What does the ‘D’ stand for in D Day?

Some suggest the D means ‘deliverance’, ‘doom’, debarkation’ but in reality it is none of those. The ‘D’ just means the day of the beginning of a military operation, although nowadays ‘D Day’ is only used for the landings in Normandy, according to the D-Day museum. The name came about because the day before D Day would be referred to as ‘D-1’ and the day after as ‘D+1’ and two days after ‘D+2’ etc. Hours in military terminology also work the same way with ‘H-Hour’ being used for the landing time.

It's time to register for our 11th Normandy Camporee, only 40 days away - don't miss out!

Normandy Amateur Radio Station

During our Camporee 2024, an amateur radio station will be accessible to participants where they can share their experiences of the Camporee with the outside world with voice connections.

As a bonus, participants will be encouraged to take on a challenge as part of the Messenger of Peace program. The challenge is based on the Messenger of Peace program and consists of the following:

  • Make a short-written message that can be transmitted worldwide in English, French, German, or Dutch
  • Focus with your message on people and/or circumstances.
  • Your message should eventually have influence once the message is transmitted.
  • Realize that the transmission will be live on the air on amateur radio bands, monitored by amateur radio operators and official national telecommunication agencies.

Entry for this challenge can be done on-site at the Omaha Beach Museum, no later than Friday 19 April 2024, 19.00 hours local time. Keep a look out for the flag below, Staff members of the Dutch Radio Scouts or ask the museum staff for assistance.

A live transmission will be sometime on Saturday 20 April, in close coordination with those participants who are selected to send our message.

When you leave the site, you will not only have understood the strategic choice and the reasons for success at Utah Beach, but you will also have contributed to the preservation and transmission of the memory of these extraordinary men.

The Airborne Museum

Being a World War II Museum, particularly tackling the events of the Normandy D-Day, as parents, it is natural to wonder if it is appropriate for children. The museum’s team took great care in accommodating its settings to allow children to enjoy the museum safely. The digital augmented reality device available to all at the museum, our Histopad, has had great success with children. Moreover, spectacular scenes and interactive screens intertwine during the visit, and there are several immersive and pedagogical devices such as the parachute jump simulator scattered throughout the museum.
