In Tibetan Buddhism, it is traditional to observe the anniversary of a great master's parinirvana (called a "Dechö") each year with practices to accumulate merit, purify obscurations and connect with the master's compassionate wisdom awareness.

We look forward to seeing all our dharma family in person and on Zoom and taking this time to remember and honor our precious guru.

Register Here for Dechö March 19-26, 2024

On this occasion, we will practice the Kunzang Nyima Vajrasattva since this practice has a very special connection to Ven. Gyatrul Rinpoche. Learn more about the lineage here. We will be doing the extensive, retreat-style version, involving haunting melodies and striking Atiyoga imagery.

Lama Drimed Lodro Rinpoche will be our Vajra Master.

Lama Sonam Tsering Rinpoche and Lama Jigme will join us as our special guests.

In 2008, as Tulku Theglo Rinpoche completed his historic visit to the U.S. where the Kunzang Nyima cycle of empowerments was first granted in this land, Ven. Gyatrul Rinpoche requested Tulku Theglo to give instruction on how to perform the extensive version of the Vajrasattva practice to a small group of students present at Palri Pema Od Ling in Austin, Texas.

From this intensive instruction, the retreat practice manual was created along with documentation of the melodies, tormas and ritual activity of the practice, and the practice was maintained there for several years.

Now, according to Gyatrul Rinpoche's heartfelt wish that this practice would be upheld, we will be performing it in an 8-day retreat to honor the 1st Anniversary of Gyatrul Rinpoche's Parinirvana.

A Note on Dates: In observing the Dechö of a master, it is suitable to practice either on the Tibetan date or Western calendar date. For Ven. Gyatrul Rinpoche's Dechö, the Tibetan date is the 17th day of the 2nd month, which in 2024 will be March 26th, while the Western date is April 8th.
