Dear Residents -

Last Sunday, I attended the Annual Palisades Community Center Meeting, with members from the Sparkill-Palisades Fire Department, to give residents a brief update on issues of importance to them and to answer questions. I appreciate getting the opportunity to meet and talk with residents in smaller group settings, as evidenced by the fact that this was my fourth time attending the meeting. Many thanks to Carol Baxter and her Board for putting this event together every year.

At the Town Board meeting this week, I had the honor of recognizing Tahlaad J. Mahboeb at our annual Black History Month Ceremony. Mr. Mahboeb is an Orangetown resident, a father and grandfather, the executive director of the Piermont Police Athletic League (PAL), an Orangetown Auxiliary Police Officer, a volunteer with the Tappan Fire Department, a PAL boxing coach with over 50 years in the martial arts, and the host of a podcast.

For those not familiar with Piermont PAL, it is a not-for-profit organization that is dedicated to promoting the health and wellness of children. The mission of the Police Athletic League is to offer young people the opportunity to create positive relationships with police officers and community volunteers through athletic and cultural activities, and it is open to children from all around Rockland County. The Town Board also presented Eagle Scout Michael Hanebuth with a certificate to acknowledge his work on the “Camp Shanks Freedom Trail” project. Michael designed and installed nearly 5 miles of trail markers along the Camp Shanks Freedom Trail. The trail marks the route that soldiers took from Camp Shanks to the Piermont Pier, so that you too can walk in their footsteps. For more information, please click here. Congratulations to Michael on his well-deserved Eagle Scout badge.

Whether you are watching the Super Bowl, heading to the Polar Plunge in Stony Point, getting ready for Valentine’s Day, or just chilling and taking in the “warm” weather this weekend, enjoy!

Regards –

Honoring Black History Month

Recipient: Mr. Tahlaad J. Mahboeb

On Tuesday, February 6, 2024, the Town Board celebrated Black History Month by recognizing Tahlaad J. Mahboeb for his work with the Piermont Police Athletic League and all of his contributions to our community. Up front and center, wearing one of her iconic hats, was none other than former honoree and one of Rockland’s most notable figures, Dr. Frances Pratt. Her attendance was very much appreciated by both Tahlaad and Supervisor Kenny.

Eagle Scout Michael Hanebuth

Troop 55, Blauvelt/Camp Shanks Freedom Trail Project

Congratulations to Eagle Scout Michael Hanebuth (and his family) on his work retracing the steps of our WWII Camp Shanks soldiers. Many thanks to Michael for building the trail markers and creating the detailed map.

Retrace the steps of our WWII Camp Shanks soldiers on their way to fight in Europe!

The Camp Shanks Freedom Trail memorializes the sacrifice of the nearly 1.3 million soldiers that passed through Camp Shanks. The trail marks the route that soldiers took from Camp Shanks to the Piermont Pier so that others can follow in their footsteps. For many, Camp Shanks was "Last Stop USA." Click HERE for the map.
