Culture & Language

Celebrate the end of Carnival (Fasching) with a Berliner

Shrove Tuesday, also called Pankcake Tuesday, Pancake Day or Mardi Gras, is the day before Ash Wednesday, and the final day of Carnival (Karneval, Fasching). It marks the end of pre-Lent which begins with Ash Wednesday.

Celebrate Shrove Tuesday by indulging in a Berliner, a fluffy, jam-filled German doughnut, typically dusted with powdered sugar. This delicious pastry also goes by other names, such as "Krapfen" in Bavaria, "Kreppel" in Hessen, or even "Berliner Pfannkuchen" in Berlin itself.

Check out the Berliner recipe.

International Mother Language Day

Approved at the 1999 UNESCO General Conference, February 21 is International Mother Language Day, a worldwide annual observance to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity.

"Multilingual and multicultural societies exist through their languages which transmit and preserve traditional knowledge and cultures in a sustainable way."

Celebrate International Mother Language Day and join a German language class today or learn more about raising children with more than one language.
