Monthly news & updates
The Wake Forest University Humanities Institute establishes programs and provides funding for university faculty in the humanities and other fields of study engaging in humanistic inquiry and scholarship. We are a member of the Consortium of Humanities Centers and Institutes (CHCI) and the National Humanities Alliance (NHA). The Institute fosters collaboration among faculty, and between faculty and students, to generate new scholarship and creative work, inspire new directions in teaching, and create vibrant university-wide networks in interdisciplinary humanities, digital humanities, narrative medicine, and the engaged humanities. Since its founding in 2010, the Institute has collaborated with university faculty across disciplines in the humanities, arts, social sciences, sciences, and the schools of law, medicine, divinity, and business.

A Note from Jennifer Greiman, Humanities Institute Director

As we close out the academic year, all of us at the Humanities Institute want to thank the faculty whose incredible work makes our programming so rich. We will showcase some of that work at our Annual Spring Symposium, with the conveners and participants of our Interdisciplinary Faculty Seminars and Workshops in conversation on Thursday, May 2nd at 2pm, followed by a keynote by Ignacio Sánchez-Prado at 4pm. The HI is also delighted to announce in this newsletter the recipients of our Summer 2024 grants for writing, course planning, and digital humanities, whose projects represent the full range of humanistic practice as scholarly, creative, and engaged with communities — often all at once. Note, too, that the NEH will be hosting a May 15th webinar on changes to its summer stipend award — and don’t miss Caroline Parrish’s profile of Dr. Barry Trachtenberg. All of us at the HI wish Caroline all the best as she graduates this month. And I wish you all a wonderful summer!

Faculty Spotlights: An Interview with Dr. Barry Trachtenberg by Caroline Parrish, Humanities Institute Student Intern

From Caroline Parrish, WFU '24:

For the second edition of our Faculty Spotlights, I spoke with Dr. Barry Trachtenberg about his perspective on the past, as well as how he believes we can shape the future. As a professor in the WFU History Department who works in Jewish Studies, Dr. Trachtenberg is fervently committed to examining history from all angles. We hope you enjoy his take on the power of the archives.

Also, Caroline Parrish is graduating from WFU this May! Thank you so much for establishing Faculty Spotlights so that it will continue on as an HI newsletter feature after you leave, as well as the many other contributions you have made to the HI.

Words cannot express how much we have enjoyed working with you over the past few years. We wish you all the best as you take the next step in your journey, and please don't be a stranger!

NEH Summer Stipends Program

Webinar: Wednesday, May 15th 2:00-3:00pm (Eastern Time)

On Thursday, May 15th from 2:00-3:00pm, the National Endowment for the Humanities will be offering a webinar for administrators and prospective applicants for the the NEH Summer Stipends program. In this webinar, the NEH will be introducing the program and some changes for the 2024 competition (application deadline September 18th), describing the application and nomination process, and offering application-writing suggestions. There will be a chance to ask questions, captions will be available, and the webinar will be recorded so others can watch it later.

Click here to join the webinar.

The program continues to focus on stimulating new research in the humanities and its publication by supporting the work of individual scholars doing research or writing. The NEH is, however, introducing changes in eligibility requirements expected to bolster support for new applicants. They are now limiting submissions to one per institution who meet the nomination requirements, but they are also increasing the award amount to $8000. The new program guidelines will be posted by June 18, 2024 on the NEH website at: https://www.neh.gov/grants/research/summer-stipends

The deadline for internal nominations/proposals is Wednesday, July 31st. Abstracts should be submitted via email to Aimee Mepham, HI Associate Director (mephamam@wfu.edu).
