Alumni Spotlight

Mary Pender Greene '70, LCSW-R, CGP

In 1996, Mary Pender Greene ‘70 was inducted into Kingsborough Community College’s (KCC) Alumni Wall of Fame, and for good reason. She has enjoyed a long and distinguished career as a thoughtful leader in the social service industry, a trailblazer whose expertise encompasses social work, psychotherapy, coaching, executive management and much more.

She is currently serving as President & CEO of MPG Consulting, a company that is committed to eliminating bias and structural racism in the workspace. Mary is also the former Assistant Executive Director at the Jewish Board of Family and Children’s Services – America’s largest non-sectarian and not-for-profit mental health and social services agency. Among other publications, she is the author of Creative Mentorship and Career-Building Strategies: How to Build your Virtual Personal Board of Directors.

Yet for all of her prestigious accomplishments, Mary still cherishes her formative years as a Kingsborough Community College student, when she was provided the building blocks for the success she enjoys today.

“Before attending KCC,” Mary recalls, “no one had ever taught me the basics of being a student—be it study skills, writing papers, or even filling out applications.” At KCC, Mary was grateful for the smaller, more intimate learning environment of a community college. She even speculates that, had she opted instead for a larger 4-year college, she may have gotten lost in the academic shuffle altogether: “When I first entered KCC, I did so as the first member of my family to ever attend college. Without KCC, I would have never acquired such a strong foundation.”

As a KCC student, Mary was part of the College Discovery Program. There, she benefited particularly from the guidance of Martha Brown, an advisor: “Thanks to her career counseling, I began pursuing social work and never looked back!” Mary also found a mentor and role model in Dean Thelma Malle, a trailblazer in her own right in the history of KCC leadership: “She was the first and only Black dean I ever encountered in my academic career and was truly inspirational.”

Reflecting on her journey that began at KCC, Mary has the following advice for today’s students at her alma mater: “You do not have to do any of this alone. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and extra support. KCC will always be there for you, as it was for me.”

KCC Alumni vs. Wave Basketball

Saturday, October 21- Kingsborough alumni, coaches, students, and an audience of supporters gathered for two alumni basketball games held in our gym: a women’s game at 1pm, and men’s game at 3pm. Our current students faced off against alumni players, showing their KCC spirit as both sides fought valiantly until the end. The games resulted in both the men’s and women’s student teams overtaking their predecessors with double-digit wins. With a turnout of roughly 30 alumni between the teams, the competition was fierce, and the crowd of family and friends created a lively atmosphere for the games. Athletic Director Bobby Allison shared that events like this were part of his ongoing goal of creating a greater connection between past and present student athletes. He explained, “We have to look backwards in order to move forward. Our current students should be going forward based on what has been laid down [by former students].” Since his arrival at Kingsborough, he has made it a point to invite previous student players back to the campus to connect them with current students and to build a stronger community of alumni athletes. The Office of Alumni Relations also attended the event, setting up an information/sign-up booth for the Alumni Association to facilitate engagement and create connections that continue past graduation. As the alumni and student athletes mingled on and off the court, their love for not only their sport, but for their community, was on full display.

The Venable Foundation has been a consistent and generous supporter of the Food for Thought Pantry at Kingsborough since 2017.  Their grants have allowed the pantry to stock its shelves with non-perishable stable foods, and provide “Grab & Go” bags that include one snack, one beverage, and a cup of soup. These are distributed by our Access Resource Center (ARC) to our busy students as they move between classes but lack time to sit and eat. Many of KCC’s pantry patrons are parents (38%), 93% of students who visit report an income under $20,000, and many live in areas characterized as “food deserts”, with no access to nutritious, affordable meals. Thanks to the support of The Venable Foundation, we have been able to provide thousands of students, and their families, with healthy meals, thereby nurturing both their bodies and their minds.
