In Memory of Larry Vander Tuig

Larry was instrumental in the growth and success of the Big “I” during his long career as Executive Director of the Association. Larry started his career with Equitable of Iowa in 1964 as a life insurance agent, ultimately landing at the Independent Insurance Agents of Iowa in 1972 where he advanced into the role of Executive Director until 2002 when he retired. There, he also served as President of the Independent Insurance Agents Association Executives, and the Iowa Society of Association Executives, as well as serving on many task forces and committees for the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of America. At that time, he managed one of the largest associations in the country. Larry often advocated for insurance education, maintaining and running many programs needed by association members. He reminisced of his career with pride and fondness. Larry loved the insurance business, building relationships, planning big events, engaging with his “incredible” staff, and traveling with his peers and their families to national conferences. Funeral services for Larry will be announced at a later date.

The 2024 Young Agents Conference will be held on Wednesday, May 1st & Thursday, May 2nd. The event will be held at the Hotel Rewind in West Des Moines. Our Young Agents Committee have been working hard on planning this event and we hope to see many of you in attendance. Last year’s event was great and we hope to have more of the same and make this year’s conference even better. We will be finalizing details soon so check our website and your emails for further information. If you have attended the event in the past, tell your friends. New to the industry or current agent 40 years old and younger, come check it out.

Spring is around the corner. Now is a good time to consider how you will be using your marketing dollars. For a great value and exposure within your community, please consider the Commitment to Community marketing program.

The Commitment to Community Marketing Reimbursement Program runs 9/1/23 – 8/15/24. All community involvement activities submitted for reimbursement consideration need take place within that time frame, unless otherwise approved

Click HERE (please link to CtoC on our website) for program details. For a second year in a row, the IIAI Board has agreed to a maximum eligible reimbursement of $1,000 per agency. Reimbursement is rewarded based on order of application receipt. The total campaign budget is again $25,000. We would love to hit that amount so put on your thinking caps or perhaps you already have activities that could qualify!

If you have questions if your event qualifies, submit your application/advertising mock-ups or scripts to Brenda Kluger at Brenda@iiaiowa.org for pre-approval. Please note that the following mandatory requirements are still in place:

ALL event promotion must use Trusted Choice® logo or mention Trusted Choice® if doing a radio/television/podcast

• Trusted Choice® logo must be present on agency Websites and Facebook pages

If you need assistance with signage mockups, we have some set layouts or can possibly assist with customization if needed. Contact Nicole Peffers at Nicole@iiaiowa.org for assistance.

Nominations Open & Save the Date for Iowa Insurance Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

On March 31, the Iowa Insurance Hall of Fame will celebrate its 30th Anniversary!

Since 1994, we have had the honor of inducting 124 Iowa insurance professionals into the Hall of Fame. Your help is needed to continue this tradition by helping contribute to the pool of candidates. Nominations are now being accepted through June 2024. The online nomination form can be found here. The list of past inductees can be found here.

The Iowa Insurance Hall of Fame not only focuses on the achievements of individuals in the industry, but also on perpetuating the future of the industry by awarding scholarships to those who’s field of study align with insurance. The amount and number of scholarships has increased over the years and last year saw a total of 11 scholarships awarded. Scholarship recipients from Drake University, the University of Iowa, the University of Northern Iowa, and Iowa State University attended last year’s event.

The 2024 Iowa Insurance Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be held on Tuesday, October 8th at 5:30pm at The Meadows at Prairie Meadows in Altoona. Those of you in attendance at last year’s event, know what an awesome evening it was honoring outstanding members of the insurance industry, as well recognizing increasing the number of scholarship recipients.

2024 Big “I” Legislative Conference

Several agents from the state will be in Washington, DC on April 10th-12th to discuss topics important to agents all across Iowa. Congratulations go out to Erin Dop from the Fullenkamp Agency in West Point as she was awarded a scholarship to attend from IIABA. We have appointments set with all of our legislators and will be discussing several key issues affecting agents today. Some of those topics will include:

Oppose Tax Increases on Main Street America

The Big “I” supports The Main Street Tax Certainty Act (S. 1706 & H.R. 4721), which would make permanent the 20% small business deduction (Section 199A of the U.S. tax code) passed as part of the 2017 Tax Cuts & Jobs Act. The deduction, which is scheduled to expire at the end of 2025, is heavily relied upon by many Big “I” members to keep their agencies operating, meet payroll, and better serve consumers and their communities. Address the Insurance Market Crisis by Cracking Down on Lawsuit Abuse and Encouraging Risk Mitigation Although the property/casualty (p/c) insurance market is cyclical and expectedly fluctuates between what are known as hard and soft markets, we are currently amid a property insurance crisis that is unprecedented in nature.

Address the Insurance Market Crisis by Cracking Down on Lawsuit Abuse and Encouraging Risk Mitigation

Although the property/casualty (p/c) insurance market is cyclical and expectedly fluctuates between what are known as hard and soft markets, we are currently amid a property insurance crisis that is unprecedented in nature. Appropriate and suitable p/c insurance is simply unaffordable for millions of Americans, and it is altogether unavailable for a growing universe of families, businesses, and individual consumers. These crisis conditions are not limited to areas traditionally associated with natural disasters. They are now ubiquitous and found in every corner of the country, and they are producing troubling repercussions and ripple effects throughout our economy. This pressure is particularly challenging for independent agents as they attempt to secure p/c coverage for their clients and explain significant rate fluctuations while keeping their own businesses operational.

Protect the Federal Crop Insurance Program (FCIP)

As Congress negotiates a new five-year Farm Bill it is critical to support policies strengthening the stability and effectiveness of the FCIP. Crop insurance is a critically important risk management tool that helps farmers navigate the challenges posed by weather disasters, supply chain disruptions, and uncertain markets. The Big “I” supports a strong and robust FCIP that provides certainty for farmers and communities and is strongly opposed to any legislative or regulatory efforts to reduce FCIP funding in the new Farm Bill or otherwise weaken the efficient and effective private sector delivery of crop insurance.

Extend and Reform the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP)

The Big “I” strongly supports reauthorization of the NFIP before its expiration and recognizes the importance of a modernized program to increase take-up rates in both the NFIP and the private market. Specifically, the Big “I” supports H.R. 900, which would allow private flood insurance to satisfy continuous coverage requirements and ensure that consumers who leave the NFIP for the private market, but are later forced to return, can do so without penalty. The Big “I” also opposes any policies that would harm the Write-Your-Own (WYO) Program (including WYO reimbursement reductions) and undermine the valuable and trusted role that independent agents play in the offering, sale, and servicing of flood insurance. Finally, it is essential for FEMA to communicate with agents more clearly so they can explain rate setting and changes in premiums to their customers now that Risk Rating 2.0 has been fully implemented.
