The Sankofa Collaborative Weekly Resource

The calendar is pushing toward spring but these cold, rainy days have us wanting to do little more than curl up with a good book. Here are a few titles (and a Netflix documentary) to keep you occupied until better weather makes its appearance. We've even included reflections from a best-selling author and a book that is scheduled for publication in August, so you can get an early start on building your beach reading list!

The Trent House Association will host a talk on dissent in American democracy, focusing on the actions of women. Ralph Young will discuss his latest book American Patriots: A Short History of Dissent, in which he chronicles the key role women’s participation in dissent has played in the shaping of the United States. He explains that activists are not protesting against America but rather pushing the country to live up to its ideals. His talk will focus on the valuable role of dissenting women from Abigail Adams to Gloria Steinem and Tarana Burke.

The Sankofa Collaborative helps people learn about, understand, and discuss African American history in schools, museums, libraries, civic groups, and other settings.

The Collaborative is the work of five New Jersey organizations - 1804 Consultants, Grounds For Sculpture, The New Jersey Historical Society, Stoutsburg Sourland African American Museum, and the William Trent House Museum. Our programs and website are made possible through generous grants from the New Jersey Council for the Humanities and the New Jersey Historical Commission.

Sankofa, a word from the Twi language of Ghana, translates to "go back and get it." It is often depicted by a bird with its body facing forward and its head turned back, holding a precious egg. This and other Sankofa symbols remind us of the importance of learning from the past.
