Children's Church during the Sermon

THE METHODIST MESSENGER

Making disciples of Jesus Christ who worship passionately, love extravagantly, and witness boldly.

The amazing John Wesley, in his sermon on "The Use of Money," described money as "an excellent gift of God, answering the noblest ends."  Wesley saw the use of our talents and abilities to earn a living as gifts from God.  As with any gift, what better way to express appreciation for a gift than to use it.  God’s gifts are practical and are meant to be used by us. Each person is uniquely gifted, but we are truly expected to do what we can with what we have.

Unused gifts are unused opportunities. Potential good is no good unless the potential is released in the world. God’s potential good through us is nothing until each of us deploys our gifts for his glory.

To continue Wesley’s quote, "In the hands of his (God’s) children," Wesley said, "it (money) is food for the hungry, drink for the thirsty, raiment (clothing) for the naked: it gives to the traveler and the stranger a place to lay his head”. In other words, Methodists believed that money was to be used for God’s kingdom and glory. Food, clothing, shelter, and the like were to be considered gifts of God through our giving. Through our giving, potential becomes reality - the reality of the Body of Christ alive and active in the world today! Through giving, our church supports itself and reaches out far beyond ourselves into the lives of others. We declare that we are God’s children using God’s gifts in and through First Methodist Church Center, Texas. We declare God’s faithfulness in and through our lives. Through our giving God’s potential is released to be a present reality. Through our giving we express our gratitude to God for the gifts, abilities and opportunities which have come from him.

Is God asking too much of us when he commands us to be faithful with our gifts? Is it too much to be like God; to be generous to a fault? We will never be as generous as our Heavenly Father who sent his Son to us, but surely, we can be grateful children who are generous through our giving. I encourage you to make the most of the opportunities you have in our home for our faith at First Methodist. May the Lord continue to richly bless you as you bless him.

"For I have learned to be content with whatever I have . . .

for I can do everything through Christ who gives me strength." Philippians 4:11, 13

Paul gave this good advice almost two thousand years ago. We as modern Christians need to be reminded of how much ground we lose when we forget the powerful force that into which we can tap when the world, friends, and family disappoint us. Jesus is closer than a phone call, e-mail, or family. He is never closed on Sunday and is available every day of the year 24 hour a day. Precious Lord, help us to be ever mindful of the needs of others. Help us to forgive the folks that offended us (they probably didn't mean to do so.) And please Lord, help us to remember to ask your advice as we struggle with these worldly decisions. Amen.  (Lucretia Bussey)
