March 2024 Newsletter

From the Founder - March 2024

“And who is Dorcas?” Besides “Why Kenya,” the second most common question about Dorcas Destiny International is “Who is Dorcas?”  Well, if you know the bible and the book of Acts chapter 9, you were given a brief introduction of Dorcas, also known as Tabitha. The Weymouth New Testament translation states: “Among the disciples at Jaffa was a woman called Tabitha, or, as the name may be translated, 'Dorcas.' Her life was wholly devoted to the good and charitable actions which she was constantly doing.”–Acts 9: 36

Another note from the Andrew Wommack Living Commentary reads: Dorcas used her talents to minister to others, and this endeared her to the other believers.

So, the name Dorcas is intended to demonstrate that our purpose and mission is to do good to others, particularly those who are demonstrated to have less than others.

Our mission is demonstrated by our visits to Kenya and the time we use to be among those to whom we provide support and assistance, developing relationships and providing tangible support. In this seventh year (woo-hoo!!), we are seeing children grow up, lives being changed, and more good being done than ever before. Our relationships are becoming more like partnerships with others coming alongside to enhance what we can deliver to our precious family members in Kenya.

This is more evident than ever with our bringing on a 3rd school (St. Marys Academy) for which we are providing school lunches; and a new program I have titled “The Hope Rescue Project” that emerged as an opportunity to provide lasting transformation to multiple lives.

Maybe you will hear the whole story one day. It’s pretty amazing.

Anyway, thank you if you are a donor, contributor, supporter, or partner. We can’t do what we do without you. Your prayers and financial generosity make it all happen! Blessings on you for being with us in the work of the ministry!

Love, hugs, and more! Until next time…

Recap from the February 2024 Mission Trip.

Continuing on from our report in the February newsletter about the mission trip, we will give you a brief recap of what we already touched on.

On day one, the founder, USA and Kenya teams visited the children at Victory School.

On the second day of our trip, we visited Amani Celebration Church in Kitengela, Nairobi where we held a two-day pastors and leaders conference with Pastor Dr. Steve Cassell of Steve Cassell Ministries, Pastor Craig Harvey, and guest minister Dr. Lolita Cleveland as teachers.

Day four was a travel day to Siaya County, for another conference at Nyakongo KTMC Calvary Center. Along the way to Siaya, Dr. Steve met the students from the Covenant Theological Seminary in Kisumu over dinner.

In Siaya, the founder Donna, Pastor Craig, Dr. Cleveland, and Educational Enrichment Coordinator Sharon met with Noah Alwanda, who will create the social work component for DDI. We gave clothes and supplies to the women in Siaya.

At MBL Kings Academy, we had an incredible games day where we involved the children in a variety of sports, including football/soccer, rugby, and disc golf. We distributed more than 8 balls meant for each game to the kids to be able to play.

We embarked on a pastoral conference meeting in Rongo where Dr. Lolita Cleveland ministered to the women, a powerful sermon about how to stay confident, and Pastor Dr. Steve Cassell and Pastor Craig Harvey ministered and answered various questions raised by the congregation using the bible as the point of reference.

On the last day in Migori, we had another powerful pastoral conference at KTMC church Opoya where pastors and believers came in large numbers to the conference.

At the conclusion of the pastoral conference meetings, the team returned to Nairobi, where the Founder and other DDI professionals visited St. Marys Kings Academy, located in the Tassia Embakasi Mabatini slum. DDI is now providing school lunches to over 35 needy children at St. Mary's King's Academy, a recently established school near the Nairobi River.

The success story of Talia

Talia is a young, beautiful girl in kindergarten at Victory School. When I first encountered Talia, we were still new in the school, and every morning; she found it challenging to part with her parent. Tears would stream down her cheeks as she clung to her mother's hand, reluctant to go to class.

Despite her initial struggles, Talia’s teacher and classmates embraced her with warmth and encouragement. They created a nurturing environment where she felt safe and valued. Slowly but steadily, she began to blossom.

With each passing day, Talia gained confidence and independence. She discovered the joy of learning through playful activities and interactive lessons. Her tears transformed into giggles of excitement as she eagerly participated in class. She became a very good friend of mine and she enjoys coloring a lot. Every time she sees us, she can’t wait to do the activities we have in store for them.

These days she says goodbye to her mother with a happy smile on her face and runs to class to join the other children.

The success story of Rihanna, Grade 2

I remember clearly the first time I was told to teach Grade Two, skeptical, and nearly anxious about making a good impression. I tried to remember the students’ names, slipping, confused, and sometimes regaining my stand. Before I even asked her, she directly looked at me and said without a stutter, “Mine you won’t forget”, I did not. She is truly a force to be reckoned with, at her age, a star both in class and on the field. But sometimes, some stars don’t shine as bright as they are supposed to without guidance and encouragement from people who are meant to do so.

So, at Victory School, with the help of DDI, we try our best to create an environment that will help students like her excel in their passion and know the love of God along the way.

So, to my teachers out there with any Rihanna in their class, patiently polish her, she is meant to shine brightly.

The success story of Alice, Grade 2

Alice is a grade two pupil who struggled when it came to reading. In class, she was diffident when it came to answering questions. Alice used to follow what others were writing when given assignments. Despite the difficulty in reading and feeling lost in the crowd, Alice decided to take control of the journey.

With hard work and determination Alice sought help from teachers. By celebrating each achievement, Alice gradually built up her confidence and reading skills. She gradually started to answer more and more questions in class. Whether the answers are right or wrong she makes sure she participates in class even though she is less talkative.

The success story of Shalom, Grade 1

Over a year, I closely monitored Shalom's development from PP2 to Grade 1. Initially reserved, he revealed a mischievous streak when he sensed the teacher's attention elsewhere. Sharing a bustling classroom with Playgroup and PP1 provided ample opportunities for Shalom to engage in playful antics, from mock fights to exchanging jokes, capitalizing on the teacher's divided focus.

Despite these distractions, he displayed exceptional academic prowess, often completing tasks ahead of his peers. However, upon transitioning to Grade 1, marked by a smaller, more focused environment, Shalom's behavior underwent a rapid change. The increased mental stimulation from new content and heightened teacher attention dissuaded him from reverting to old habits. With fewer distractions and greater individualized attention, he became more inclined to focus on personal growth and academic advancement, showcasing his adaptability and potential for further development.
