Note from Nurse Kellie

Hello,

We have seen the mention of Measles Virus in the news lately regarding the new cases reported in Chicago. We receive Health Siren Reports from our local Lake County Health Department when it's helpful to be alert about a local health event. March 12,2024 we received a memo from Lake County Health Department

Lake County School Health Update:

Measles Update

"In March 2024, the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) identified several cases of measles in Chicago. Vaccination rates have declined in school-aged children. Illinois is below the 95% immunization level for measles needed for herd immunity."

As of March 12, 2024, there are currently no reported cases of Measles in Lake County.

As a reminder to our immunocompromised families and students who are unvaccinated:

Be alert for possible measle cases.

Early symptoms of the measles infection like fever, cough, pink eye, runny nose usually last for two to four days before a rash appears but it may take as long as eight days for the rash to appear once symptoms start. The measles rash is typically red, spotty, and bumpy and starts on the head or hairline and spreads down the body. School health and ECE staff should be alert to this especially if there has been contact with a measles case or travel to countries where there are measles outbreaks.

Transmission: The measles virus is extremely contagious and spreads easily through contact with the air breathed out by an infected person. The virus can linger in the air for up to two hours after a person with measles leaves an area. Nine out of 10 unimmunized people who have contact with someone with measles will develop the infection. Patients are contagious starting four days before through four days after the rash appears. Anyone with measles should isolate at home and avoid all contact with others who may not be immune to measles during that time except to seek necessary medical care. If medical care is required, patients should call before they travel to notify the facility of their diagnosis in advance.

Please contact your health care provider with any questions or concerns regarding the health of your student.

Sincerely,

Lora Kellie RN

THANK YOU!

Thank you to our incredible school community for making a lifesaving difference this year by participating in the American Heart Association’s Kids Heart Challenge! Our school helped create a team of lifesavers by learning hands-only CPR and how to spot the signs of a stroke, we collected funds to support the AHA’s lifesaving mission, and we couldn’t be prouder!

Together, we have helped so many people with special hearts and we have made our homes, school and community safer. Learn more about how your donations and heart healthy actions help families and kids.

Didn’t get a chance to participate this week? No worries! You can still register, complete Finn’s Mission and collect lifesaving donations for the American Heart Association by clicking HERE

Special Seniors Day 2024!
Mark your calendars for Friday, April 26th!
For one day each spring, the population at Rondout doubles. That day, we open the doors and welcome special guests for Special Seniors Day, an event that recognizes and celebrates the special relationships and interactions between generations, and the desire for multigenerational interaction as part of our children’s education. The goal of the program is to give students a chance to bond with their special guest at school.
The event is a collaboration between the PTSA, teachers, school administration, and the community. Proud grandparents, aunts, uncles, godparents and family friends have flown in from as far away as Los Angeles to attend. Parents play a critical role in Special Senior’s Day (see below).  Because of this, parents are encouraged to find someone other than themselves to participate, but if they want to be special guests, that’s OK.
RSVP Early
We want to personalize this event as much as possible!  To do that, we need to capture the names of each Special Guest visiting Rondout.  There are 2 ways you can RSVP:
Electronically - Event information was emailed to Rondout families on Sunday, March 11th. In case the invite went to your spam, the RSVP is below.
Paper RSVP, via Backpack Mail - Fill out the RSVP form attached to the Falcon Flyer and send it to school in your child’s backpack.

Parents/Volunteers Needed
This is a shout out to all Rondout parents, nannies and friends who could spare an hour of their day on Friday, April 28th.  We need help in all areas/aspects of this event. There is something for everyone to contribute on Special Seniors Day.   Volunteer now by clicking below.
