Winter Happenings with Southern Nursing Research Society
Our annual SNRS conference is quickly approaching! Abstract acceptances will be sent soon, and I hope everyone who is planning on presenting will be able to attend. Our valiant reviewers conducted over 1,100 reviews from at least 380 abstracts. This year, we have a new option for students to present and we have communicated this to the deans and directors of schools and colleges of nursing in the Southern region. Each school can conduct its own internal review for the students who want to present research at SNRS and can submit the top 4 abstracts. They will be accepted without additional review, and these presentations will be given their own designation of Rising Stars. Even if you did not submit an abstract, please remember that staying connected to your nursing research society is very important for your career as well as to build an active, strong community of nursing scholars across our Southern region.
During our 38th Annual Conference, February 21-24, 2024, in Charlotte, N.C., we will install our newly elected Board of Directors, whom the membership chose to lead the organization from 2024 to 2026. They are President: Charleen McNeill; President-Elect: Mercy Mumba; Vice President: Hyochol Brian An; Secretary/Treasurer: Pamela Ashcraft; Director of Career Development: Kyungeh An; Director of Communications: Ashley Rivera; Director of Development: Demetrius Abshire; Director of Grants: Vicki Loerzel; Director of Research Interest and Implementation Groups (RIIGS): Miriam Ezenwa; Director of Membership: Sara Davis; and Succession Planning and Nominations Committee: Ann Hammack Johnson
and Susan Letvak.
I am very pleased that the Board of Directors who were eligible to serve a second term decided to run again and some new Board members are second timers on the Board. This provides a great deal of continuity for our Board and helps us move forward with our strategic plan for creating a strong and diverse society of nursing researchers who are advancing and implementing improvements in population health. Besides being diverse in age, race/ethnicity, and gender, our Board is diverse in locale, with the states of Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Tennessee, South Carolina, Florida, and Georgia represented! This illustrates the broad scope and inclusivity of the Society’s membership.
We can all be proud of how well we represent our nursing colleagues who provide care, teach, and mentor our new nursing professionals, and conduct and implement the research necessary to reverse the troubling trends in our current healthcare, with increasing rates of maternal and infant morbidity and increasing mortality rates for all Americans. We have much to do to address these problems using our research and implementation education, but I know that nurses have the research knowledge, implementation skills, and access to the populations of need that it will take to correct these abysmal statistics. Be sure to attend the 38th Annual Conference of Southern Nursing Research Society to learn more from our exciting, innovative, and creative nursing colleagues who will share their results of research that is advancing the health of our population.
Lastly, the Southern Nursing Research Society continues to need additional conference sponsors to offset the increased conference expenses due to inflation, and to provide critical research funding to our growing membership. If your school or college has not done so already, please consider becoming a sponsor at any level!

The SNRS Annual Conference is the focal point for those engaged in nursing research in the southern region and provides an opportunity for SNRS members to report ongoing and completed research as well as theoretical, conceptual, and methodological projects to colleagues. SNRS/CANS 2023 Dissertation Research Grant Recipient | |

Congratulations to the 2023 SNRS/CANS Dissertation Research Grant recipient, Mayra Sainz, from Emory University for her dissertation, “Identifying and leveraging multi-level factors to reduce structural barriers affecting Latinx dementia caregivers”. Mayra will receive a grant of up to $5,000 for her research.

SNRS/NLN Doctoral Research Grant
Due February 1, 2024
The Southern Nursing Research Society (SNRS) and the National League for Nursing (NLN) have a strong and mutual interest in promoting nursing education research conducted by doctoral nursing students and have agreed to offer a joint award focused on the following goals:
- Select and award a meritorious nursing research dissertation proposal,
- Increase the quality and quantity of nursing education focused research, and
- Support the advancement of the science of nursing education.
This is an annual award of $5000 to support completion of one nursing student's dissertation work. Funds for this award are provided by the SNRS and NLN. The recipient also receives a one-year student membership from the NLN.

SNRS Dissertation Research Grant

The purpose of the SNRS Dissertation Research Grant Award is to support doctoral students in the Southern region enrolled in research-focused programs as they initiate a program of nursing research to advance nursing science and practice. Funds are available for quantitative and qualitative research on any topic relevant to the nursing profession.
SNRS Dissertation Award for up to $5000. Applications must be submitted by March 1, 2024.

Winter Member Spotlight - Susan Welch, PhD
Dr. Welch is recognized nationally and internationally as an expert in curriculum development and program evaluation, mentoring and faculty development, nursing faculty workforce, and the scholarship of teaching and learning.
With the current emphasis on increasing numbers of Nurse Educators from marginalized groups, the National Academies of Medicine Future of Nursing report calls on nursing schools to address the Nurse Educator shortage from diverse populations to advance health equity and culturally congruent healthcare. Nationally, only 17.3% of full-time Nurse Educators are from Underserved Communities.
Dr. Welch pursued and received the US Department of Labor grant to make a meaningful impact on nursing education and the nursing faculty workforce. The grant will increase the number of Nurse Educators from the current population of BSN-prepared nurses from Underserved Communities through partnerships between Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and academic institutions with large nursing student populations from Underserved Communities.

Good News Highlights
Hudson Santos, RN, PhD, FABMR, FAAN
Landmark NIH grant awarded to University of Miami School of Nursing and Health Studies. The $23.57 million grant will enable a multidisciplinary research team, led by the school’s Vice Dean for Research Affairs, Hudson Santos, to pioneer the first-ever Miami-ECHO cohort of parents and children.

This study and publication are the work of University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) faculty, a BSN honors student, and PhD in Nursing Science students. The study was supported by the UAMS College of Nursing Intramural Grant Program.

Dr. Sharon Kozachik, PhD, RN, FAAN, associate professor and associate dean for academics, who’s recent publication in the Journal of Emergency Nursing article “Recommendations for emergency departments care for persons with opioid use and opioid use disorders: An integrative review”
Dr. Kathy Lindell, PhD, RN, FAAN, associate professor and Mary Swain endowed chair in palliative care health was selected to serve as the nurse expert on an interdisciplinary, national team that recently received a CHEST Foundation Research Grant to investigate “Sex hormones in pulmonary fibrosis.”
Dr. Susan Newman, PhD, RN, associate professor and assistant dean of PhD program in nursing science, Carrie Cormack, DNP, RN, associate professor and Marr distinguished professor in palliative care and Martha Sylvia, PhD, RN, associate professor will be inducted as fellows in the American Academy of Nursing in October 2023.

RIIG - Biobehavioral RIIG Spotlight
The mission of the SNRS Biobehavioral RIIG is to promote the advancement of nursing knowledge related to the interactions between biology and behavior in order to improve the health of individuals, families, and communities through research collaboration and dissemination, peer support to members, and educational opportunities. Our vision is to lead the transformation of health outcomes through nursing research utilizing state-of-the-art methodologies and approaches to examine complex clinical problems. Most recently, the Biobehavioral RIIG held a webinar with Dr. Nicole Carlson, Associate Professor at Emory University School of Nursing, who presented an introduction to metabolomics and a case study of metabolomic pathways and labor dysfunction.
