Eastbound and Westbound Cactus City Rest Areas

Construction Activity

  • Both the eastbound and westbound I-10 Cactus City Rest Areas will remain closed through Friday, April 12 while crews remove and rebuild the roadway through the rest area. After the roadway is completed, Metropolitan Water District crews will begin utility and waterline testing work. Please remember to reduce your traveling speed when driving through our project area, follow all temporary traffic signs, and plan your route ahead of travel using Caltrans' QuickMap.

  • Crews will continue to safely conduct roadway prep for repaving operations as well as drainage work along eastbound I-10. When traveling through the I-10, please remember to keep a watchful eye for both construction personnel and equipment.

Project Background

The I-10 Desert Rehab Project segment is a 13-mile stretch of the I-10 freeway near Coachella in Riverside County, between 1.8 miles east of the Dillon Road Interchange and 2 miles east of the Cactus City Rest Area. Construction will take place over the next 3.5 years and includes repaving I-10, updating lane striping, and the addition of an eastbound truck climbing lane. The Cactus City Rest Area will also be closed for 1-2 months during construction.

In addition to repairing and restoring existing roadway pavement and adding an eastbound truck climbing lane, the I-10 Desert Rehab Project will install electric vehicle charging stations at the Cactus City Rest Area, replace and upgrade bridge railings, guardrail systems, and roadway signage, and improve roadway infrastructure including drainage and stormwater treatment systems.
