The annual appeal is part of the bank’s charitable giving program, The Giving Tree, which reflects the bank’s commitment to making a real difference in the neighborhoods it serves.

Second Chance Named 2023 Top-Rated Nonprofit

GreatNonprofits Award Based on Community Recommendations

EAST BROOKFIELD, MA (OCTOBER 20, 2023) Second Chance Animal Services announced today it has been named a “2023 Top-Rated Nonprofit” by GreatNonprofits, the leading website for community recommendations of charities and nonprofits. Second Chance offers programs and services that help over 44,000 pets a year to live better lives.

“We are honored to be named a 2023 Top-Rated Nonprofit,” says Chief Development Officer Lindsay Doray. “We are proud of our accomplishments this year. The importance of our work has never been more pronounced as the economy continues to take a toll on pets in our communities. At our vet hospitals, more pet owners are relying on subsidized rates than ever before to care for their cherished companions. Meanwhile our shelter is taking in local surrenders at a rate not seen in over a decade.

The Top-Rated Nonprofit Award is based on the rating and number of reviews that Second Chance received from volunteers, donors, and aid recipients. In one review, a volunteer shared “I have been a volunteer with Second Chance for the past couple of years and continue to be impressed with how hard they work to not only help and care for the animals they rescue, but also the resources they give to animal owners in the communities they serve. From veterinary services, vaccine clinics, pet grooming, food banks, and more. They truly are an impressive organization.”

“Second Chance is a great example of a nonprofit making a real difference in their community,” said Perla Ni, CEO of GreatNonprofits,

“Their award is well-deserved recognition not only of their work, but the tremendous support they receive, as shown by the many outstanding reviews they have received from people who have direct experience working with Second Chance.”

GreatNonprofits is the largest donation website for nonprofits and where people share stories about their personal experiences on more than 1.6 million charities and nonprofits. The GreatNonprofits Top-Rated Awards are the only awards for nonprofits determined by those who have direct experience with the charities – as donors, volunteers, and recipients of aid.

The complete list of 2023 Top Rated Nonprofits can be found at: https://greatnonprofits.org/awards/browse/Campaign:Year2023/Issue:All/Page:1

Tickets for Christmas by Candlelight at Old Sturbridge Village

on Sale to the Public at the Best Discounts Available

Buy your tickets early and save on this popular holiday tradition!

Sturbridge, MA Christmas by Candlelight at Old Sturbridge Village tickets go on sale to the general public beginning at 10:00 a.m. Friday, Oct. 27. This popular holiday event returns with select dates in November and December, inviting visitors to step into the past and celebrate New England holiday traditions of the 19th-century and today.

Christmas by Candlelight is a great family activity to share while guests are in town, as a way to get in the spirit after a day of shopping, or as a fun way to spend the day with the kids while they are on school vacation.

The staff of the Village plans year-round for this visitor's favorite event. This year over 80 cut trees will be delivered for the Christmas Tree Trail, over 4,000 candles in tin lanterns will light the Village, and over 2,000 yards of garland will adorn the Village buildings in their holiday finest.

Jean Contino, Coordinator of Domestic Crafts, says, “We started planning for 2023 the day after we closed in 2022!” With the help of over 200 volunteers and the United Way of South Central Massachusetts, her team has assembled over 1,500 craft kits for the event.

This year’s event will see the return of many favorite holiday activities, and always with a new spin.

Enchantment abounds  – Old Sturbridge Village’s 200-acre campus will be decorated for the holiday season. Guests can wander the Christmas Tree Trail and Christmas Wish Bridge, a nature path lit up with Christmas trees along the Quinebaug River. Or watch the evening come to life at a lighting ceremony every night at 4:30 p.m., ride in the horse-drawn carryall around the Village Common, visit the 500+ piece nativity set in Friends Meetinghouse, and view Christmas décor from the 1830s, 1850s, and 1870s in the Salem Towne House. Thanks to special contributions from Oakwood Farms Christmas Barn in Spencer, MA, the Asa Knight Store will feature the history of glass ornaments. The cabinetmaker will be crafting wooden toys and gifts and the tinners will be punching tin lanterns. Take in the sights and smells of holiday baking at the Freeman Farmhouse and visit with the farm animals, and so much more!

Step back in time – The households throughout the Village will feature various traditional craft demonstrations including making woolen ornaments, authentic marzipan, knitting Christmas stockings, baking cakes, punching tin lanterns, making pottery, and more. Sample mulled cider and Polish gingerbread and see other holiday treats being made.

“If you haven't been you have to go at least once! It's delightful!” —Social media comment

Get hands-on with crafts – Visitors can make crafts at various stations throughout the Village, purchase craft kits in our shops for gift giving, and try candle dipping for an additional fee.

Hear stories of the season – Visitors can sit and listen to readings of The Nativity Gospel of Saint Luke and The Nativity Gospel of Saint Matthew in the Friends Meetinghouse or hear classic Christmas tales being told including Spanish readings of Un Cocqui de Boriquen a Puerto Rican children’s story.

If you missed your chance last year to learn about the oldest dance on the island of Puerto Rico, join us at this year’s Christmas by Candlelight event. “I loved seeing kids and their families joining in the fun of the story I read about the Puerto Rican coqui and Los tres Reyes Magos and dancing with me,” says Jasmin Rivas, Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Access. “It’s a special feeling to be able to share about my culture with others.”

Enjoy live music and magic – See historical musical performances around the Village including our costumed historians playing various instruments, The OSV Singers (on Sundays), and different local performers each night. There is also a not-to-be-missed magic show with Bob Olsen!

We went a couple of weeks ago and it was snowing. It was magical and so beautiful.” – Guest comment from 2022

Find festive foods – You’ll find a variety of hot foods and beverages at various locations throughout the museum, including treats you’ll see being made in the Village. Visit the Bullard Tavern Café and Patio for hearty soups, hot sandwiches, festive desserts, hot and cold beverages, and specialty cocktails. Or enjoy a treat from one of our concession stands in the Countryside or on the Common. There’s also the Ox & Yoke Café with soups, sandwiches, pastries, and beverages on your way into or out of the Village.

Gingerbread House Contest– An annual favorite, enter our Gingerbread house baking contest and put your creation on display. Families, professionals, as well as home bakers are all welcome and guests can vote for their favorites! Enter your creation by November 12, 2023. Details online.

Annual Toy Drive Returns to North Brookfield Savings Bank

North Brookfield, MA For North Brookfield Savings Bank the holiday season is a special time of year. It is when people and communities come together, and what better way to do so than by helping make sure that all children in our communities experience a wonderful, joy-filled, holiday season.

North Brookfield Savings Bank’s Annual Toy Drive aims to ensure holiday wishes come true for our younger community members. Starting November 1st and running through November 30th  monetary donations and new toys will be collected at Bank branch locations.

During the Toy Drive, community members are welcome to visit any branch location to make their donations of new unwrapped toys for children. All toys collected will be donated to local toy programs in each community, to ensure that local children in need will receive holiday presents. This year, the Bank’s Ware branch location will be primarily accepting monetary donations to help their local toy program partner the Ware Police Department, who has reformatted their program to be more tailored to each family in need. Our Belchertown location will only accept donations of toys, not funds, as their local toy program partner the Belchertown Police Department, has also reformatted their program.

In addition to toys, NBSB will accept financial contributions at each branch. The Bank will match every dollar donated, as well as contribute $1 for every toy collected, up to $250 per branch location.

“As a local Bank that places a high importance on embracing and committing to the values of kindness and community support, North Brookfield Savings Bank is proud to continue the tradition of hosting our Annual Toy Drive at our locations,” said Nicole Syriac, Digital Marketing Strategist at North Brookfield Savings Bank. “We want to ensure that every child can have a wonderful holiday season, this year and every year. We know this goal is possible with the continued support and kindness of our local community. We invite all of you to visit us, as you have so generously done in the past, to make your contribution.”

Donations are being accepted at these North Brookfield Savings Bank branches:

  • North Brookfield Branch, 9 Gilbert Street – partnering with the North Brookfield Police Association’s Toys for Joys Program

  • East Brookfield Branch, 100 West Main Street, Route 9 – partnering with the East Brookfield Toys for Joy Program

Served through Italy, Porchetta is a popular dish in the city of Florence and can be found as “street food” in the form sandwich and also as a main entree served often for special occasions and holidays. Porchetta or Carne Di Maiale Porchetta is a derivative of the word porco, “pork,” and is slowly roasted for hours to create a delicious, moist, and flavorful meal.

Join Chef Rico, for this sure to sell out event, and be there to enjoy this old-world delicacy. Chef Rico will be pairing his porchetta recipe with an amazing assortment of side dishes native to the Florence area.

With the holidays approaching, this is a fantastic dish to add to your holiday cuisine repertoire.
