Upcoming Service

Present to Possibility:

Welcoming in the New Year!

Rev. Jaimie Dingus

10:45 a.m., Sunday, December 29th, 2024

This Sunday, as is our New Year's tradition, we gather to celebrate Fire Communion. We will reflect on the old year gone and the possibilities that lay ahead so we can enter in to 2025 with joy and hope! This will also be Rev. Jaimie's last Sunday before she begins her four month sabbatical.

This Sunday Events

Coffee Hour

Begins directly after Service.

The Hospitality Team would like to announce that there will be no Potluck Lunch on Sunday, January 5th. Our committee is currently short-staffed, and we would love to have you join us in making our regular events like Coffee Hour and First Sunday Potluck happen. If you are interested in bringing smiles and laughter to the Fellowship Hall, please contact June Norton, Darlene Patten, or Kathryn Heath for further information. On-the-job training is provided.

Music News

Sing with the UUCH Choir in 2025! We rehearse most Sundays after church and we would love to welcome YOU to the group! No experience is necessary, just come and sing!

Our next choir rehearsal will be on Sunday, January 5 at 12:10, after coffee hour.

Nursery Care

Nursery care will be available during the service
from 10:30-12:15.

Little ones can be signed in and out upon arrival and departure in the RE wing.

Letter from Rev. Jaimie

Dear UUCH,

The time is almost here! As we wrap up the holiday season here at UUCH, I am preparing to begin my sabbatical. Sunday December 29th is my last Sunday, and then I will be away from the congregation on sabbatical from January 1st to May 1st, 2025!

As a reminder, Sabbatical is a period of rest and renewal taken after several years of service to help UU ministers replenish themselves and grow in new ways. Unlike an academic sabbatical, I am not writing a book or working on a larger project, but I do have goals and plans for this time away. I plan to use my sabbatical time for rest, reflection, and discernment. Here’s an overview of what I will be doing for the next 4 months:

  • Read novels and books about ministry. UUA President, Sofia Betancourt’s anthology of essays about UU theology, Love at the Center, is at the top of my To-Be-Read pile.
  • Spend time hiking and walking in nature.
  • Grow my language skills with more American Sign Language classes and practice.
  • Deepen my cultural understanding of Alabama by visiting a variety of civil rights museums and exhibits across the state. I will be basing my travels on the Alabama Living Legacy Pilgrimage itinerary.
  • Spend time with friends and family, including celebrating my Wedding on 2-1-25!
  • Reflect on the first four years of ministry and reconnect to my ministerial call.
  • Attend worship online at other UU Congregations to get fresh ideas about how to do great worship!
  • Deepen relationships with colleagues and preach the ordination service of my newest colleague, the soon-to-be Rev. Rosemary Dodd.

While I am away, the congregation will be in great hands. Your fabulous UUCH Board and staff will continue to lead and support the church. We have contracted with Rev. Ruth Vann Lillian (uurevruth@gmail.com) who will lead worship, offer pastoral care, support committees, supervise staff, and so much more. Rev. Ruth’s first Sunday with the congregation will be January 5th! And a Sabbatical Committee, chaired by Cam Scales and including Pam Korb, Nancy Pettus and Foster Perry, are also working hard to ensure the sabbatical goes well for all of us.

I will miss you all, and I look forward to hearing all about the growth, learning, and joy that happened at UUCH while I was away.

Take care of yourselves, and take care of each other.

Love & Blessings

Rev. Jaimie Dingus

P.S. When I get back and have a new last name, I will be exclusively using the minister@uuch.org email account for church related email. Please remove jaimie.dingus@gmail.com from your contacts!

Remember the Little Free Pantry!

Many of our neighbors and many unhoused people visit our LFP frequently, and over the holidays and the colder part of the year, their needs increase. Consider buying a few extra cans of soup or veggies to contribute—your Board made a 5-can donation pledge from each of us as one of our Service Projects for the year! For suggestions of what to donate (and what not to donate), check out this list: Pantry Food Items. Remember that many families don’t have the experience or the equipment to handle dried beans, and that the unhoused particularly benefit from cans that don’t require can openers. A little help from us can go a long way!

UUSC's Guest At Your Table

UUCH is participating in the annual Guest At Your Table (GAYT) program sponsored by the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC). The GAYT program has introduced generations of Unitarian Universalists to grassroots partners working for justice around the world with our support. This church year, we are celebrating Guest at Your Table’s 50th anniversary with the theme “Expanding the Welcome Table.”

Every family is encouraged to participate by placing a GAYT box at your dining table and then contributing to this guest at every meal. Please see the table in the Fellowship Hall to pick up your box (the “guest”) and some information about this year’s guests. Boxes can be returned to the church in January or contributions can be sent to UUSC directly.

If you have any questions, please email social.justice@uuch.org

Church Office Hours

The Church Office will be closed the weeks of December 22nd and December 29th. Office Admin Ryan will be checking the UUCH@UUCH.org throughout the holidays. The office can be opened by appointment. Happy Holidays!

A Holiday Gift for the Congregation

The Property Committee is thrilled to announce that Ward Welty is giving our church a generous donation to make the patio space outside of the fellowship hall more beautiful, more comfortable, and more welcoming, as well as being more efficiently maintained. The improved patio garden project is being done in loving memory of Ward's late wife, Jane, who was a member of this congregation for 39 years. She served our church in many ways, including being a youth religious education teacher and serving on membership, hospitality, and social justice committees.

On January 13 at 7:00 PM, we will have a zoom meeting of any church members who are interested in giving input on what they would like to see included in the beautiful new patio garden. The Property Committee will take members' inputs and incorporate as many of them as possible in the final design, which will then go to the Board for approval. We hope to start construction this spring.

Your Board Needs Your Help!

Do you have expertise in insurance? UUCH's current insurance provider is dramatically increasing rates when not just canceling church policies altogether. Insuring churches and church activities is pretty complex--your Board would very much appreciate your help if you have special insurance expertise. Thank you so much! Contact Laurel Bollinger (secretary@uuch.org) if you can assist.

UU Grief Support Group

The Grief Support Group will meet on the first Monday of each month in 2025. The meeting will be in the RE wing from 6-7 pm. Anyone who wants to attend but does not drive after dark, contact Melodie Brier at 256-468-5465. The care committee will arrange a ride for you. The group is open to anyone so feel free to invite people from outside our congregation. The group will support multiple kinds of losses and be a safe space to talk about beliefs that are not traditional Christian heaven and hell afterlife beliefs.

Habitat for Humanity Home Build

UUCH members and volunteers from other churches are making good progress at the Fazzingo/Turner house at 216 Lake Drive in Huntsville! Sheetrock work has completed and interior painting is getting started this week.

Your help is needed! Volunteers will be working at the site most Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays depending on weather and subcontractor activity.

All volunteers must take a volunteer orientation class that is given virtually every week. The dates of the training vary, so please contact Brad at social.justice@uuch.org for the latest schedule.

If you have any questions or are interested in helping out, please email social.justice@uuch.org

Little Food Pantry

Signups for the LFP have slowed to a trickle unless you are filling it without signing up in the signup genius. It’s hard to know. Our LFP is a much needed service to the neighborhood. Fill it with nutritious foods. Folks rarely take garbanzo beans or lentils (even though they are nutritious). Let’s try to keep the pantry going! Please, if you are able to fill it up, please note your name in the Genius. Also, you can bring non- perishables to church, as there are baskets. A big thank you to all who do contribute!
