and are imposed with the sign of the cross. Old Trinity provides this rite for those of any faith tradition who wish to enter the discipline of Lent with this custom.
