Crop Planning Synopsis/Review

Daybreak crop plans with our partnering farms during January and early February to map out the year ahead. Over the past two months, Daybreak CoOwner, Colleen had conversations with over 50 of our suppliers lining up delicious products for you to select from this year. This includes over 150 types of produce and over 200 value added products – all produced by Maine farms and Maine food businesses. Crop planning with farms in advance of the season is a critical part of how we are able to bring you the very best of Maine’s harvest. It allows our farm partners to plan forward and know they have a viable and secure market for their products before they buy seeds and supplies for the growing season.

Daybreak CoOwner Adrienne has been helping with Daybreak’s preparations for the growing season and preparations at her certified organic farm where she grows organic flowers and mixed vegetables. The photo is from New Beat Farm, our Knox farmbox site, cleaning their overwintered flower tunnels. Overwintering these seedlings in tunnels means they will have fresh Maine blooms for you earlier than ever this year!

The Kindness Market at Belfast Soup Kitchen

BSK Kindness Market isle.
BSK Kindness Market cooler.

Belfast Soup Kitchen and The Kindness Market is one of almost 100 hunger relief organizations Statewide that Daybreak donated and delivered Maine grown foods to this past year. Additionally, they were offered as fresh groceries through BSK’s Kindness Market. Most food pantries are run by dedicated volunteers and only open on a limited schedule. Building off Belfast Soup Kitchen's Monday through Friday hours, The Kindness Market offers a five day a week consistent option for members of the greater community to access food. The market is adorable and the team at BSK do an amazing job of making it a versatile and enjoyable grocery shopping experience. We love this food access model created by Cherie and her team at BSK!
