Burning of the Palms

After Pancake Supper, St. Paul's parking lot

All are invited to participate in a special tradition as we prepare our hearts and minds for the Lenten season. On Shrove Tuesday, we will burn the palms from Palm Sunday 2023 to create ash for our Ash Wednesday worship. Do you have palms from past Palm Sundays in your home and wonder what to do with them? Bring them to St. Paul’s on or before February 13 to contribute to this outdoor gathering at the conclusion of the Pancake Supper.

Lent 101 :: Adult Faith Forums

Sunday, February 11, 10:15-11 a.m., Parish Hall

Join the Rev. Beth Scriven for the first in a series of three Lenten forums. This discussion on Lenten practices explains why we do them, how we choose them and how to make them stick.

Sunday, February 25, 10:15-11 a.m., Parish Hall

The Rev. Beth Scriven leads this forum, taking a look at some of the unique theological, historical and liturgical elements of Lent.

Sunday, March 17, 10:15-11 a.m., Parish Hall

Join the Rev. Jeff Bower for a brief culture immersion into the rich Lenten traditions of the Latino community. All will be introduced to the season of Carnival through the Passion.

Lenten Gatherings

Get to know fellow St. Paul’s friends and enjoy some snacks or supper together! Join a small group of people, meeting three times through the end of March, for conversation, a faith-related discussion and short prayers with Lenten themes. Every group will be hosted by a different St. Paul’s household at a different time and place. See details and sign up below. Questions, click here to email the Rev. Beth Scriven

Lenten Walkers

Thursdays, starting February 15, 8-8:45 a.m.

Join others for a morning stroll, walking in the neighborhoods adjacent to St. Paul's. Enjoy some exercise and fellowship together during the season of Lent. Plan to meet on St. Paul's circle drive, unless there is inclement weather (under 25 degrees or an ice event has occurred). Questions, click here to email Sarah Flynn Klein.

Choral Mattins

Sundays, February 25 and March 10, 11:15 a.m., Sanctuary

Join us for the morning version of Choral Evensong with responses, canticles, the psalm and anthem sung by St. Paul's Choir. Communion from the reserved sacrament will be available.

All Parish Coffee Hour :: Refreshment Sunday

Sunday, March 3, 10:15-11 a.m., Parish Hall

St. Paul’s Intergenerational Team offers time for fellowship and offers “refreshment” for what you may have given up for Lent: sodas, snacks, sweets, chocolate, electronics and more! All will explore the practice of some traditions “taking a day off” from their Lenten commitment for one day each week. Share with others what motivates you to observe a Lenten sacrifice in your life, whether that be giving up or taking on something new.

Choral Evensong & Post-Evensong Recital

Sunday, March 10, 4 p.m., Sanctuary

Join us for a service of Evensong. This service represents one day out of the week of Choral Evensongs that St. Paul’s Choir will sing at Ely Cathedral, July 15-21, 2024. Your gracious presence is part of the St. Paul's Choir pilgrimage. Plan to stay for a post-Evensong organ recital from 5-5:20 p.m.

Lenten Family Practice ideas:

We give up something in Lent to make more room for God. Try giving something up or taking on a new practice that opens you and your family up to God a little more during this season.

  • Read the Bible each night or one night/week before bedtime; you could read a Psalm or read from the Gospel of Mark.
  • Choose a book with spiritual resonance for a family read-aloud: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C. S. Lewis or A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle.
  • Create a giving calendar, think of ideas and keep track of ways you care for people, the earth, animals and the church.
  • Spend time outdoors. Lent means lengthen — the days are getting longer. Take walks after dinner.
  • Spend time each Saturday picking up trash in your neighborhood or park.
