SUNDAY OF THE EXPULSION

Starting this Monday, we've commenced the profound period of Great Lent (Medz Bahk), marking a solemn and introspective phase within the Church. The symbolic closure of the altar signifies the narrative of Adam and Eve's expulsion from the Garden of Eden (Refer to Genesis, chapters 2 and 3). Notably, Holy Communion isn't administered during the liturgical proceedings. This interval prompts devout reflection and repentance as we traverse our spiritual path toward Easter.

Each Sunday throughout Lent bears a distinct thematic essence. This forthcoming Sunday, February 18, is designated as the Sunday of the Expulsion (Ardaksman Giragi). Its narrative seamlessly extends from the preceding Sunday's Paregentan, focusing on Adam and Eve's lamentable descent from grace and subsequent exile from Paradise.

Fr. Haroutioun Tachejian

Fr. Haroutioun Tachejian's sermon on February 11, 2024,

Title: "Journey of Lent: From Joyous Living to Spiritual Renewal"

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Poon Paregentan marks a time of joyous living and celebration before the solemn season of Lent. It is a time when we come together as a community to rejoice in the blessings of life and fellowship before embarking on a journey of spiritual introspection and renewal.

In the broader Christian tradition, Lent represents a period of 40 days of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving, mirroring the 40 days that Jesus spent in the desert preparing for His ministry. It is a time of preparation, a time to draw closer to God through self-examination and reconciliation. Just as Jesus prepared Himself for His ministry, we too use this season to prepare our hearts and minds for the joyous celebration of Easter – the Feast of Feasts, the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.

In the Armenian Church, Poon Paregentan serves as a poignant reminder of our place in God's plan. As we celebrate "joyous living day," we reflect on the abundance and joy that God intended for us in the Garden of Eden. However, as we enter into the season of Great Lent, the closing of the altar curtain during the Divine Liturgy serves as a solemn symbol of our  from the Kingdom of God – a reminder of the expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Garden.

During Great Lent, the closed curtain stands as a visual sign of our need for forgiveness and restoration. It invites us to journey inward, to examine our lives and seek reconciliation with God and one another. It is a time of spiritual awakening, a time to confront our shortcomings and embrace the transformative power of God's love and grace.

As we embark on this sacred journey of Great Lent, let us heed the wisdom of the Early Church Fathers. Saint John Chrysostom reminds us, "Fasting is the change of every part of our life, because the sacrifice of the fast is not the abstinence but the distancing from sins." Through fasting, prayer, and almsgiving, we create space in our lives for God to work His miracles of healing and redemption.

Let us also remember the words of Saint Ephrem the Syrian, who said, "The time of repentance has come, let us begin to seek God. Let us purify ourselves and become like Him; let us wash away the filth of the flesh." Great Lent offers us the opportunity to purify our hearts and minds, to rid ourselves of the distractions and temptations that keep us from fully experiencing God's presence in our lives.

As we journey through Great Lent, let us be mindful of the transformative power of this sacred season. Let us embrace the disciplines of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving as spiritual tools for growth and renewal. Let us seek forgiveness and reconciliation with God and one another, knowing that His mercy is boundless.

May this season of Great Lent be a time of spiritual awakening and renewal for each and every one of us. May we emerge from this journey transformed and renewed, ready to embrace the joy of Easter with hearts full of gratitude and praise. Amen.

WESTERN DIOCESE’S DEBUTANTE BALL TO TAKE PLACE FEBRUARY 18, 2024

His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate of the Western Diocese and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Western Diocese are proud to present the Diocese’s Debutante Ball on Sunday, February 18, 2024 at the world-famous Beverly Wilshire Hotel.

For nearly 50 years, the Debutante Ball has been a beloved tradition in the Armenian community. It is a celebration of family and a joyous occasion to reconnect with friends. This year, 19 young women including many from churches throughout the Diocese will be presented as debutantes and along with their escorts will take part in this time-honored and memorable event.

This year’s Mistress of Ceremonies is Sona Movsesian. Movsesian has worked for Conan O’Brien on both his TV show and podcast, accompanying him on a trip to Armenia which was documented and featured on one of O’Brien’s TV specials. She is a New York Times bestselling author with her 2022 book, The World’s Worst Assistant. In recent years she has also assisted a number of organizations in their support of causes affecting the Armenian community.

All are invited to attend the Debutante Ball, as well as show support by placing an ad in the event’s keepsake booklet to extend congratulations to the participants. All proceeds from the booklet will benefit The Archbishop Vatche Hovsepian Hye Camp Program and Artsakh relief efforts.

The black-tie-optional event begins with a cocktail reception at 5:00, followed by the presentation of Debutantes at 6:00. Dinner and dancing will follow. The Ladies Auxiliary is excited to announce that Greg Hosharian & the Armenian Pops Ensemble will provide the music throughout the evening.

Cindy Norian and Audrey Matoesian, co-chairs of the Ladies Auxiliary, invite you to attend what promises to be an unforgettable evening.

Matthew 5:17-48

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophet; I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one letter, not one stroke of a letter, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, will be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

“You have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, ‘You shall not murder’; and ‘whoever murders shall be liable to judgment.’ But I say to you that if you are angry with a brother or sister, you will be liable to judgment and if you insult a brother or sister, you will be liable to the council; and if you say, ‘You fool,’ you will be liable to the hell of fire. Do when you are offering your gift at the altar, if you remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother or sister, and then come and offer your gift. Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are on the way to court with him, or your accuser may hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you will be thrown into prison. Truly I tell you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny.

“You are heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to go to hell.

“Again, you have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but carry out the vows you have made to the Lord.’ But I say to you, Do not swear at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. Let your word be ‘Yes, Yes’ or ‘No, No’; anything more than this comes from the evil one.

“You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I say to you, Do not resist an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also; and if anyone wants to sue you and take your coat, give your cloak as well; and if anyone forces you to go one mile, go also the second mile. Give to everyone who begs from you, and do not refuse anyone who wants to borrow from you.

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.”

Romans 12:1-13:10

I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect.

For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of yourself more highly than you ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. For as in one body we have many members, and not all the members have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another. We have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us: prophecy, in proportion to faith; ministry, in ministering; the teacher, in teaching; the exhorter, in exhortation; the giver, in generosity; the leader, in diligence; the compassionate, in cheerfulness.

Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor. Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers.

Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are. Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all. If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave room for the wrath of God; for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” No, “if your enemies are hungry, feed them; if they are thirsty, give them something to drink; for by doing this you will heap burning coals on their heads.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Let every person be subject to the governing authorities; for there is no authority except from God, and those authorities that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists authority resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Do you wish to have no fear of the authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive its approval; for it is God’s servant for your good. But if you do what is wrong, you should be afraid, for the authority does not bear the sword in vain! It is the servant of God to execute wrath on the wrongdoer. Therefore one must be subject, not only because of wrath but also because of conscience. For the same reason you also pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, busy with this very thing. Pay to all what is due them—taxes to whom taxes are due, revenue to whom revenue is due, respect to whom respect is due, honor to whom honor is due.

Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery; You shall not murder; You shall not steal; You shall not covet”; and any other commandment, are summed up in this word, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore, love is the fulfilling of the law.

Memorial Monument Plaques

New Information

The Memorial Committee is responsible for the Memorial Monument and Wall Plaques. These are Plaques that have the names of those who have been a part of St. James Church. Family members may want them to be remembered at St. James. Several names include those who have not passed but want their name located near their recently deceased family member. We have their names engraved but do not read their names aloud at the annual St. James Day Memorial service in December. Listed below are the names ready to be engraved. Please ensure the names are correctly spelled and notify the church office or Patty Samarge of the corrections.

Dn. Barouyr Kizirian; Lily Ring Balian; Larklo K. Der Sarkisian; Zhirayr Davitian;

Gary Jack Krikorian; Shirley Krikorian Hopkins*; Edward "Hoppy" Hopkins*

*Have not passed away but want their names together in the future

There is still time to be included with this round of names. Please notify the office by February 22nd if you still want to engrave a family or friend's name.

We can only put one name per line and the donation is $1200 per name. This is a one-time donation for lifetime recognition.

The Memorial Fund committee is working with the Parish Council and the Gogian Hall Renovation Committee as they prepare a presentation and proposal for approval.

Contact Linda at St. James Church (323) 295-4588 or Patty Samarge, psamarge@yahoo.com for Memorial name corrections or additions.
