Renters across Canada are facing increasing challenges in their homes. Many are facing excessive rent increases they cannot afford, which are leading to their “economic eviction.” Many have little option but to live in poorly maintained and unsafe homes. Many are facing discriminatory and illegal behaviour from some landlords, with little recourse to protect their rights.
The laws that should protect renters from these housing challenges differ based on where they live. It is unfair that renters in Canada do not enjoy the same basic legal protections to live securely in their homes.
We’re joining the Canadian Centre for Housing Rights (CCHR) in calling on our federal government to take steps to ensure that renters across Canada have basic legal protections so they can live in secure homes.
In under two minutes, you can send a letter to the Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, and the Minister of Housing and Diversity and Inclusion, Ahmed Hussen, through CCHR’s website. Send a Letter

Equitable housing solutions to build for a better future
JANUARY 19, 2023
This week, we’re joined by Angela Schleihauf, the Senior Analyst on the Housing Supply Challenge team in CMHC’s Innovation and Partnerships division. Angela joins us to talk about the recently launched, fourth round of the Housing Supply Challenge: Building for the Future. Tune in to learn more about what the hopes are for the next iteration of this challenge and how you can apply to get involved!
Canada is facing a new wave of homelessness driven by the cost-of-living crisis.
Thousands of families are facing the impossible choice between putting food on the table and paying ever-increasing rent. More and more people are losing their homes, and the prospect of securing affordable housing is becoming even harder to reach, especially for people who are already experiencing homelessness.
That's why the CAEH has proposed a Homelessness Prevention and Housing Benefit in efforts to push the federal government to address the urgency of Canada's deepening housing and homelessness crisis.
This proposal recommends we take action in the fastest and most effective way: By introducing targeted rent support to keep people in their current homes or help those already experiencing homelessness into more permanent housing. While we do this, we have to keep building affordable housing, but building enough will take too long to stem the current wave of homelessness.
But we need your help.
We need your support to show politicians that people across Canada are demanding this benefit be implemented urgently, or they’ll continue to ignore the problem.
Will you send an email to your MP, the Prime Minister, the Minister of Housing and the Minister of Finance to demand they support this new benefit?

Toonies For Tummies
Right now, as many as 1 in 3 Canadian school-aged children may be at risk of trying to learn while hungry. The effects are immediate and lasting, and can affect emotional, physical and mental health.

Help change that by donating online or at participating grocery stores:
* Longo’s - Jan 26 - Feb 8
* Food Basics/Metro - Feb 2 – 15
* Sobeys/FreshCo - Mar 2 - 16
100% of your donations will benefit the growing number of hungry children and youth in our community.

Right now, your donations to last year’s campaign are hard at work as many Food & Friends programs continue to face a surge in need and costs associated with delivering nutritious meals to hungry children and youth.

A healthy meal can cost $2.50 - $4.25 compared to $1.85 a year ago and continues to strain our Food & Friends programs.

Please email foodandfriends@childrensfoundation.org with stories or testimonials about how the Toonies for Tummies grocery cards have affected your Food & Friends program.

The project aims to identify local barriers limiting women from low-income backgrounds, newcomers, disabled, 2SLGBTQ+, First Peoples, and racialized communities, and those experiencing intersectionality of these from stepping into non-profit leadership roles and create solutions.
Registration for Modern Board Essentials course is open!

Serving on a board is both a privilege and a responsibility, but often it isn’t easy to understand where to start and how to become a good board member. Capacity Canada’s Modern Board program equips board directors with the credentials they need to demonstrate their abilities to stakeholders in a concrete way. A great starting place for anyone who has not previously been part of a board, the program is a unique and credible two-course online training module.
Register for Capacity Canada’s Modern Board Essentials of Governing course that begins in March this year!
