January 2024

This past December, the Schmidt College of Medicine faculty and staff gathered for a memorable evening filled with warmth, joy, and camaraderie to celebrate the holiday season. Mark your calendars for another festive evening of shared celebrations and meaningful connections on December 6, 2024!

+ Palm Beach Medical Society

Dean Curtis Whitehair, M.D., Dr. Michael Dennis, Dr. Allison Ferris, and Dr. Lisa Clayton along with our Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine residents were honored to attend the Palm Beach County Medical Society 2023 Gala on December 2nd! It was a night filled with gratitude and celebration as physicians were honored for their selfless commitment to the health and safety of the Palm Beach County community.

+ Faculty Highlights

Congratulations to Dr. Adam Wyatt, Associate Professor of Social Medicine and Director, Office of Program Evaluation and Assessment, for being recognized for completing the Association of College and University Educator’s (ACUE) course and earning a nationally recognized certificate in effective teaching practices.

Florida Atlantic University has partnered with the Association of College and University Educators (ACUE) to offer faculty members the opportunity to participate in ACUE's micro credential offerings in effective online teaching practices. Faculty who completed all four micro credentials earned a nationally recognized Certificate in Effective College Instruction, the only college teaching credential endorsed by the American Council on Education (ACE).

Dr. Adam Wyatt received a $7,000 grant from the Society of Directors of Research in Medical Education for his project at the intersection of data visualization (DV) and competency-based education models (CBME). The initiative addresses the growing importance of data science in medical education, particularly in tracking student progress within non-standardized curricula. Wyatt aims to offer practical insights by exploring the convergence of DV and CBME literature, demonstrating the application of interdisciplinary knowledge in enhancing medical education.

Dr. Adam Wyatt was recently elected to the Board of Directors for the Society for College and University Planning (SCUP). SCUP is an inclusive community of practice in integrated planning that advances colleges and universities.

Congratulations to Rohit Merugu, M3, for his successful CPC Grand Rounds case presentation!

With moderator Dr. Jennifer Caceres, alongside multi-specialty panelists, Dr. Larry Bush (Infectious Diseases), Dr. Michele Retrouvey (Radiology), and Dr. Caroline Elliott (Pathology), Rohit presented the case to his fellow medical students in an interactive presentation, and successfully identified the illness in his patient.

On December 18, 2023, members of the Schmidt College of Medicine Pediatric Interest group delivered toys for children of all ages to the Florida Department of Health-PBC.

Without that contribution, the Volunteer Services Program would be unable to provide gifts to all the parents in need that seek services at the Delray Beach Health Center.

Thanks to all the students, faculty and staff that made the toy drive a success!

Our medical students attended UCF's 6th Annual Regional Conference. M2s Esin Bulut, Soojung Choi, Goodness Okwaraji, Shannon Gallup, and Aidan Snell presented posters with the theme "Through the Eyes of a Patient: Lessons in Humanistic Care."

Sara Burgoa, also an M2, represented the Florida Atlantic Student-Led Free Clinic Initiative at the Florida Clinics panel, aiming to unite medical students in Florida to discuss student-run free clinics and community-engagement programs. The event featured keynote speeches, panel talks, workshops, and more, providing valuable learning and growth opportunities for all attendees.

+ GME

The Florida Atlantic University Psychiatry Residency is proud to announce that PGY4 residents, Dr. Anh-Vu Nguyen and Dr. Christian Maxwell have successfully matched into fellowship programs for the coming year.

Celebrating some of our medical students as they successfully completed their first hospital experience at Bethesda Hospital! The day was marked by excitement, anticipation, and exploration of hospital medicine guided by our dedicated Internal Medicine residents. It was a valuable opportunity for our aspiring doctors to gain an in-depth understanding of the challenges and rewards that come with caring for patients in a hospital setting.

+ Department of Research

A special meeting was held to discuss the inaugural Amyloid-related Diseases Summit, an integral part of The FairfaxWood Health Innovation Technology Initiative.

Dobbs, FairfaxWood Chair of Clinical Neuroscience, led the planning meeting, attended by Florida Atlantic scientists specializing in amyloid research.
