Cassie Cicalis, Class of 2020, worked at Barings LLC in Boston this summer as a portfolio management intern under UConn alumna Deb Schwartz.  Barings is a global investment firm in public and private markets with strategies in fixed income, equities, multi-asset, and alternatives, which includes real estate.

During her time in Boston, she supported the Barings Core Property Fund, which is a private equity real estate fund that is included in the NFI-ODCE.  For her final project, she presented her analysis of performance measurements such as fund returns, property level returns, LTV ratios, core and non-core exposure, as well as property and geographic diversification.  The project also included mock industrial and multifamily valuations and their contribution to the Fund's performance.

Throughout the summer, Cassie traveled to other Barings offices in New York, Hartford, and Charlotte where she toured properties owned by Barings and others being considered for acquisition.  Pat Nista and other UConn alumni offered their time so she could learn about real estate valuation, asset management, and acquisitions.  Many graciously included Cassie in their daily routines, providing invaluable experience as she shadowed them, learning in real-time.

Cassie notes, "My internship experience at Barings far exceeded my expectations. I appreciated how open and available people were to discuss their roles, real estate trends, and offer industry advice.  I gained valuable exposure that I am sure will help me wherever I land after graduation."
