Staff Appreciation Events Share Our Gratitude

Our Staff Appreciation Co-chairs Lisa Vanderford-Anderson and Lisa Willis have been busy this February!


On Valentine's Day, they surprised the staff with Valentines balloons, flowers, chocolates, cookies and cupcakes in the Staff Lounge.


Earlier in February they celebrated our wonderful Counseling staff for National School Counseling Week. (See the writeup in this week's Counseling section, below.)

GSA Club Hosting Lambert House Feb. 27

Feb. 27: Come to Genders and Sexuality Alliance (GSA) during lunch where Lambert House, a community center for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning youth in the greater Seattle area, will come to talk to us about what they offer for queer and trans kids in the community.

BSU Panel Discussion with John Binda Feb. 28 PAC

Feb. 28: Black Student Union Club (BSU) is hosting a panel discussion for students in the PAC during lunch. Their guest is Josh Binda, one of the youngest politicians in the U.S., and the first person of color Lynnwood City Council member, who was elected at only 21 years old. Ballard's Latinx Student Union (LSU) is presenting their Latino Night of Celebration at 6 p.m. Friday, March 1 in the Performing Arts Center.

Ping Pong Club to Compete at State April 20

Did you know Ballard High School has a Ping Pong (Table Tennis) Club? Following Mid-Winter Break, the club members will be practicing for the 2023-24 WA State High School Table Tennis Championships, Saturday, April 20 at the Tacoma Table Tennis Club.


Sponsored by the Washington Table Tennis Association and the Tacoma Table Tennis Club, the event includes 14 school clubs (so far) including Ballard, Bishop Blanchet, Ingraham, Lakeside, and Chief Sealth.

Tell Your Story Thru Podcasting

Beyond books, the Ballard HS Library is also a hub of student creativity and expression. It houses a crafting MakerSpace, the Digital Filmmaking classroom, and now one of its study space meeting rooms has been equipped to host podcasts.


It's in that small room where the magic happens as the Yapping Club perfects producing podcasts Fridays during lunch. Yapping Club was formed in the fall by sophomore Cove Brammer. This semester, Cove and the club are teaming up with UW Library Science intern Andrew Quinn to reimagine how BHS podcasts are produced.


They are hoping to inspire Beaver Readers and BHS staff to share their own stories and participate by filling out a survey.

Golden Beaver Scholarships

Seniors: Remember to apply for the Ballard High School Foundation Golden Beaver Scholarships! Mid-Winter Break is a good time to put together your application!


Hughbanks Family Scholarships are awarded to students pursuing further academic or trade education in Washington state and will prioritize students with situational or financial need. Awards are $5,000 for two years.


Golden Beaver Scholarships are awarded to students pursuing further academic or trade education (not limited to schools in Washington). Awards are for one year and can range from $500 to $5,000.

Teacher-Librarian TuesD Chambers is looking for weekly volunteers to come in Monday mornings from 8:30-10:30 a.m. This is a busy time for the library and she would greatly appreciate the assistance! Sign-Up.

Seattle Public Library's Stim Bullitt Civic Courage Scholarship is now open for submissions through March 15.

Service Learning Spotlight

Discovery Park Habitat Restoration

Interested in environmental studies? Want to help restore the Discovery Park South Meadow's native habitat for local wildlife? Join University of Washington Environmental and Forest Sciences student Olivia Anderson and her Capstone team for work parties from 9 a.m. to noon on Fridays and Sundays.


"I am hoping some Ballard HS students would like to come out to the site and get some fieldwork experience and learn about ecology and restoration work," Olivia said. She said she's happy to coordinate other times for students to work on the site too. "My team and I would love to work with the students to help spark interest in the growing field of environmental science, please let me know if you are interested."

Pancake Breakfast

Loyal Heights Community Center is hosting its Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser on Sunday, March 3. Volunteers are needed to assist from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.


Also Volunteers are needed for Spring Egg Hunt at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 30 at the Loyal Heights Community Center and Ballard Community Center (among other park locations). Volunteers are needed to assist with this fun annual event.

Emergency Skills Fair March 23

Volunteers are needed to staff tables at the Emergency Skills Fair Saturday, March 23 at Loyal Heights Community Center.


Students can sign up for a variety of shifts from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. It’s truly a win-win; students learn valuable skills and then educate neighbors.


No experience necessary, organizers ask that volunteers read the information available carefully on the Sign Up site.

Little League Teen Umpires Sought

Thinking about a part time job this spring? Ballard Little League is seeking teen umpires for spring baseball and softball games. No experience necessary, they will train!

Pay is $25-$38 a game (or service hours). Teen will be paired with an adult volunteer umpire for most games.

Musicians Excel at Solo and Ensemble Competition

Ballard High was well represented at the Elliott Bay Music Educators Association Solo and Ensemble competition held this past Saturday, Feb. 10. Many of the musicians will go on to represent our region at the State Competition at Central Washington University on April 26-27.

Coming up soon, start your spring cleaning! Donate unwanted items from your spring cleaning decluttering and benefit BPA!


Goodwill trucks will be parked in the BHS staff parking lot on Saturday, March 16 from 9 a.m. to noon. Bring your donations and your neighbor’s too! For every truck filled, BPA gets $600!

The Spring Athletics Parents/Guardians Meeting is 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 5 in the Gym, including Beaver Gear (Ballard High School merchandise) sales.

Ballard Takes Two Titles at USA Spirit Nationals!

Congratulations to Ballard Cheer for their amazing weekend competing in Anaheim at USA Spirit Nationals. They had amazing showings for their traditional tumbling and fight song divisions.


Gameday is taking home not one, but TWO National Champion titles in Band Dance and Crowdleader. Ballard Cheer is excited to bring home some serious hardware!


Well done Coach Amber, Alex, Maddy and all of our Ballard Cheer athletes for a fantastic season!

Gymnasts Earn 2nd at Districts, Heading for State

Ballard Gymnastics hosted 17 area teams for Districts on Saturday. The team received second place and is headed for State Championships!


State Championships are Feb.23-24 at Sammamish High School.

Wrestlers Make Brawlin' Beaver History

Congratulations to Ballard Wrestling for two state "placers" at the Feb. 16-17 MatClassic at the Tacoma Dome:

Jackie Benson - 3rd place (140)

Lazlo Davis-Rudin - 5th place (215)

Jackie is the highest placer and second girl to place in State in Ballard history. Lazlo is the first male to place since 1995, and second in Ballard history.


Congratulations also to Miles Price (144) who made it to the blood round, or quarterfinals. Huge success!


Congratulations to Lucca Rava (113), Simon Moreno (132), Tommy Megal and Hayden Wiggins (150) who also qualified for state. Thanks to Phoebe Price for the update!

Ballard Swim & Dive Districts Success!

Please congratulate Boys Swim & Dive Kian Vae’ena who placed 3rd in the 100 yard backstroke at Feb. 10 Sea-King Districts.


Kian continued his historic Beaver backstroke run at the Feb. 16-17 State Tournament at the King County Aquatic Center, where he was seeded 9th. (State results weren't available at newsletter deadline.)


Also, congratulations to the 400 Free Relay team of Nathan Williams, Kian Vae’ena, Matteo Montague and Evan Sadler – whose 3:27.99 was the 16th fastest time across all nine 3A District meets. They also earned a spot to compete at State.

Dance Team Competes at Lakes Competition

Congratulations to the Dance Team which participated in their final regular season competition Saturday at Lakes High School in Lakewood.


The team competed in the Dance and Hip-Hop categories.


The team's District Competition is Saturday, March 2.

Girls Ultimate Registration is Open! 

The Ballard Gx Ultimate Frisbee team is open to all girls who want to participate in the Spring Ultimate league.


The season runs from Feb. 26 to May 19 with practices and games occurring during the school week after school. Everyone is welcome and no prior experience is necessary.

Girls Lacrosse registration is open! Come out and have fun with us this spring and become part of the fastest growing sport in the Northwest! Season runs Feb. 27 through May 5. Lacrosse is a no-cut sporteveryone is welcome and no prior experience is necessary. More info and registration.

Registration is OPEN for Boys Lacrosse! Practice begins Feb. 26 with games through May, plus tournaments. Conditioning is now. It is a no-cut sport with Varsity & JV teams. Scholarships are available. The Dam will be rocking with lots of lacrosse excitement!

5th Annual Running of the Beavers March 23

Get ready to lace up your sneakers and join the Ballard High School Foundation's 5th Annual Running of the Beavers 5K Walk/Run at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, March 23 at Golden Gardens. Direct your registration proceeds to your favorite BHS team and/or Performing Arts.

Golfers of all ages and skill levels are invited to sign up for the 24th Annual Victor Salvino Ballard High School Foundation Golf Classic Aug. 16 at Newcastle Golf Club benefiting BHS Athletics, Cheer, Dance Team and Performing Arts!

Loyal Heights CC Teen Program February Calendar

The Loyal Heights Community Center Teen Program offers after-school and summer activities for youth ages 11-18 years old.


This includes pre-employment training, employment opportunities, service-learning opportunities, out-of-school time programs, fitness, social recreation, and more!


Note: Teen Program Coordinator Ron Brown will be on vacation Feb. 12-14, no programming scheduled then.
