2024 Thank a Resident Day drew record number of sites recognizing resident physicians and fellows
Thank a Resident Day was held on Friday, February 23, and social media was filled with activities and beaming faces. Thank you to the more than 600 Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS) chapters and residency program sites that participated, and thank you to the 150,000+ resident physicians and fellows who care with such compassion every day. We see you, and we appreciate you!
There were a ton of smiles and some fun axe-throwing as diagnostic and interventional radiology program residents from Corewell Health + Michigan State University's College of Human Medicine gathered together in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to celebrate.
Residents of Mayagüez Medical Center's Family Medicine Program in Puerto Rico shared breakfast (including the sweet goodness of frappe drinks!!) and good company during the celebration.

70 GHHS chapters celebrate 2024 Solidarity Week
The 2024 Solidarity Week for Compassionate Patient Care, February 12-16, sparked participation by nearly 70 GHHS chapters across the world. Many chapters took inspiration from Valentine’s Day and merged the themes of love and creativity. Here are just a few examples:

West Virginia University School of Medicine medical students (pictured) hosted an inspiring lecture series, which included a talk led by creators of the "Healthcare is Human" project Dr. Ryan McCarthy (a speaker at the 2024 Gold Humanism Summit!) and Renée K. Nicholson, MFA, director of the Humanities Center at WVU. In addition, Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine medical students delivered care packages with puzzle books, pens, and blankets, to patients and sat with them to keep them company during their dialysis sessions.

Two Gold Foundation Opportunities for Students
Dr. Hope Babette Tang Humanism in Healthcare Essay Contest
Deadline: March 13, 11:59 p.m. PT
The Gold Foundation invites medical and nursing students to enter the Dr. Hope Babette Tang Humanism in Healthcare Essay Contest and engage in a reflective writing exercise around a student's personal experience of humanistic care or stories of family and friends.

The essay contest is named in honor of Hope Babette Tang, MD, an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center from 1992 until her death in 1998. Her last position was Pediatric Medical Director of the hospital’s HIV clinic. Dr. Tang’s devotion and generosity to the care of the children and infants with HIV infection in New York City was an inspiration to her colleagues and her students. Her approach to medicine combined a boundless enthusiasm for her work, intellectual rigor, and deep compassion for her patients. In sum, Dr. Tang was an exemplar of humanistic care, and we continue to hear stories to this day about her grace, kindness, and humility.

Gold Foundation joins with the Henry Schein Cares Foundation & partners on Prevention is Power campaign
The Gold Foundation has partnered with the Henry Schein Cares Foundation on its new Prevention is Power campaign, a humanistic initiative focused on strengthening patient use of preventive care.

"All people deserve access to preventive care and screenings," said Gold Foundation President & CEO Dr. Kathleen Reeves. "Not only is such care critical for addressing health concerns early, but regular interaction with healthcare professionals helps build trust and connection, which form the basis for humanistic care.”

Henry Schein, Inc. is a founding member of the Gold Corporate Council, a group of leading healthcare companies that work to elevate humanism in healthcare. We are grateful for Henry Schein, Inc. and Henry Schein Cares Foundation's efforts to make humanistic care more accessible.

Using Humanism to Navigate Healthcare in a Polarized World

The 2023-24 Gold Humanism Honor Society Initiative, The Gold Compass: Using Humanism to Navigate Different Perspectives and Create Human-Centered Care, invites GHHS members to act as leaders in creating opportunities or modeling the search for ways to interact via civil discourse. Mitigating this divide—the separation we feel within ourselves and with one another—may have the power to reinforce the most essential components of what it means to be both a human and a healer.

Find community at the inaugural Compassion in Medical Education (C-MEd) Forum presented by the Sanford Institute for Empathy and Compassion from Monday, July 8, to Tuesday, July 9. The Forum will offer a unique opportunity for other schools of medicine to learn about our innovative empathy and compassion programming and curricula directly from our experts. The goal is to help attendees transform learning at their respective institutions. C-MEd is intended for medical educators, deans/academic leadership, and anatomy lab directors at schools of medicine, as well as healthcare practitioners at teaching hospitals.

The latest edition of the Jeffrey Silver Humanism in Healthcare Research Roundup features 8 recently published papers on humanism in healthcare, compiled by Dr. Bharat Kumar.

These papers tackle important questions, including:

  1. How do medical students try to bridge didactic education with clinical practice?
  2. Can virtual reality simulations help to foster empathy among healthcare students?
  3. How does vacation length and EHR coverage impact professional fulfillment and burnout among physicians?

If you would like to receive an email alert when future Research Roundups are published, please sign up.
