You’re invited to join us on Saturday, May 4th for Space Day and immerse yourself in our universe and explore all things celestial. 💫

  

Out-of-this-world activities include: 


🚀 Experiment with different methods of rocket launches. 

🛸 Craft your own air-powered rocket to take home.

⭐️ Investigate how air resistance can speed us up -  or slow us down.

👩‍🚀  Do you have what it takes to become an astronaut? 

🚀 Your spaceship is in trouble! With the materials you have on board, design and build a space lander to return to Earth safely.

Activities are available with the purchase of general admission and run from 11:00am to 3:00pm.

Women in Science Speaker Series: Dr. Cathy Olkin | NASA’s Lucy Mission to Explore the Trojan Asteroids | May 8 | 5:00pm - 8:00pm



The stars are aligning! 🌠


On May 8, join us and Dr. Cathy Olkin, Principal Scientist at Muon Space, to explore NASA’s incredible Lucy mission from their former Deputy Principal Investigator. The mission made history as it was the first spacecraft to visit the Trojan asteroids, which share an orbit with Jupiter. 


Dr. Olkin played a pivotal role in ensuring the success of the mission, which is still ongoing. Lucy will help NASA understand important clues about the formation and evolution of our solar system, and will visit 11 asteroids over the span of 12 years!

This event will be out of this world! 🚀



Doors open at 5:00pm for visitors to enjoy exhibits. The lecture will begin at 6:00pm with a Q&A session to follow.

Speaker Series: Dr. John Hartig | Rouge River Revived: How People are Bringing Their River Back to Life | May 30 | 5:00pm - 8:00pm


How can community efforts help our environment? 🌱


On May 30, learn from Dr. John Hartig, co-Editor of “Rouge River Revived” and Visiting Scholar at the University of Windsor’s Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research, on the inspiring revitalization of Michigan’s Rogue River.  


At one point, Rouge River was considered one of the most polluted rivers in the United States, but community efforts are working to bring it back to life. Discover its incredible revitalization and the power of collective community action to help conserve our environment! 🤝


For 14 years, Dr. Hartig served as Refuge Manager for the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge and has received numerous awards for his environmental work, including a 2022 Crain’s Detroit Business Notable Leader in Sustainability.


Come hear from a Michigan leader in sustainability and how communities are making our backyards a better place. 💚

FREE Third Thursday | Science Festival Spectacular | May 16


Join us for Free Third Thursday, Science Festival Spectacular edition! Visitors can receive free admission to Cranbrook Institute of Science from 5:00 – 8:00pm, courtesy of the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan.


This month’s event will be presented by Cranbrook high school interns and explore more than a dozen hands-on experiments that will bring science to life for visitors of all ages.

Learn about the fascinating life and discoveries of Galileo at our soon-to-be-gone traveling exhibition, Galileo: Scientist, Astronomer, Visionary.  This interactive exhibition will engage visitors by revealing secrets of his groundbreaking science through experiments and exhibits.

  • Register for Free First Friday (May 3), courtesy of MASCO to get FREE admission to the Institute! Walk-ups welcome between 10:00am - 5:00pm. Pre-registration is required after 5:00pm. 
  • Register for Free Third Thursday (May 16), courtesy of the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan, and get FREE admission to the Institute between 5:00 - 8:00pm. Walk-ups are welcome, but due to capacity limits, entrance is not guaranteed. 
  • Experience everything the museum has to offer for only $5 every Friday after 5:00pm! General admission, Galileo exhibition, and Acheson Planetarium tickets will be available for just $5 each. Learn more.
