Spring has Sprung

Spring has a way of making us all want to soak in the warming sun, take a deep breath, and say, "Ahhh..."  But while the season of renewal might inspire hope, the challenging realities of our times linger, including major assaults on racial equity and social justice within American society.

Regardless of current events, our firm remains focused and committed to delivering search excellence with an acute and seasoned DEI lens. We believe organizations are more successful with leaders who reflect their communities, markets, and missions. To deliver the best pools of candidates, they must be diverse, and the best candidate should always win.

One area in which we continue to see clients struggling is with boards of directors that create dysfunction and chaos within their organization. For boards to both support their organization and be the strategic asset that an organization’s leader can rely on, proper board governance is critical. Whether you are just considering a board position or already hold one, we think you'll appreciate these tips for peak board — and organizational — performance.

We're also seeing increased requests for market research relating to compensation. Organizations can't simply rely on a 990 to determine what they should pay; they must be competitive on compensation, or they will not attract and retain the best available talent or the benchmark candidates they seek.

This approach extends to the CDFI space, where we are thrilled to support community lenders nationwide who are gearing up to disperse a portion of the $27B Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund (GGRF). To effectively deploy funds, CDFIs need to fill a range of critical, executive-level positions. Learn more from our chat with Duanne Andrade, Executive Director of the Solar and Energy Loan Fund (SELF).

Wherever or whatever you are focused on renewing or growing this season, we hope this spring brings you feelings of optimism, hope and resilience.

Best Regards,

Tracy McMillan, CEO & Managing Partner

The Nonprofit Boardroom: Best Practices for Peak Performance

By Christie Angel, Managing Partner

When joining a nonprofit board, individuals often feel a sense of pride, honor, and appreciation for being asked to serve. The opportunity can be an avenue for improving skillsets, enhancing networks, and most importantly, contributing to the larger community in a meaningful way.

According to BoardSource, “Exceptional boards govern in constructive partnership with the chief executive, recognizing that the effectiveness of the board and chief executive are interdependent. The board is a powerful force supporting the organization, while the CEO sees the board as a strategic asset.”

Beyond Dollars: CDFIs Need Human Capital to Effectively Deploy GGRF

By Melania DaSilva Deaver, Principal

Created by President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act, the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund (GGRF) is a $27B investment mobilizing financing and private capital to slash greenhouse gas emissions, revitalize marginalized communities and foster energy independence.

However, the GGRF alone cannot do it. To effectively deploy those funds, Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) across the country will need to fill a range of critical, executive-level positions.

I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Duanne Andrade, Executive Director of the Solar and Energy Loan Fund (SELF), a Florida-based, non-profit community lending organization that rebuilds and empowers underserved communities by providing access to affordable and innovative financing for sustainable home improvement projects. Their primary focus is on energy efficiency, renewable energy, and climate resilience, including roofs, doors, windows, hurricane shutters, solar panels and more.

Industry Knowledge Matters

Recently, we received a place among Hunt Scanlon's 2024 Select Guide to America's Top 250 Executive Search Firms. We appreciate that this annual publication offers readers expertise from recruiting industry thought leaders. The better that clients and candidates can navigate today’s complex hiring terrain, the better the outcome. In particular, having in-depth knowledge of a sector allows recruiters to guide both parties through the search process efficiently and effectively

"Industry-specific knowledge is an asset to any search, particularly when it comes to mission-driven organizations,” said Tracy McMillan, CEO & managing partner and Christie Angel, managing partner at Broadview Talent. “The unique nuances

of nonprofit work require specialized understanding to help organizations navigate recruiting individuals who will operate within a broader social mission while serving diverse communities with unique needs. In turn, these organizations must understand the rigor, time, effort, and partnership required to make the search a success."
