The renowned Fred T. Korematsu Center for Law and Equality and its executive director Robert S. Chang, professor of law, will be joining UCI Law, starting July 1, 2024. Chang founded the center — named for pioneering civil rights hero Fred T. Korematsu — in 2009 at the Seattle University School of Law with the mission to use legal research, litigation advocacy and clinical education to achieve durable social change related to racial equity and social justice.

In a new report by the Student Loan Law Initiative, UCI Law Professor Dalié Jiménez and co-authors Sultana Fouzia, Jonathan Glater and Marshall Steinbaum identified six categories of financial hardship they say the Education Department needs to consider in its student loan debt relief talks. On Dec. 12, the team formally briefed the Education Department's student loan forgiveness committee on the report’s findings and recommendations during the department's negotiated rulemaking process.

In a remarkable journey as a refugee from war-torn Kharkiv, Ukraine, to the halls of UCI Law, LL.M. student Yurii Zinchenko has exemplified resilience and a commitment to making a difference, spearheading efforts to provide generators to hospitals and other essential facilities in besieged Ukrainian cities. “If you’re knocking and they don’t open the door, then use the window,” is what Yurii’s father always said to him, a message he finds more prescient than ever.

On Dec. 6, the UCI Intellectual Property, Arts, and Technology Clinic (IPAT) submitted an amicus brief on behalf of the International Documentary Association and Kartemquin Films in Green v. U.S. Dept. of Justice, challenging the constitutionality of Section 1201 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).
Led by IPAT director Prof. Jack Lerner, the brief was prepared by IPAT certified second-year UCI Law students Cooper King and Paul Pouzet-Poonegar, and with valuable assistance from second-year UCI Law students Valentina Comar and Richard Yoo.
