Building Green

COMMUNITY CORNER

Opportunities, shout-outs and requests.

Dear Tracy,

What do reading books, interpreting credit reports, pulling weeds, organizing bedding, teaching cooking and building a pergola have in common?

They are all things volunteers did for us last year!

April is Volunteer Appreciation month and boy o’ boy do we have some AMAZING volunteers that we treasure.

Our volunteers bring meaningful community to life through the time they spend teaching, decorating apartments, sharing skills and so much more. When we say we couldn’t do our work without them, we really, really mean it.

In 2023, we had 788 volunteers give 4,772 hours of their time and talent to supporting our families. Imagine if 2.25 full-time employees worked (without a vacation!) for an entire year. That’s how much work our volunteers do! And that combined time represents a value of $151.750.

The true value they bring is priceless. Every volunteer brings with them a heart and compassion that infuses every corner of our mission with caring. Every family we serve knows they have a special place in a community that deeply believes in them.

The impact of that care lasts a lifetime. One alumni who was at Saranam as a child shared this with us, after several years of stability following her family's successful exit:

"I want to [thank] the staff and teachers and volunteers and the other families we were with and everyone else involved for their support, kindness, encouragement, warmth, guidance, gifts, lessons, patience, and for their love... Though there were many changes and challenges, my favorite memories are at Saranam."

We know that the impact is mutual. One of our core values is transformation and we believe that our work together changes both our families and our community. A volunteer decorator recently shared:

"I feel Saranam is such a forward-thinking program & after speaking with several woman that expressed how the program changed their lives, I feel honored to have contributed a very small part in helping to give a family hope for a better future. "- Saranam volunteer

If you have every wanted to get involved, now is a great time. Check out our opportunities on our website and see how you can make a difference.

Thank you, thank you to our volunteers for all you do to bring us your light and love!

Welcome to the Team!

Our team is growing! We are happy to welcome two new staff members, Stephanie Pankratz and Dede Walden.

Dede joins our Administrative team as our new Office Manager. From her home base at the ADC Family Campus, she will make sure our administration runs smoothly and that everyone who walks through our doors has the best possible experience. Her interest in Saranam flourished as a volunteer and she is thrilled to put her 20 years of experience to action for our families.

"Coming to work at Saranam is one of the best things to ever happen to me, I cannot wait to lead with my heart and contribute to the success of our families."- Dede Walden

Stephanie is also a super-star volunteer turned team member who is our Family Activity Coordinator for the ADC Family Campus. She is excited to use her 30 years of experience teaching and mentoring kids, teens and adults to plan engaging life skills classes and activities for Saranam families on the Westside.

"I'm so excited to see what comes next; to dig in with the families as they come in, getting to know them, and moving forward together."- Stephanie Pankratz

Join us in giving Dede and Stephanie a warm welcome!

In Loving Memory

Our hearts are heavy with the recent loss of two long-time friends.

Pat Renken served on Saranam’s Board of Directors for many years and dedicated countless hours as a volunteer and advocate supporting our families. Most importantly though, she was one of our families’ biggest cheerleaders. With decades of time spent in the education system, she was a deep believer in everyone’s potential. In her latest cheer she wrote, “Impossible? No way! You are squarely on the road to success!”. Her unwavering belief in them inspired so many in our community to share their love and support. Pat’s kindness will continue to leave a mark on those who will miss her dearly. Read more about her life here.

Ansel Roney not only helped her clients design gorgeous homes, she lent her impeccable taste and huge heart to decorating warm, loving homes for our families for many years. As an interior designer, she knew the impact that a thoughtful, beautiful design can make in translating the hope and care our families need. Her deep-held commitment to supporting women who are investing in their education motivated so many to reach new heights in their dreams. We are so grateful for the care she poured into helping others on their way to a new future. Read more about her life here.

ADC Family Campus Update

The ADC Campus is looking great! Our staff recently had a chance to take a behind-the-scenes tour and got to see beautiful flooring being installed, kitchens taking shape and the landscaping in full bloom. It is easy to see what a peaceful and nurturing neighborhood this is becoming.

We had hoped to open the campus this month, but unforeseen construction delays have impacted this timeline.

We will share more updates as we receive them and we promise to share more pictures of the homes' progress as more and more of the finishing touches are added. And of course we will share tours in our virtual open house when they are ready.

Thank you for your patience and flexibility and your encouragement as we eagerly await this campus together!

Green Building for Families' Futures

By now you know that the ADC Family Campus will allow us to double our capacity, but did you also know that it will be a GREEN build? All of the buildings are designed to take energy conservation to a new level with solar power, efficient appliances and top-to-floor insulation.

The brilliant design, spearheaded by EcoTerra, will preserve vital natural resources and will ensure that our financial resources will be able to be used where they are needed most—our families.

We explored all of the green features of this new build in our latest blog with Mike Cecchini of EcoTerra. Find out all about these special features of the campus on our website.

Thank you to some special community partners!

Team work makes the dream work! We have had some amazing community partners pitch in recently to help us support our families.

Thank you to Faith Lutheran Church for donating hundreds of toiletries and paper goods as a part of their church’s Lenten Project. We had two HUGE carloads of items that will ensure our families have all they need to keep their home running smoothly.

Covenant United Methodist Church worked their magic again with some super fun Easter baskets for our kids. They made sure to handpick items for every child to make each basket special. Thank you for making the holidays so meaningful!

Huge high five to Hope Christian Middle School for an amazing work-a-thon week. It took 62 people over 180 hours, but they were INSTRUMENTAL in preparing our decorator store and gardens. We truly could not have done it without them and we are so thankful for the citizenship and generosity they showed.

Finally, tons of thanks to student volunteers from Albuquerque Academy! They cleaned tables and pulled a jungle of weeds in our Weil Family Center, making sure it was a welcoming place for families to build relationships together.

Group Opportunities

We have some special group opportunities that only come around once in a blue moon. They are so fun that people like to keep doing them year after year!

These special jobs allow us to extend the same community love to our new families on the Westside that our Eastside families have always enjoyed.

We need help providing:

  • Christmas stockings
  • Easter Baskets (starting 2025)
  • Mother’s Day lunch or gift baskets (starting in 2025)

If you have a group of friends, a book club, a church group- whatever- this is a fun way to get together and give back. Sign up in our volunteer newsletter or learn more by emailing Sunny Holmes at sholmes@saranamabq.org
