Open Stage Night in Saluda
Our family has recently discovered one of Saluda’s treasured events. Saluda’s Open Stage night happens once a month-ish on the 2nd Sunday of the month from 6-8pm at the Saluda Senior Center.
Local young people take turns being host and emcee for the fun family friendly event with some help and oversight from Dori Ray. The night is a wonderful opportunity to share what you’ve been writing, singing, playing, or enjoying over the last month.
At the recent ones I’ve been to, I’ve heard bluegrass groups, Lynard Skynyrd tributes, Les Mis songs, piano solos, and interactive jams composed on the spot. I’ve heard good jokes, bad Dad jokes, poetry recitation, and original poetry. People talk about neat things they’ve learned from just living their lives. I’ve seen singalongs that make you cry and performances that make you get up and dance. Almost anything goes at Open Stage Night.
You won’t find a more encouraging and supportive crowd than this one. They happily cheer and encourage when people get nervous or mess up and sing along with the ones they know. Steve Pricklemyer graciously offers his sound equipment and expertise to make sure that everyone can be heard. On a recent night he got up to play and pulled in four musicians from the crowd to play the electric guitar, mandolin, fiddle, and cajon. He showed them a few chords and soon had them all playing along on songs they had never heard before, and they sounded great. Knowing how to showcase the talents of others is a talent all of its own.
No Open Stage Night would be a success without a great audience, so even if you don’t have something to share at this time, just come and enjoy. Bring the gift of your support, encouragement, and time. You’ll be glad you came.
We’re taking a break for the month of May due to Mother’s Day,
but please join us for the next event on June 9th at the Saluda Senior Center!

May is our transition month where we can be sure that Spring has arrived and can put our coats up! May is also home to the ever-popular Cinco de Mayo, National Burger Month and Older Americans Month. May is also when we celebrate “Spring Greens” so come help us usher in this wonderful time of the year!
“Spring Greens”
May 16-18, 2024
Ransom Road Studios
519 Ransom Road
& Saluda Surrounding Area
Saluda, NC
In Spring, these mountains rival Ireland in the number and amount of “greens”. The different hues blanket the scene with fresh avocado, emerald, lime, and jade shades that are close to unbelievable! The Spring foliage is a real awakening for the senses and the greens just beg to be captured on canvas. Daily, we will begin in the studio with demos and discussion, then continue the day painting “plein-air” at great sites where we will work to interpret these Spring colors in and around Saluda. We will be practicing “social distancing” which suits plein air painters perfectly!
On Wednesday, May 15th, we will have our “get acquainted (or reacquainted) get together” at our home and studio.
“Late Summer on the Blue Ridge”
8/15-8/17,2024
Whiteside Art Gallery
1057 Hwy 64 West
Cashiers, NC
Western NC Blue Ridge Mountains
During “Late Summer on the Blue Ridge” we will be cool and comfortable painting in our studio for three days. We have been invited to enjoy this workshop at the amazing Whiteside Art Gallery in fabulous Cashiers, NC. We will work from photo references that are used as a point of departure for your compositions. We will determine what to leave out or leave in to make good paintings and to make them your own. We will begin each day at 9AM with talks and demonstrations then paint till lunch. We will go “Dutch” to one of Cashier’s charming cafes then return to paint till about 3:30PM. This will leave you time to explore this spectacular area! On Wednesday evening, the 14th, we will have a “get acquainted party” for painters and their partner or friend.
“Fall on the Blue Ridge”
10/24-10/26, 2024
Ransom Road Studios
519 Ransom Road &
Plein Air in and around Saluda
Saluda, NC
This is one of the most spectacular times of the year to be in the mountains of western North Carolina! We will learn how to work quickly and modify a broad vista into an exciting composition. Even devout studio painters will benefit from this change of pace! We will meet each morning in the studio then drive to our sites. We will paint until lunch which will be at one of Saluda’s fun cafes and then return to paint for the afternoon. Also, we will have our “get acquainted party” on Wednesday the 23rd at our home and studio.” This is our most popular time in the mountains so please register for the workshop and secure accommodation early!
General Information
All workshops are open to beginners to advanced with one-to-one instruction in your choice of oil, acrylic, or watercolor. A materials list is sent upon registration. The number of participants in each workshop is limited so we encourage you to call or “e-request” an enrollment form and return it with a deposit.

Top of the Grade Concert Series Returns
The Top of the Grade Concert series returns this summer on the Ella Grace Mintz Stage at McCreery Park on the second Friday evening of the month -- that’s June 14, July 12 and August 9. So mark your calendars for evenings of great music in the newly renovated amphitheater at McCreery Park. The shows start at 7 pm and wrap up as the sun sets over the railroad tracks at 9 pm. These free community events are made possible through a grant from the Polk County Community Foundation.
The series starts with David Childers and the Serpents on June 14. Born and raised in Mt. Holly, N.C., David Childers has written hundreds of songs, and recorded nearly 20 albums on various record labels. David and his band, The Serpents, have played extensively in North Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee for more than 20 years. They have played numerous festivals such as MerleFest, Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion, AmericanaFest, Albino Skunk Fest, McMenamins Great Northwest Music Tour, Mountain Stage, and more. Childers has a folk rock and country music sound with lyrics rooted deeply his Southern heritage.
On July 12, Bob Sinclair and the Big Deals take the stage. The band describes itself as “front porch swing music played by happy people. The Big Deals are kind of like country or jazz or swing but not really. It's what happens when friendship, southern storytelling, musical talent and string quartet sensibilities combine.” The band’s music matches the vibe one feels in historic downtown Saluda.
The series concludes August 9 with Queen Bee and the Honey Lovers, an Asheville dance band that performs swing, classic jazz and Latin music. Vocal-driven with an infectious groove, the Honey Lovers are guaranteed to put a grin on your face and a tap in your toes.
The Top of the Grade Concert series is overseen by the Saluda Downtown Foundation, Inc. with support from the City of Saluda. The Saluda Downtown Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the arts, beautification, historic preservation, cultural development and economic development in downtown Saluda.

Join us for Mountain Page Theater’s production of The Little Mermaid!
The cast of this show is incredibly talented and excited to take this public May 17th-25th. You’ll see some familiar YAK and adult faces as well as an exciting number of new faces!
Our Ariel, Sydney Forbes, who you’ll recognize from last fall’s production, is a typhoon of pure, animated talent and energy. Mandy Dimond, our Mary Poppins’ Mrs. Banks will be glorious as the wronged – and very murderous – Ursula. Laugh your socks off as Chef Louis, Zachary Eden and our Burt, takes the stage again to slaughter some fish and capture Sebastian, who is played by Ashley Sandahl. The adorable and talented Tatum Saucier who played Ms. Northbrook in Mary Poppins is taking the stage as one of Ariel’s 6 Mersisters. We’re sure you’ll remember Allen McCullough, who took the stage as Daddy Warbucks and Georg in Annie and The Sound of Music and is expertly playing Grimsby in this production. We have a whopping 26 children in this play who are starring as Flotsam and Jetsam, Flounder, Mersisters, Sea Creatures, Bay Animals, Chefs, Tap-Dancing Seagulls and more!
Based on one of Hans Christian Andersen's most beloved stories and the classic animated film, Disney's The Little Mermaid is a hauntingly beautiful love story for the ages. With music by eight-time Academy Award winner Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater, and a compelling book by Doug Wright, this fishy fable will capture your heart with its irresistible songs including "Under the Sea," "Kiss the Girl," and "Part of Your World.”

LIVE Music at The Purple Onion
Thursday Evening @ 7:30 p.m.
Saturday Evening @ 8 p.m.
*Cover Charge*
May 2nd, Thursday ~Alexa Rose - $15 Tickets
A singer/songwriter, Alexa Rose is a wonderful representation of roots music, playing right into the pocket of Americana music. She combines the mountain music of her homeland with a bit of folk, rock, country, and pop to her unique stamp on American roots music. Her multidimensional voice is familiar and yet totally her own. She twangs and croons, tumbles and soars. Sounding like a soul child of Bob Dylan and Dolly Parton, it’s the voice of somebody who has loved and lost and has stories to tell about it all. Alexa Rose’s songs are ruled by tradition, but without the constraints of time and place, allowing her to reach out and speak deeply to all who listen.
May 4th, Saturday ~ Hannah & The Wistfuls - $10 Tickets
Hannah Kaminer is an artist and singer-songwriter writing songs about love, loss, and home. Raised in small towns in Western North Carolina, she fuses echoes of Appalachian and country traditions with wistful, Americana-style songwriting.
May 9th, Thursday ~ Jon Shain - $10 Tickets
Jon Shain is a veteran singer-songwriter who’s been turning heads for years with his words, his fiery acoustic guitar work, and his evolved musical style – combining improvised piedmont blues with bluegrass, swing, and ragtime.
May 11th, Saturday ~ Brother and the Hayes - $10 Tickets
Brother and The Hayes is a sibling led, Americana/folk band based in Tennessee. David (Brother) and Jennie Hayes (The Hayes) found that their love for the blues, traditional country music, and bluegrass was the perfect vehicle for their playful, honest, and story-driven songwriting. You would be hard pressed to find a band that writes more authentically and has more fun playing together. The rapport between brother and sister on stage is something to behold as they draw you in and make you feel like part of the family.
May 16th, Thursday ~ Michael Reno Harrell - $10 Tickets
Michael Reno Harrell is an award-winning songwriter, as well as a veteran storyteller and entertainer, and he’s from the South. One could compare Michael's performances to his granddaddy's pocket knife: well-worn and familiar feeling, but razor sharp, and with a point. His original songs and stories have been described as “Appalachian grit and wit” but, as his writing shows, Michael’s awareness is much broader than the bounds of his boyhood home or even the Southern Experience. Between the approachable, feel-good nature of his music, and vivid story-telling that leaves you smiling, Michael creates an auditory experience that has to be witnessed in person.
May 18h, Saturday ~ Reedy River String Band - $10 Tickets
Reedy River String Band has taken the Southeast of the United States by storm the past few years with their fresh take on Appalachian roots music. Reedy River's sound is modern bluegrass with foot stompin' elements of jam and rock n' roll inspired by the various touring and recording experiences of its members. In any given show, Multi-instrumentalist Sterling Waite interchanges mandolin, fiddle, banjo, and harmonica to bring a range of textures to the band's live performances. With Rush Morgan on guitar and Mark Dye on upright bass, all three of the members are songwriters and lead singers, lending a depth and variety of original material beyond the band’s relatively short time together.
May 23rd, Thursday ~ Danielle Howle - $10 Tickets
A lifelong artist and natural storyteller, Howle has lived a million lives in one, releasing well over a dozen studio albums in a four-decade career that has traversed genres, styles, and cultures, encompassing everything from country-swamp-blues and jazz to folk, southern rock, indie, and Americana – all while endlessly exploring the depths of the human condition. She’s opened for legends like Bob Dylan and Bonnie Raitt. This talented musician is a show you don’t want to miss.
May 25th, Saturday ~ Tina & Her Pony - $10 Tickets
Indie, Appalachian-folk band, Tina & Her Pony, was formed in 2009 in Asheville, North Carolina by Tina Collins. Internationally known for their tight, sweet, smooth harmonies and simple, exposed, crafted instrumentation on cello, tenor ukulele & guitar, Tina and Her Pony has a fresh, palatable, sound that is bewitching. With warm smiles and honest simplicity, Tina & Her Pony bring a unique sound to the American folk tradition, featuring original songs that echo the sound of Appalachia, while creating new waves with radical, queer lyrics, uncommon instrumentation, and vocals tighter than your mamas’ brazier.
May 30th, Thursday ~ Seth & Sara - $10 Tickets
Seth Brand is an Americana Rock/Pop/Country songwriter and has been performing his original, heartfelt and inspiring tunes at various establishments throughout the country as well as several radio shows. With wife, Sara, at his side, playing percussion, the Brands set out for their first full time tour in October of 2018. Seth never fails to captivate the crowd with his passionate riffs and his mesmerizing vocals. He is the winner of three Indi.com Original Songwriter awards and has been showcased all throughout his hometown of St. Louis, and now the country.

Please Slam That Door!
By Cappy Hall Rearick
BAM! The screen door slams behind me and I am pulled quickly back to the year 1950. There’s not a plastic surgeon anywhere in the world that can promise such instant results.
I love the sound a screen door makes — it has a tone uniquely its own, one not easily duplicated. Where I live, we have screen porches, NOT screened-in porches. It is considered by most Southerners to be one of life’s true necessities. While keeping blood-thirsty mosquitoes at bay, it also keeps alive some of the romance attached to the Old South. Screen porches remind us of when people were more loving and less harried.
I’m a Southern woman who needs my screen porch more than I need corporation ulcers. I like drinking my morning coffee on the porch while watching cardinals eat breakfast. I like ending my day on the porch with a glass of wine and the love of my life beside me.
I used to live on a golf course where a moratorium was put on morning joggers and late afternoon walkers on the golf paths. I missed seeing neighbors as they walked by; I missed inviting them to come sit for a spell on my porch. Our once friendly neighborhood became sterile. A little too perfect. A landscape painting. A still life.
But when was life ever static? Growing up in the Fifties in the Old South could not have been less perfect. My parents worked hard and took pride in what they accomplished on Daddy’s meager salary as the town’s police chief. Goals? Their objectives were to provide a decent education for their kids and to do whatever it took to make our lives easier than theirs had been.
In the not-too-distant past, we often thought of the Southern woman as barefoot and pregnant, a homebody who spent her days putting up butterbeans in Mason jars. However, women in the New South are more likely to be top executives at Coca-Cola. She does an excellent job while having kids, face-lifts and tummy tucks. I dress each morning in Fruit of the Loom sweats; she puts on designer suits and proceeds to put in a full day putting out FAXES.
Unlike the old order, the New South woman doesn’t cook. She makes phone calls to make certain dinner will be delivered by the time she gets home from the office. She hires a nanny to tend the children; she takes care of business on her iPhone at their soccer games.
This new breed of Southern woman doesn’t screen in her back porch, she encloses it in tinted, tempered glass that surrounds a built-in wet bar. Her exotic plants and hanging ferns, like her children, are professionally tended.
During the holidays, another hired person comes in early one morning to trim the family Christmas tree. The nanny picks up the kids from school and brings them back home to the perfect house with the perfect tree that the kids are told not to get near. Little Timmy’s paper garlands, gently pasted together with white glue, find nary a bare limb from which to hang.
The Steel Magnolia has a well-ordered, well-decorated home and it is a work of art. I appreciate that. I appreciate all things beautiful.
A woman I knew back in the sixties had everything: beauty, money, social position. I didn’t much like her until the year she left her Christmas wreath hanging on the door until after Valentine’s Day. She became human then, imperfect. I liked her after that. Just saying …
Many things in our world have been improved upon. The tire swing that for years and years hung in backyards in towns throughout the country has been made better. Now it’s a pricey tire horse, beautifully created out of a plain old, discarded tire. Modern ingenuity at its best.
Toxin-free ceramic cookware makes cleaning grits pots a piece of cake. Ceramic cookware is my friend. And let’s face it … only a fool would find fault with a dishwasher.
There are some other things that don’t need improving. Apple bobbing doesn’t. Ferris Wheels don’t. Cane pole fishing on a riverbank with Grandpa, the rite of passage no costly video game will ever top. These things don’t need any improvements.
Holding hands with the love of my life while watching a Southern sunset on a porch? Priceless, when accompanied by the slamming of a screened door.

Greetings Reader,
Wood Berry Gallery is inviting YOU!
Periodically we feature an “almost solo show” for one of our regular artists. It’s a chance to immerse yourself in the body of work of one of your favorites, meet the artist, and learn about their process, all while sipping wine and nibbling snacks among other folks who are also fascinated by learning more!
Jan’s work is contemporary and relatable. Her sense of whimsy and humor is a refreshing addition to what you will see
elsewhere. Looking at her work you will sometimes feel as though you are sharing an inside joke or experiencing a secret perspective.
Be adventurous! C’mon out!
If attending solo is more your style,
the work will be hanging through May 18th
(though I can’t promise the snacks!)

The button was invented in ancient times and was originally worn decoratively, sometimes as a display of wealth or status. Save the date for Tryon Little Theater’s season closer: “The Importance of Being Earnest”
Playing for two weekends, May 2-5 and May 9-12, at the Tryon Little Theater Workshop in Tryon, is Oscar Wilde’s most popular play, “The Importance of Being Earnest”. A trivial comedy for serious people, was first performed on the London stage in 1895. Set in the late Victorian era, it satirizes Victorian conformity and social mores.
The play tells the story of two men, Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff, who both assume the identity of a fictional man named Ernest – that leads to a mishmash of problems along the way, causing all sorts of predicaments.
A wonderful group of actors has been cast: playing John “Jack” Worthing, J.P. is Kip Arrowood, Maggie Carter plays Cecily Cardew, and Kat Jones is Merriman. Luke Laughter is Algernon Moncrieff, Hillary MacArthur plays the Hon. Gwendolen Fairfax, with Paul Noga as the Rev. Canon Chasuble, D.D. Laura Depta Peal portrays Lady Bracknell, Jim Powell is Lane, Mollie Turner plays Miss Prism, and Seth and Greg Coots are the servants.
Directed by Brian Holcomb, tickets are $20 and $12 for those under 18. Visit www.tltinfo.org for tickets on-line, or call 828-859-2466.

SLIP Saluda Living In Place (SLIP) is looking for volunteers!
At SLIP, we believe that aging should be a positive experience. We are committed to providing opportunities for seniors to connect with their communities, learn new skills, and engage in meaningful activities. Our programs are designed to support seniors in living independently and with dignity. We have a team of dedicated professionals who are passionate about serving seniors. Our services include neighbor to neighbor visits, transportation, home safety assessments, and more. We also offer educational programs on topics such as health and wellness, financial planning, and technology.
Would you consider joining our village in our mission to empower seniors to live their best lives?
Here are just a few of our volunteer opportunities:
Neighbor to Neighbor Sometimes seniors feel lonely or isolated, or have difficulty accessing essential services. You could volunteer to visit on a regular basis to provide companionship and information. Sometimes just having a chat with someone who cares can make all the difference.
Transportation - Transportation is vital for seniors to access essential services, engage in social activities, and maintain a sense of freedom. However, as individuals age, various factors, such as limited mobility, health conditions, or the absence of a reliable support network, can make transportation challenging. Would you be open to providing transportation to someone in need?
Home Safety - We need experienced contractors or handymen to help determine what needs to be done to make senior homes safer and more accessible. Home Safety Assessments for the elderly include the exterior of the home, all entry areas, every room including bathrooms, bedrooms, laundry room, garage, basement, kitchen and dining room, lighting evaluation, fire safety and electrical safety. Depending on what needs to be done, SLIP may be able to provide free home repair services for aging adults. Would you consider using your skills to help a neighbor in need?
The Veteran's Breakfast - Every first Wednesday of the month we cook breakfast for the Veterans of Saluda at the Saluda Senior Center. The veterans that attend get to connect with old friends and make new ones. Having fun is an important part of living and numerous studies confirm the beneficial power of friendship and social activity. We all eat great and have a blast at the breakfast! If you would like to volunteer with the Veterans breakfast please reach out to Ashley Sandahl at ashley@lookingglassrealty.com
BE A VOLUNTEER! Remain a vital part of our community by offering time, talent and treasure. Being a volunteer has lots of benefits. It can bring meaning and purpose to your life, while increasing your self-esteem and wellbeing. Volunteering can also relieve stress and alleviate symptoms of depression. As well as having a positive impact on your community, volunteering can improve your relationships.
Reach out to Cindy Hemenway
by email at
hemenway.cindy@gmail.com or phone at (828) 749-3024 if you would like to help enrich the lives of the aging adults in our community with SLIP.
PRESERVING A PICTURESQUE AMERICA
Hooray!! Saluda Living in Place (SLIP) will offer a seminar presented by Scott “Doc” Varn on Wednesday, May 15 as part of its ongoing Community Education series. As you probably already know, Doc recently opened a PAPA studio right here in Saluda on 176 across from the Green River Bar-b-Que. And because of its unique approach to art/nature, PBS has done a series on this PAPA movement.
SLIP invites you to join us on Wednesday May 15 at 10 a.m. at the Saluda Center to learn more firsthand from Doc Varn, an innovator in the PAPA movement. And one of Saluda’s very own.

Conservation Easements
Why would landowners place their property under easement? They would be losing most or all of the future residential and commercial development rights of the property. Why would they place their property under easement when they could sell it for development and make more money?
There are several benefits landowners can receive by placing an easement on their property:
—Assurance that the parcel will NEVER be developed, even after they are gone.
—Lower property taxes due to the reduced present use value of the the land.
—Significant federal and state income tax benefits.
—The landowner may use the federal tax deduction to complete a backdoor Roth IRA conversion without having to pay for the taxes due on conversion.
—The landowner and descendants can continue to enjoy the property without pressure from developers.
—Most importantly, the conservation easement assures landowners that their gift has made life better for future generations.
These are just a few of the reasons folks decide on a conservation easement. If you are interested in learning more, please contact the Saluda Community Land Trust Office.

SALUDA GARDEN CLUB EVENT
Any day of the week you might run into one of our town’s most illustrious and talented citizens. That person, Susan Casey, might be wearing her chef’s hat, her woodworker’s hat, or her gardener’s hat. But for the Saluda Garden Club’s May 20th event, she will definitely have her gardener’s hat on.
Members interested in touring her Saluda cut flower garden/business will be gathering to do just that. Susan was raised on a tobacco farm in eastern North Carolina, went to Appalachian State for a degree in Industrial Arts, used those talents for a while but fell back in love with her culinary skills, learned while cooking for the tobacco workers all those year ago, and put them to good use. In 1990 she created the “Occasional Caterer” business, went on to open The Purple Onion with her sister in 1998, but ‘retired’ in 2020. Her local cut flower business supplies blossoms to The Purple Onion, the Pop-Up Pantry, and The SPOT.
For more information on this event or to join the Garden Club,
call club President Susan Cannon at 937-623-1998.

DO NOT CALL PEST CONTROL!
Most pest control companies will exterminate baby animals. Call me and I will capture and deliver any baby animals to a wildlife rehabilitation center that I am connected with.
These animals are crucial to our environment. Skunks and opossums are beneficial to farmers, gardeners, and landowners because they feed on large numbers of insects and rodents. Opossums eat ticks, reducing the Lyme disease carrying tick population and eating nearly 95% of them that cross their path. They are resistant to snake venom and eat venomous species. Squirrels are natures gardeners. Raccoons feed on carrion, which assists in eliminating decomposing animal matter. Foxes control rodent populations. All of our local critters are crucial to maintaining a happy ecosystem.
Please call or text day or night, and I will assist you by catching and bringing these critters to the appropriate people for rehabilitation and then release to large, forested areas away from our neighborhoods. (828) 817-6515

Do You Know?
Where can you find Sharp Lobed Hepatica, Bloodroot, or Cutleaf Toothwort? Maybe the better question is, do you want to find such things with such scary names? Well, you should know these scary things are lurking all around us and even though they come with frightening names they are among the hidden beauty found all around Saluda, but especially at Pearson’s Fall and Glen.
Spring is a lovely time at the Falls where you can take a leisurely walk among the many wildflowers that peak out in beautiful surroundings. A 90 waterfall, easy walking path, Jack-in-the-Pulpit, Trilliums, Mountain Lettuce, and many more await your visit.
Come by the Saluda Visitor Center for more information on Pearson’s Fall and Glen.
There are many activities going on in our area in May. These activities are posted in the Visitor Center. If you have events or activities that you would like to post in the Visitor Center, please send them or email them to Lynn Casey at caseysaluda@gmail.com
The Visitor Center hours are 11:00 am to 4pm daily.
The Visitor Center, located at 20 W. Main Street, has a nice open room with information about Saluda and the surrounding area and two ADA-compliant restrooms. The Center features a slideshow created by the Saluda Historical Society that highlights Saluda’s history.
The center is run by an all-volunteer staff and all operating expenses are split equally between the Saluda Downtown Foundation, Saluda Business Association, and the Saluda Tourism Development Authority.
Additionally, we’d like to invite visitors and residents alike to visit the Center to learn about Saluda’s Historic walks or scenic drives, get hiking trail maps and area maps. We also have “Things to do in Saluda” list, restaurant menus, lodging choices and a variety of business pamphlets. We continue to put out a call for more volunteers for short shifts to provide information and keep the facility in shape. The shifts are easy and fun, you meet nice people, and you will be properly trained before starting. Please consider volunteering or just drop by during hours to say hello!
If you are interested in volunteering or learning more about the Visitor Center please contact Lynn Casey at caseysaluda@gmail.com.

There will be a free screening of My Beautiful Stutter,
an award-winning documentary film about SAY: The Stuttering Association for the Young.
The film is directed by Ryan Gielen with executive producers Paul Rudd, Mariska Hargitay, Peter Hermann, George Springer and Patrick James Lynch. The film is produced by Michael Alden and Ryan Gielen.
This documentary follows the lives of a handful of young people who stutter and includes footage of them and the people they meet in their journey with SAY. Some of the footage is on the grounds of Camp Blue Star in Hendersonville from the years when CampSAY used those facilities in the summer. The 2-week overnight summer camp is now located in New York State.
The screening will take place on Saturday, May 11th at 10:30 AM in the upstairs meeting room of the Saluda public library.
This showing will be hosted by Saluda resident Ellen Rogers, a stuttering ally and member of the CampSAY staff since 2017. Before the start of the documentary, Ellen will share some of her personal experience with the organization and the amazing community of young people who stutter. She will be available for conversation after the film.
The event is open to the public and appropriate for all ages, though viewers should be aware that the film contains some emotionally “heavy” content.

Be sure and watch until the very end, all the way through the credits, to see lots of old photographs of Saluda and listen to town folk talk about why Saluda is so special to them. Here is a detailed description:
Eljapa Media Group worked with the Historic Saluda Committee to record over 14 hours of oral history video interviews, copied hundreds of old photographs from private collections and received more than a dozen original cassette tapes of interviews conducted by Charlene Pace and Anne Osborne for their 1981 book Saluda, N.C. 100 Years 1881-1981. The City of Saluda provided seed money to launch this project and generous donors helped fund the remaining cost of this grassroots project. The film premiere was held July 2, 2011 at 5 p.m. at the Saluda Mountain Jamboree. The premiere was held prior to the Saluda 130th Birthday Celebration square dance that was held that same night at 7 p.m.

A couple of weeks ago, two staff and six volunteers from MANNA Foodbank spent the day at the Pantry painting the interior and helping us move into our storage building. They dubbed the event “Operation Saluda Swarm”. Three large freezers, lots of shelving and many boxes were moved into the building to create more room in the Pantry for our shoppers and volunteers.
MANNA not only operates the largest foodbank in WNC, but they also help smaller food pantries like ours with projects like the Saluda Swarm. We are grateful for all the ways they partner with us to reduce food insecurity in this community.
We still have a few shares left to offer for our summer CSA! Please email me at kpelz@saludapantry.com for more information.

HELP ENTERTAIN OUR ITALIAN STUDENT VISITORS
What a great response so far from the Saluda Community to help show our two Italian student visitors how we live and have fun in Saluda and these beautiful mountains. Four Saludians will take them into their homes and 10 more families have volunteered to take them to cultural events or show them the area. We need to fill a few more slots. The girls have specifically asked to go to barbeque places, play putt-putt golf, try go-carting, and go shopping at the outlet mall and at Costco and just a local grocery. Can you help? Here are some other ideas:
* Hiking on area trails, exploring the Blue Ridge Parkway, a picnic, tubing on the Green River, a day at Lake Lure/Chimney Rock or Dupont Forest.
*Biltmore house (if you have a season pass), Carl Sandburg House, the Equestrian Center, Pisgah Forest (maybe sliding rock), tubing down the Green River, a winery visit one day when there is music, or WHATEVER you can think of! LET’S FILL UP THEIR CALENDAR!!
Our visitors will be in Saluda from July 10 to July 26. To volunteer for an activity please contact Pam Gray at pmgray7@rsnet.org, or 828-749-3006.
SPECIAL THANKS TO OUR LOCAL FOOD MERCHANTS WHO ARE OFFERING THEM A TASTE OF SALUDA CUISINE. When the schedule is clear, we will announce where they will be dining and anyone who wants to meet them and join in a meal can do so.

MEET MASSIMO AND NORA
Massimo has been to Saluda several times and is the owner of the Palazzo where our Sister City tours stay. He provided a week of free accommodations, food, cooking lessons and touring in Abruzzo to our two teachers last April and to Claire Thompson, our Saluda Exchange student, last July. Massimo is chair of the Carunchio Sister City group. Nora is his oldest daughter. She and her childhood friend, Marta, will be our summer student visitors.
NEW TRIP TO 2025 FLOWER FESTIVAL NOW OPEN
June of 2025 will see Saluda travelers and friends flying to Italy to participate in Carunchio’s annual Flower Festival. It is an amazing opportunity to interact with local Carunchio residents and also enjoy all that the Palazzo has to offer…fine red wine, amazing Italian cuisine, trips to explore the Abruzzo region, comfortable accommodations… all for one price after you buy your airfare to Rome. Our Sister City price is much lower than the standard internet price: less than $2,600 per person all-inclusive except airfare. And we’ll help you plan some extra days before or after. For full brochure, contact Judy Thompson, jdt@JDThompsonLaw.com.
SAVE THE DATE!
Jay Wilkinson will be here from Texas on July 17 to present a talk on his book, “A Lie Will Suffice.” It’s the story of his Sicilian family which had strong links to organized crime and all the drama that goes with it. Saluda Sister City will present this dramatic story free to Saludians.
On October 16, Sister City is bringing in La Terza Classes, an Italian Bluegrass band to perform at Tryon Fine Arts Center. Mark your calendars and watch for more details. You can preview them and their music by putting this into your browser: la terza classse

Being a Saluda Historic Depot Docent Brings Lots of Surprises and Blessings
Being a docent is always fun because you never know with whom you might strike up a conversation. Thursday, March 28 was the first day of the Saluda Historic Depot’s 2024 season. On that day, a nice man and his son visited the Depot. The father was very interested in our Southern Railway collection.
|
He, Chuck Oliver, saw a model of a steam engine display and said that it had too many wheels on it. If it were numbered in the 1500 series instead of 1400 it’d be accurate. This is not the kind of information we get from the “average” patron, so I thought it was time to listen instead of talk.
About this time Mike Reeves joined us for the very interesting conversations that followed.
Chuck said his father, Elmer R. Oliver Jr., was manager (and vice president) of the Asheville freight yard for over 25 years. And, just in case I might try to top him, he added that his grandfather (Elmer R. Sr.) was also very high in Southern Railway management. Turns out the Oliver freight yard in New Orleans was named after him.
Chuck saw in our display case a copy of a 1959 Southern employee register. He found his father’s name at the head of the list. It was a sentimental moment for him since his father had died about 25 years ago – and he said this was one of the best museum visits he could remember.
It was a coincidence that he and his son were heading to the Chattanooga Southern Railway Museum to donate four volumes of appreciation letters that his grandfather had received in 1949 for his 25th anniversary of railway management. Chuck got those letters from his car and gave us the opportunity to get a look at them.
They were all very interesting, but one was VERY significant. It was from Robert Tyre Jones, Jr., a lawyer in Atlanta. Mr. Jones played a little golf in the 1920’s and co-founded the Augusta National Golf Course and the Masters Tournament. So, we have stashed away a copy of a signed letter from the famous Bobby Jones.
Consider being a docent. You never know what great story may be behind the casual visitor that happens to drop in the Depot.
Dave O’Brien, SHD docent

Saluda Historic Depot Train Tales Features Thomas D Perry
Historian Thomas D. "Tom" Perry was born in Mount Airy, North Carolina, and grew up just over the border in Ararat, Patrick County, Virginia, where Civil War General J. E. B. Perry has written or published over thirty books on regional history focusing on the Civil War. His latest book is entitled Beyond Mayberry: A Memoir of Andy Griffith and Mount Airy North Carolina.
Mr. Perry is also the author of A Dinky Railroad: The Mount Airy and Eastern Railway. On May 16, he will speak at Saluda Train Tales about the history of the Dinky Railway, a narrow gauge railroad that ran from Mount Airy, NC to Kibler Valley, VA.
Join us for the Friday, May 16 Train Tales and meet our guest, Tom Perry. This event begins at 7:00 PM and doors open at 6:30.

Yeah It’s May! Spring has sprung and River Dog Run is geared up for this fabulous time of year! We have lots of new artwork including Susie Hearn’s puppy dogs that love sitting on a porch! And a crow decoy by William Veasey that is a collector’s item. Our tea towel “Life is better on the PORCH” defines the season for all of us as Saluda is very porch-oriented!
| |
Along with our ever popular “Saluda State of Mind” and “Queen of quite a lot” pillows we have versions with wonderful fabric and hand-painted designs for your outdoor swing, sofa or chair. All shapes and sizes will adapt to your furniture or guests!
Since many porches are known for Happy Hour, we have new wine racks and wine glasses to enhance your collection. Our pottery wine glasses are sturdy and hold a good pour to cut down on the number of times you have to get up and refill! For Sangria lovers we have pitchers that are useful and conversation starters!
| |
If you need additional seating, River Dog Run has upholstered and caned chairs that would live well on a porch. We even have a chair made with belts for another conversation piece!
If you like to serve appetizers, we got the pottery for you! Our brie dish is the perfect size and comes with two recipes. Our garlic grater is a one-dish piece where you can grate the garlic and just add oil and spices and serve right out of it! For more elaborate offerings we have a mushroom quiche dish that will make for a delicious dinner.
To enhance the porch aroma, we have wonderful smelling candles...the most popular flavor being Green River Currant at the moment. We also have Saluda Sweet Pea, Blackberry Trails and Grapefruit, Carolina Pine and Mountain Magnolia. One of these is bound to appeal to your nose!
The aforementioned crow that we have by William Veasey deserves a special note. Veasey has numerous pieces on display at the Decoy Museum and fans worldwide collect him. Ducks Unlimited donated a piece of his work to the Maine home of the late George H.W. Bush and he served on the national board of the group. We lucked into one of his pieces and it is quite a find!
So, spring into River Dog Run as you are out and about in this glorious season! We are always pleased to see regular customers and those who come in for the first time! Well-behaved dogs are also welcome!
River Dog Run hours are Monday through Saturday from 11-5PM. Sunday from Noon-4PM. For more information or an appointment call 828-551-1461.

"Everything I know, I learned from dogs." –Nora Roberts
My Wonderful Dogs!
My companions on this glorious journey.
Kaya (on the left) was adopted from Foothills in August 2019, she is 6 years old this month! My heart.
Please consider rescuing or adopting, if you decide to bring an animal into your family.
Foothills Humane Society
LO (on the right) was dumped here in Saluda in 2020 and found her way to us. She is our unstoppable tank, running full speed into every blessed day. She turned 4 years old on November 1st!
We have so much to learn from these amazing animals. And, all the other amazing animals.
There is a great group of dogs and companions who meet on Sunday mornings at 10:00am, at the Saluda Dog Park. Come join the pups and some people too.

Kaya is uncertain if you are supposed to be here... |
Dear Fabulous Readers,
Every week as I volunteer at our Visitors Center, I get to meet people, just wandering through, folks who come for the shops, food or outdoor fun and people looking to move here. It is always such fun to learn about what draws people to Saluda and signing up new readers!
So many people are drawn here. What a joy to share with them. If you are a resident, a visitor or a sometimes resident we welcome your readership!
This newsletter is a creation of love. Its sole purpose is to celebrate and shine a light on all the wonder that is Saluda.
Thank you for reading.
Drop me a line and let me know what you think.
