CCMBM Fall Update

The Core Center for Musculoskeletal Biology & Medicine (CCMBM) defines itself by emphasizing musculoskeletal-specific education and services that are critical to its members but not available elsewhere in the university system.
Spatial bias in cAMP generation determines biological responses to PTH type 1 receptor activation

Check out the new study by CCMBM members, Wenhan Chang, Christian Santa Maria, Zhiqiang Cheng, and Skeletal Biology and Biomechanics Core Managers Chia-Ling Tu and Nicholas Szeto: doi.org/10.1126/scisignal.abc5944. With their coauthors, they elegantly show the importance of precise spatial localization of PTH receptor signaling within distinct subcellular compartments, a discovery that could improve rational drug design to treat osteoporosis. Read more >>

CAREER DEVELOPMENT
December 1 - Application Deadline
UCSF is hosting a matchmaking event for trainees who currently have or will have a bachelor's degree by June, 2022 and who are eligible for an NIH Diversity Supplement to meet UCSF investigators and discuss research opportunities funded through diversity supplements. Trainees who apply will have the opportunity to have short, 10-minute interviews with faculty in related research areas.

Faculty interested in attending will have an opportunity to have short, 10-minute interviews with trainees at the post-baccalaureate stage who are interested in pursuing a career in research and qualify for funding through the NIH Diversity Supplement mechanism. Typically, this provides salary support for the trainee to work in your lab as a Junior Specialist for 1-2 years.
Hosted by Post-baccalaureate Research Opportunity to Promote Equity in Learning
December 2, 10:30am-12:00pm; Virtual Event
hands-on class will cover some of the most prevalent trends in open science including open access publishing, open research data, open protocols, and open code. We will introduce emerging biomedical funder and publisher requirements for open science, describe how you can get credit and citations for your work, and share best practices for integrating open science practices into your research workflow.
Hosted by the UCSF Library
December 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, 11:00am-12:00pm; Virtual Event
It's an open session for any questions you may have about navigating iLab; Join us, whether your role includes reserving core equipment, managing a Lab or reconciling PI Funds.
Hosted by the UCSF Library
December 3, 9:00am-12:00pm; Virtual Event
This workshop will provide a review of the Python programming skills and techniques used in the upcoming Machine Learning and Natural Language processing workshops. Topics will include string manipulation, data types and conversion, pandas dataframes, and data formatting and preparation.

December 10, 10:00am-1:00pm; Virtual Event
This workshop will provide a review of basic machine learning concepts, and will introduce Python and scikit-learn tools for machine learning. Empahsis will be on the programming work involved in preparing data, populating and building a ML model using scikit-learn libraries, and reading results.
Hosted by the UCSF Library
December 14, 2:00-3:00pm; Virtual Event
Go beyond Google search methods to get a handle on database logic. Build complex search strategies; try some PubMed tricks and tips, and set up alerts to stay informed when new articles are published in your field. And try two other databases: Web of Science and Embase.
Hosted by the UCSF Library
December 15, 2:00-5:00pm; Virtual Event
In this workshop, we will provide a brief review of the concepts underlying power and sample size analysis. Following this, we will use R for hands-on programming practice with power and sample size calculations for several different types of analyses, including parametric and nonparametric tests using both analytical and simulation approaches.
Hosted by the UCSF Library
December 17, 9:00-11:00am; Virtual Event
This workshop will review the process of preparing, cleaning, and formatting text for natural language processing projects. Topics will include stop words, n-grams, stemming, lemmatization, and other techniques for pre-processing text. Although we will populate and evaluate a machine learning text classification model, empahsis will be on the programming work involved in preparing text to build and populate the model rather than algorithms or analysis.
