VILLAGE SEEKING APPLICANTS FOR BEAUTIFICATION, HARBOR, HOUSING, AND ZBA COMMISSIONS

The Elk Rapids Village Government is excited to invite all community members with diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and ideas to apply for an array of volunteer positions to aid in the decision-making process of our local government. Elk Rapids is fortunate to have an abundance of highly educated, community-focused people. Serving on a village commission is a fulfilling experience and a great way to give back to our community. The Village Government is seeking volunteers, both new and seasoned, with fresh ideas for the following board/commission positions:

  • Beautification Commission (2 positions open)
  • Harbor Commission (2 positions open)
  • Housing Commission (1 position open)
  • Zoning Board of Appeals (1 position open)

For requirements to serve on each board and commission, please view the bylaws on the board or commission’s page on the Village website.

Please submit an application to kszczypka@elkrapids.org and it will be reviewed by nominating committee members in the order that they are received. HARBOR SURVEY OPEN NOW UNTIL OCTOBER 31

The annual Edward C. Memorial Harbor survey is now live. All community members, boaters, and visitors are encouraged to submit responses. The information gathered will be used to review community insights, and this input will be presented at an upcoming community outreach meeting. The survey will be closing on October 31, 2023. Employers Invited to National Apprenticeship Week Information Sessions

 

NORTHWEST LOWER, MI— Businesses and organizations from across northwest Lower Michigan are invited to attend a variety of apprenticeship information sessions being hosted by Northwest Michigan Works! in celebration of National Apprenticeship Week. 

 

The sessions will include an overview of U.S. Department of Labor registered apprenticeships, the simplified process of developing or growing a program and using apprenticeships to fill workforce gaps. There will be multiple occupations explored with a focus on the childcare and information technology industries. 

 

The information sessions will also include an expert employer apprenticeship panel who will share their apprenticeship experience while answering questions about the practicality of the program. 

 

All types of industries, union and non-union, small or large are encouraged to attend. The workshops will help employers prepare to launch their own customized programs and learn more about Northwest Michigan Works! wraparound services.

 

The information sessions will be held at the locations, dates, and times listed below.

National Apprenticeship Week is held each year to showcase the successes and value of registered apprenticeships. Registered apprenticeships are offered through the U.S. Department of Labor and are a proven training method for employers to build a talent pipeline of highly skilled, educated employees. Northwest Michigan Works! provides technical assistance and administrative support for registered apprenticeships, including development and implementation guidance.

Elk Rapids History Museum to Host Holiday Display as part of ‘White Christmas’


All are invited to join the Elk Rapids Area Historical Society for a special holiday display “Christmas through the Decades: 1910-2023,” at the Museum, 301 Traverse St. (on the corner of Pine Street), beginning Friday, Nov. 3.


The Museum’s exhibit will be open prior to each performance of the Elk Rapids Players’ production of “White Christmas,” at the Historic Elk Rapids Town Hall (401 River St.). The popular play is scheduled to run Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Nov. 3, 4, 5 and Nov. 10, 11 and 12. Performances take place at 7 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 p.m. on Sundays.


To enhance your holiday spirit, the Museum exhibit will be open from 4-7 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and noon to 2 p.m. on Sundays before the play. Additionally, it will be open Saturday, Nov. 25 from 1-4 p.m. The display will include Christmas trees, vintage ornaments, and other seasonal items. There is no charge to view the exhibit, but donations are always welcome.

Class times are 11 a.m. Create your own beautiful wreath ($55) or porch pot ($55) in this fun workshop. The wreath class fee includes wreath form, greens, and natural bits. Porch pot class includes a black pot with soil, greens, and red twigs.  Other embellishment items are available for purchase. Classes are held in our greenhouse, so we recommend dressing in layers. Please bring your own garden gloves and pruners. We will have some for purchase if you need them.

Lions Club Accepting Fall Grant Applications


The Elk Rapids Lions Club is currently accepting Organizational Grant Request applications this fall for community projects that support the Club's mission of "serving the community." 

Applications will only be accepted if they are received between now and Wednesday, Nov 1, 2023.

The Organizational Grant Requests should be from Elk Rapids and surrounding areas.

“This process gives us the ability to proactively fundraise over and above our annual events as we become aware of special community needs,” said Lions President Shirley Hill.

Owl Prowl 

Friday, October 27, 2023 - 7:00pm (1.5 hrs), $10 per person, must pre-register 

Join us as we learn about our local owls and their conservation with an introductory presentation, and then head out for a night hike in search of these amazing birds. Participants should be comfortable walking outdoors at night for about 1 mile on uneven trails. Bring a light. $10 per person. Must pre-register. No walk-in spaces available.

National Writer's Series Fall Writing Class for Middle Schoolers

Dates: 10/12, 10/19, 10/26, 11/2, 11/9, 11/16

Format: Cherryland Middle School (Elk Rapids) and Online via Zoom

Time: 5:30-7:30 pm

Class Size: 12-15

Grade Level: Middle School; 5-8th Grades

Where do poems and stories come from? This class will explore the various and many sources of inspiration and how to channel them into stories and poems. We will experiment with using objects, memories, found language, music, video, visual arts, and more as sources to create work of our own.
