Welcome to another edition of Overhead Lifting Insights by AFE Crane! In this issue, we aim to deepen your understanding of bridge cranes—the backbone of efficient material handling operations. Let's dive into the key components and types of bridge cranes that are essential to know.

Key Components of a Bridge Crane:

  • Bridge: The bridge, also called the girder, is the horizontal beam that spans the width of the work station or facility. It moves along the runways and supports the hoist or trolley.
  • End Trucks: End trucks are mounted on either end of the bridge and house the wheels that enable the bridge to move along the runways.
  • Hoist/Trolley: The hoist or trolley is the mechanism responsible for lifting and moving loads horizontally along the bridge. It can be manually operated, electrically powered, or operated by remote control, depending on the application & load capacity requirements.
  • Runways: Runways are the parallel beams installed along the length of the workstation or facility to support the bridge & allow it to travel back & forth.

Types of Bridge Cranes:

  • Single Girder Bridge Crane: This type of crane has one bridge girder supported by end trucks. It is commonly used for light to moderate lifting applications.
  • Double Girder Bridge Crane: With two bridge girders supported by end trucks, this crane offers increased stability and lifting capacity, making it suitable for heavy-duty applications. A double girder crane may also be chosen when maximizing head room & high hook.
