World Class Schools for Our Students: Preschool Information

NOTE FROM Amy Gage, Oviatt Principal and Shawn Holloway, Superintendent

As a part of our vision of Growing Learners and Leaders, Norwalk Schools participates in the statewide voluntary universal preschool program. This program provides for the allocation of state funds to provide programming for part-time, four-year-old children to attend preschool at Oviatt Elementary or one of our community partner programs.

Currently, Oviatt Elementary has six sections of universal preschool (AM & PM offerings) four days of the week. To expand access to Norwalk families, we work with three partner programs in the community to provide additional spots for enrollment. Our community partners are: Serendipity Preschool; Lil’ Hands, Big Dreams; and Norwalk Christian Academy. The Oviatt Preschool program, as well as our partners, go through an annual certification process with the State of Iowa to ensure we are effectively implementing the Iowa Quality Preschool Program Standards (IQPPS).

Other important attributes of universal preschool in Norwalk:

  • Every teacher is highly qualified and holds a state of Iowa teaching license
  • The program is FREE for eligible four year olds through a state grant
  • Every classroom uses Creative Curriculum and the Iowa GOLD assessment to teach and assess all students
  • Teachers and community partners meet regularly and collaborate with Heartland AEA to analyze data, engage in professional development, and ensure a quality experience for all children

Some additional details regarding preschool from the Iowa Preschool Coalition:

  • A great preschool program can benefit any child. But early learning efforts are especially important to ensure the success of low income students, who often start behind their more affluent peers.
  • Did you know:
  • 90% of the brain develops before age five.
  • Low income children hear up to 30 million fewer words before entering school.
  • A low income child has 975 fewer hours of one-to-one picture book reading than their middle class peers.

Meals for Staff and Teachers

Dear Norwalk Secondary Parents,

As we prepare for the upcoming parent-teacher conferences on Tuesday, November 7th, our primary objective is to ensure that our devoted team of 180 teachers and staff (combined Middle School and High School) can count on nourishing meals and snacks throughout the day. To achieve this, we're reaching out on behalf of Norwalk Connection, the parent-led secondary campus support organization, and kindly requesting your assistance.

We're kindly asking for your support through donations, regardless of the amount, to ensure our educators have access to wholesome meals and snacks. It's not only a practical gesture but also a way to express your support for our hardworking teachers and staff.

Please send your donations via Venmo to @warriorconnection. If you would prefer to give another way, please reach out to Kara Greenlee at

norwalkwarriorconnection@gmail.com.

Watch for other ways to support our secondary students and staff as well!

Your generosity is deeply appreciated and will undoubtedly make a substantial difference for our educators. Thank you for your support.

Warm regards,

Kara Greenlee

Warrior Giving Project

Dear Norwalk Families,

The holidays are fast approaching, a time we look forward to celebrating with family and friends. This year has been challenging and in many ways has helped us to appreciate what we do have. For many of us it is a time to show caring for others through the spirit of giving. For many years, Norwalk students, families, churches and businesses have had the opportunity to help those that may be experiencing difficult times through our annual holiday service project, The Warrior Giving Project. We are pleased to again partner with the Norwalk Community School District in coordinating this project.

The goal of The Warrior Giving Project is to help Norwalk families meet basic needs. It is also our hope that we can help to relieve a bit of the worry and stress that families experience during difficult financial times by helping to provide necessity and gift items for each child.

If your family would like to participate in this optional service project by donating, volunteering or receiving please contact Crystal Ellis, the Norwalk Area Ministerial Association(NAMA) coordinator listed below by Saturday, November 4th. Donations will be collected on Sunday, December 10th to be distributed to families prior to winter break.
