Lane Closures and Traffic Changes

March 20 - March 26, 2023

The following construction-related lane closures and traffic changes are planned to occur in the I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project corridor. Travelers should expect potential delays when traveling in this area, and are encouraged to visit 511virginia.org for current information on travel conditions and work zones in Virginia. All construction-related work and closures are subject to change based on weather and other factors.

  • Nighttime multi-lane closures on I-495 North and South, including triple left lane closures on I-495 South throughout the project corridor.
  • Daytime and nighttime single lane closures on Georgetown Pike at the bridge over I-495.
  • Daytime narrowing on the Georgetown Pike West/I-495 South interchange ramps.
  • Daytime and nighttime lane and shoulder closures on the Dulles Toll Road and Dulles Access Road just east and west of I-495.

I-495 North


Monday, March 20, through Thursday, March 23, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Single right lane closures on northbound I-495 between Lewinsville Road and the George Washington Memorial Parkway for sound wall and barrier demolition. 


Tuesday, March 21, through Friday, March 24, 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Double left lane closures on northbound I-495 between Georgetown Pike and the George Washington Memorial Parkway for barrier placement.


I-495 South


Monday, March 20, through Thursday, March 23, 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Single right lane closures on southbound I-495 between Lewinsville Road and the George Washington Memorial Parkway for sound wall and barrier demolition.


Monday, March 20, through Friday, March 24, 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Triple left lane closures on southbound I-495 throughout the project corridor for joint repairs. Note: this work is projected to take place nightly through the spring as weather conditions allow.


Friday, March 24, through Saturday, March 25, 9:30 p.m. to 7 a.m.

GEORGETOWN PIKE INTERCHANGE 


Monday, March 20, through Thursday, March 23, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The right lane on westbound Georgetown Pike will be closed at the bridge over I-495 for bridge abutment demolition.


Tuesday, March 21, through Friday, March 24, 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The right lanes on eastbound and westbound Georgetown Pike will be closed at the bridge over I-495 for paving work.


Tuesday, March 21, through Friday, March 24, 9:30 p.m. to 5 a.m.

The Georgetown Pike onramp to southbound I-495 and the southbound I-495 offramp to Georgetown Pike will be narrowed (no lane closures) to support bridge paving work.


DULLES CORRIDOR INTERCHANGE 


Dulles Toll Road

Single right lane closure on the eastbound Dulles Toll Road at the I-495 interchange for bridge pier construction


Monday, March 20, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Shoulder closure on the westbound Dulles Toll Road east of the I-495 interchange for geotechnical boring work.


Monday, March 20, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Single left lane closure on the westbound Dulles Toll Road from Rt. 123 to the I-495 interchange for attenuator installation.


Tuesday, March 21, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Single left lane closure on the westbound Dulles Toll Road from Rt. 123 to the I-495 interchange for geotechnical boring work.


Wednesday, March 22, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Single left lane closure on the eastbound Dulles Toll Road just before the exit to southbound I-495 for geotechnical boring work.


Dulles Access Road


Monday, March 20, through Wednesday, March 22, 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Single right lane closure on the westbound Dulles Access Road from the Dulles Toll Road split to the I-495 interchange for barrier and attenuator installation.


LIVE OAK DRIVE


Monday, March 20, through Friday, March 24, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Flagging operations to alternate single traffic lanes will be in effect on Live Oak Drive to support earthwork to build a temporary ramp.

Traffic Changes

I-495 South Overnight Triple Lane Closures


Reminder: Nightly triple lane closures began March 6 on southbound I-495 for joint repair work. These overnight closures will continue through spring as weather conditions allow. Closures began near the American Legion Bridge and will progress south on the approximately 2.5-mile 495 NEXT project corridor. At least one lane will remain open to traffic at all times. most of this work and related overnight closures will occur on weeknights, though some will occur during weekend overnights. New Exit Ramp for I-495 North Exit to Dulles Toll Road


Reminder: Motorists traveling on northbound I-495 heading for westbound Dulles Toll Road must take a new, earlier exit. The new exit ramp is located about one-third of a mile ahead of the old, closed Exit 45. To facilitate this new traffic pattern, I-495 has been reduced from four to three lanes for approximately one-half mile near the Dulles Corridor interchange. George Washington Memorial Parkway West at I-495


Reminder: The ramp from westbound George Washington Memorial Parkway to southbound I-495 (Capital Beltway) was reduced from two lanes to one lane to make room for a construction vehicle haul route that will be separated from traffic by a physical barrier. This traffic change will be in effect throughout construction on the 495 NEXT project. Learn more about the traffic change here.

Project Background

The I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project will extend the existing 495 Express Lanes north by two-and-a-half miles from the Dulles Corridor interchange to the George Washington Memorial Parkway interchange in the vicinity of the American Legion Bridge. The project will provide new and improved connections at the Dulles Corridor and George Washington Memorial Parkway.


Other project benefits include four miles of new bicycle and pedestrian connections including a shared-use path parallel to I-495 from Lewinsville Road to near Live Oak Drive, replacement or rehabilitation of seven bridges with pedestrian accommodations, replacement of nine existing noise walls and construction of a new noise wall, environmental improvements introducing stormwater management facilities and funding of restoration at Scotts Run stream, and dedicated funding to support transit improvements in the corridor including new bus service over the American Legion Bridge. 

 

495 NEXT is a public-private partnership project between the Commonwealth of Virginia and Transurban, operator of the existing 495 Express Lanes. Lane Construction is the design-build contractor for the project. The new extended lanes are scheduled to open in 2025.
