CELEBRATIONS AND OBSERVANCES | |
Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month
April is autism awareness and acceptance month! World Autism Awareness Day was first designated by the United Nations General Assembly in 2007. The resolution, known as "62/139," declared April 2nd as World Autism Awareness Day to highlight the need to improve the quality of life of individuals with autism so they can lead full and meaningful lives. Since then, every year, organizations, communities, and individuals worldwide have participated in various events and initiatives to raise awareness and promote autism acceptance.
The theme of World Autism Awareness Day this year is 'Empowering Autistic Voices' which aims at providing more support and power to individuals with this condition, to ensure they lead a meaningful life and even pursue successful careers.
Here are ways you can bring support and awareness:
-
Learn more about Autism Spectrum Disorder and Neurodiversity.
-
Learn about Autism Spectrum Disorder through local resources.
-
Support local organizations and events.
-
Lights! Camera! Autism! is a celebration and showcase of the talents of many autistic adults in art, film, and music hosted by and benefiting the Autism Society San Diego. The event is on April 27, 2024, from 5:30 PM-9:00 PM. You can learn more here.
