EXPLORING THE LEGAL WORLD

PESA leads Cabrillo High School Students to Loyola Law School

Cabrillo High School's Law and Justice Program embarked on a transformative journey to Loyola Law School, offering 50 students a unique insight into the legal profession. Guided by Head Teacher Scott Newman and facilitated by PESA’s Community Representative Emory Gutierrez, the field trip aimed to broaden horizons and illuminate pathways into legal education and careers.

The day commenced with a thorough campus tour, allowing students to immerse themselves in the academic environment of Loyola Law School. This initial exploration set the stage for a deeper dive into legal concepts and practices.

A highlight of the trip was the 'Know Your Rights' presentation hosted by current law school students, which provided essential knowledge on constitutional rights and interactions with law enforcement. Empowering students with practical insights, this session equipped them with tools to navigate legal complexities confidently.

The students then participated in a Teen Court juror training. This training introduced them to the history of the juvenile justice system while fostering critical thinking skills, analytical reasoning and problem solving. Putting this into practice, students visited a mock trial room where they applied theoretical knowledge to a simulated case. Their day ended with an engaging panel discussion with diverse law school students who offered valuable insights into the many career paths and educational pathways one can take. Reflecting on the impact of the field trip, Emory Gutierrez emphasized the importance of exposing students to diverse educational pathways. "Cal States and UCs are preferred choices, but for many high school students, it can be intimidating. Learning that some law students began their journey at community college before transferring to a four-year institution and eventually attending law school can alleviate pressure for our students."

Emory's personal experience underscores the profound impact of educational and career-based field trips. "I remember my own high school experiences with PESA. It was eye-opening to realize the wide range of options available and speak to people who were on the path to being successful.”

The field trip to Loyola Law School exemplifies PESA’s commitment to empowering students and nurturing their aspirations. By providing immersive experiences and valuable insights, such initiatives pave the way for a future generation of legal scholars and advocates.
