In the pulpit

Sunday, February 25

"Of Covenant and Conviction," Rev. Dr. Lynn Ashley

From the time of Moses and the people at Mt. Sinai until today at Albany UU, we humans have expressed through our covenants hopes for how we might live in community. We reflect on a long story, its meaning, and promise.

Sunday, March 3

"Stretching for a New Way," Rev. Linda Hoddy

Have you got a story about something wonderful, or wonder-full, that you were part of, or that happened to you at AUU? If so, I hope you'll share it with me at RevLindaHoddy@albanyuu.org. We will begin this year's Stewardship Campaign on Sunday, March 3. The choir will sing “A New Way” and “‘Tis A Gift to Be Simple,” as well as our traditional “Magic Penny.” We will also hear from one of our young families.

Since I don't know the congregation well, I am looking for stories about something wonderful, or even wonder-full, that happened to you at AUU, or maybe it was a project in service to the larger community. What do you remember about AUU that you treasure?

I will weave the stories together for a sermon or reflection for that Sunday. It could be something recent or something a while ago. It could involve children or old folks or in between. All that's required is that you share the story with me.

I need to receive the stories by Wednesday, Feb 28 via email or you can call the office - (518) 463-7135. I look forward to being uplifted by the wonderful things that have happened here through the years. Don't hide this light under a bushel. Let it Shine!

Transition Updates

Recent Happenings at the Transition Team

The Transition Team has been facilitating and recording Transition Listening Circles (TLC) since February 3. We are pleased to report that as of this writing, 94 people have already participated, and nine more are scheduled. In addition, we plan to hold special TLCs for the youth group, and another for the Staff.

While we are pleased with the results so far, we’re planning an email to everyone asking those who have not yet been heard from to sign up for a new round that will begin shortly. We are serious about wanting to hear from all members and friends of Albany UU.

The next step will be to assemble the notes from all TLC sessions and begin extracting the information they contain into a summary document that we will share with the congregation.

We thank everyone who has participated so far and ask that if you know someone who should be heard from but has not, please encourage them to catch the next round.

How Will We Do Joys & Sorrows Now?

Our trial period for a new approach to our Joys & Sorrows ritual began Sunday, February 11, and will continue for six Sunday services. There will be no open mic for Joys & Sorrows during the trial. If you wish to share your joy or sorrow, you can submit online, or fill out a blue card on Sunday morning. Here’s how it will work:  (READ MORE.)

Flowers for Sunday Mornings

Do you enjoy seeing fresh flowers in Community Hall during the service? Why not donate some yourself? It is easy to do. You can choose any available Sunday and what or who the flowers are commemorating. The Flower Committee can arrange and bring in the flowers. You can take them home after the service! Or, if you prefer, you can arrange the flowers yourself! Look for the signup sheet in Channing Hall and pick your date. Or you can sign up electronically at Albany UU - Sunday Volunteer Sign-up - Google Sheets. If you have any questions, contact Cindee Herrick at herrick1627@gmail.com.

Organ Maintenance and Feedback

The Ministries and Operations Team (MOT) recently found out that the cost to maintain the custom-built pipe organ in the Sanctuary is out of proportion to the organ's use. If you would like to provide respectful input, or put your creative problem-solving skills to use helping the MOT determine next steps in addressing this issue, please communicate with us via this form by March 11. Thanks so much!

Help the Stewardship Team Create an Albany UU Word Cloud

Visit the Stewardship table in March or fill in the online form to help Albany UU create a word cloud containing all the new ways you can imagine church and what you'd like to see more of that we're currently doing. We'll have the table set up in Channing after the service for 4 weeks starting on Sunday, March 3.

Annika Pfluger will put your imaginations into a word cloud and it will be fun over the next few weeks to see which words flow to the center and are in the largest type. That is a way to gauge the most popular ideas... So stop by when you are in the building or submit your thoughts online via the form at https://fuusa.breezechms.com/form/a10f658983 and let's see what appears in the center.

Next Community Breakfast on March 9 - Looking for Good Listeners

Thanks again for all the participation in preparation and being there on the second Saturday of the month for the community breakfast. We are having guests who are presently homeless, some battling addiction or serious illness like cancer, many seeking employment, some on very limited income, etc. Numerous of our guests could benefit from the presence of someone who can just listen to them. Some might be aided by someone who is skilled in job-seeking. Can you help?  We need you to help us continue to “be a good neighbor” to these folks.

Thanks for considering being there on March 9th. Look for more information coming for additional ways you might like to participate such as getting publicity out, setting up tables and chairs for the event, serving food to guests, etc. If you are not yet on the community breakfast participation list and wish to, please contact adminassistant@albanyuu.org. It is great food, too, thanks to Erik vonHausen and Robbin Dzembo. -- Carol Butt

Help Sheridan Prep, Help a Child

We know that children are our greatest asset. We also know that we are not providing all children with the opportunity to achieve their full potential. Albany UU has addressed this problem in a small way by adopting our neighborhood public school, Sheridan Preparatory Academy. In the past 13 years, we have volunteered in the classroom, built a playground, purchased a vacant lot, helped with activities, such as the farmer’s market, and provided considerable funds. In addition to our individual contributions, Albany UU has allocated $4,000 in its annual budget for field trips.

Unfortunately, fear of Covid has caused our help to dwindle. The school has suffered during the pandemic: when school was closed, many students did not have access to computers and internet connections to learn successfully at home. In the neighborhood, housing has continued to deteriorate and violence has increased. Many families who can have moved out. Now is the time to volunteer.

There are many ways to help. Many of us enjoy interacting with students in the classroom, helping small groups with reading, math, or science. The playground stencils we painted are fading and need to be re-painted in the spring. We are planning to develop additional outside play and learning space. Both volunteer work and donations will be needed for this project. The school always needs help with special activities, such as recognizing good attendance. Your help with filling these needs will be greatly appreciated. If you want to volunteer or have ideas, please contact Martha Musser at 518-313-9674 or mussermartha@gmail.com.

Come meet the Social Justice Team!

Sunday, Feb. 25, after service, in Community Hall. The Congregational Life Team invites newcomers and old-timers who would like to know more about Albany UU’s Social Justice Team and their work to attend this new monthly mini-coffee hour in the back of Community Hall.

This smaller and somewhat quieter coffee hour will provide an alternate—but not a replacement—for the coffee hour in Channing Hall. Once a month coffee the Congregational Life Team will introduce members of an Albany UU committee, team or activity who will briefly describe their important aspect of congregational life.

This inaugural mini-coffee hour on Feb. 25 will feature Social Justice Team (SJT) members. Social Justice is an integral part of our faith. SJT supports and encourages the congregation to act for positive social change at local, national and global levels through service, education and advocacy. The Council also provides funding and support to worthy social causes. Join us immediately following services at the back of Community Hall on February 25 for stimulating conversation and refreshments.

UUA Announces 2024 Distinguished Award to Jacqui Williams

The Award for Distinguished Service to the Cause of Unitarian Universalism is one of the most prestigious awards given by the UUA. Recipients of this award have strengthened the institutions of our Association, clarified our message in extraordinary ways, and exemplified what Unitarian Universalism stands for. (You can celebrate her award by resharing this post.)

Your UUA Board of Trustees is proud to announce the recipient of the 2024 Award for Distinguished Service to the Cause of Unitarian Universalism: Jacqui C. Williams. Jacqui was a member of the First Unitarian Society of Albany, NY. Her footprint in our national UU movement was noteworthy, serving on the General Assembly Planning Committee, Presidential Search Committee, Commission on Appraisal, DRUUM, and BLUU. Jacqui was also a facilitator for Beyond Categorical Thinking for more than 20 years. She dedicated her life to combating racism as an educator, trainer, and community activist.

Although Jacqui (1953-2023) will posthumously receive this honor, we invite you to join us in celebrating her life and the profound legacy she bestowed upon Unitarian Universalism.

Finding Julia: Centering Black Women in Antebellum History Discussion

KINDERHOOK, New York – Martin Van Buren NHS and Columbia County Libraries invite the public to join a discussion on the life of Julia Chinn, a remarkable Black woman who was the enslaved wife of Van Buren's Vice President Richard Mentor Johnson.

Her story was suppressed and nearly forgotten until scholar Amrita Chakrabarti Myers embarked on a decade-long search for the truth in the new biography, The Vice President's Black Wife: The Untold Life of Julia Chinn.

Rangers will present topics: Crossing the Color Line - the social construction of race; Keeping the Family Together - the choices Julia made; and the Racist Archive - why don't we know this story?

Join the free discussion in person at the Kinderhook Library on Sunday, February 25th at 2:00 (register by emailing e-mail us) or via zoom, email columbiacountylibraries@gmail.com.

It is with gratitude and humility that we acknowledge that we are learning, speaking and gathering on the ancestral homelands of the Mohican people who are the indigenous peoples of this land. Despite tremendous hardship in being forced from here, today their community resides in Wisconsin and is known as the Stockbridge-Munsee Community. We pay honor and respect to their ancestors past and present as we commit to building a more inclusive and equitable space for all.
