Spotlight Photo of the Week: The Bishop Kelly Orchestra, joined by the St. Mark's Orchestra and some "Silent Monks", performed the Halleluiah Chorus from Handel's Messiah at the winter music concert this week. In addition to Orchestra, BK's Band, Choir, and Guitar Classes also performed to a packed house! Congratulations to Mrs. Cooper, Mr. Peters and all of the Bishop Kelly and St. Mark's students who performed. It was an excellent concert that got everyone in the Christmas Spirit!

A Note from Bill and Sarah

As we end first semester, I am extremely grateful to all of our families for sharing your children with us. Your children have shined physically, mentally, and spiritually this semester!

We are always looking for ways to help students grow in spirit, mind, and body. One of the ways we are seeking to improve is with a change to Office Hours for next semester. Office Hours on Tuesday will now be from 7:45-8:30 a.m. Students will be released from school at 2:45 p.m. on Tuesdays, and teachers will NOT be available for Office Hours after school, as they will be using that time for collaboration. Office Hours on Thursday will remain from 2:45-3:15 p.m.

We have several hopes for this change. By having one morning and one afternoon session, students who have activities one end of the day or the other will be able to access Office Hours at least once a week. Also, students fatigue during the school day, so having one Office Hour time before school will help them be fresh. The morning time also provides a longer Office Hours for those who need to make up tests.

This change is a one semester pilot; we will evaluate its effectiveness before we set Office Hour times for the 2025-26 school year.

We encourage all students to use Office Hours:

  • to ask questions of their teacher
  • to get extra help
  • to complete homework
  • to work on projects
  • to make up work

Have a blessed Christmas break. We look forward to an awesome second semester!

Reflections from Father Vance

Bishop Kelly has exciting news to share! We have recently learned that Father Greg Vance was granted permission by his provincial superior to extend his assignment at Bishop Kelly until the summer of 2027! We are so blessed to have Father Vance here at BK, and we are THRILLED to have him for at least another two and a half years!

BISHOP KELLY HIGH SCHOOL’S VERSION OF “TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS”

BY FR. GREG VANCE, S.J.

‘Twas the week before break, and throughout BK’s halls,

You could feel the anxiety, it seeped through the walls!

Stress about finals, and projects and grades,

Was felt all around, would there come any aides?

Every student was locked away in their heads

Cramming and stressing, giving in to their dreads.

But Today we are challenged to listen, serene,

To a vision of BK we might never have seen.

When you reach out, beyond selfishness and greed

To a classmate or a teacher, understanding their need,

You fulfill the mission that God has imparted,

And you bring more to life what Jesus Christ started.

This world can be lonely, stressful and cruel,

And at times, we may dread even coming to school.

But it is here together that we can even dare conceive,

Of a world based on love, running on what we believe.

No place is perfect, or free of all sin,

And at times we don’t sacrifice, only preferring to win.

But today, as we gather to listen and pray,

We remember that God will return to us one day.

That child in the manger, so innocent and sweet,

Will one day be nailed by his hands and his feet,

To the cross of our sins, our darkness and shame,

And love us so much, that salvation we can claim!

Christmas can be happy, joyful and fun --

Friends and family to visit, relaxing to be done.

But let’s not forget, avoid or escape,

That this child is God, and our souls He did shape!

Wherever you go, and whatever you do,

On your break and in your life, my prayer for you,

Is that you remember, and let it sink in,

How MUCH you are loved, in spite of your sin.

On your break please relax, celebrate and play,

But just a few times, please remember to pray!

And try hard to see, through the craziness and hype,

That the season is upon us, and the time is now ripe,

To accept the great love and the grace and the blessing,

That God offers us as a gift, NOT for possessing,

But for sharing and giving freely to all

Who might need something from us, and to us might call.

Even if you feel lonely, confused and unsure,

There is MUCH you can give that is holy and pure.

All you need to do is start giving, and without a care,

You’ll find just how much you have within you to share.

To believe that Jesus is present to you,

In good times and bad -- in whatever you do,

Is the gift of our faith -- it’s the subject of ALL classes,

And it’s what we see every day, and at all our Masses!

Let’s help each other, both today and next week,

To get through our finals, and find what we seek,

Not wrapped in a box, or under a tree,

But right next to you now, in you and in me!

BK will be here on the day you get back,

To challenge, support you and keep you on track.

And while you’re away, give some time for the thought,

That your school is a powerful blessing you’ve got!

Blessed Christmas to all in this wonderful place,

May God fill the New Year with health and with grace.

My prayer for you all, as Christmas draws near,

Is that we all know what a special place we have here!

National Merit Commended Scholars

Owen Coyle, Beck Humphrey, Dillon Leslie, Alice Longo, and Sam Revier

Academic Excellence

These five seniors have been designated Commended Students in the National Merit Scholarship Program.  Their high Selection Index scores place them among the top students nationwide who took the 2023 PSAT.  Only 34,000 students in the nation receive this designation.  We praise you all for this achievement and your overall academic excellence!

BK Staff of the Week

Mrs. Lorissa Horn

Faith

Mrs. Horn does an amazing job with our retreats.  She makes it a super enjoyable experience and puts so much thought and effort into it. Mrs. Horn also makes Campus Ministry so fun. She gets to know all of her students individually and takes the time to talk to each of them and get their opinions. She always comes to school with a positive attitude and shows love to everyone.  She works so hard behind the scenes for all of our school masses, and her faith and love of God shine through her actions.

Get Your BK Yard Sign!

It's almost time to blanket the Treasure Valley with BK “Mini Billboards!”

During admissions season we need the help of our entire BK Community - current parents, past parents, Alumknights and Friends! The purpose of this advertising campaign is to show our community that Bishop Kelly families are everywhere, and to help people who are interested in attending recognize their friends and neighbors who could be a resource for information about BK.

Starting Monday we will make it as easy as possible for anyone who wants a yard sign, or needs to replace their sign from last year, to get their hands on one.

  • Signs will be in the grass in front of the school. If you see one, you're welcome to take it.
  • Mr. Avey will have signs at pick up and will bring one to your car if you wave him down.
  • Signs will be available in the front office, come on in and ask for one.
  • Signs will be in or near concessions at the Carley Center.
  • Signs will be in the Communications and Marketing Office
  • Your student can grab a sign from any of those places!

The signs are double sided, with space on one side to add class years, or a fun message about BK.

Please put your sign in your yard after Christmas, and leave it there until Spring Break.

We greatly appreciate your partnership with Bishop Kelly for this important piece of our Admissions Marketing!

Attendance Office Procedures

  • Parents are asked to email the school’s Attendance Office before 9:30am on the day a student will be absent from class for all or part of the school day due to an illness or an appointment. That email is attendance@bk.org
  • Bishop Kelly is a closed campus.  This means that students who have professional appointments may leave and return back to campus with a doctor's note or other documentation excusing the absence.  If a parent chooses to check out a student for a non-professional or non-medical reason, then the student will be checked out for the rest of the day.  The student may not return to school that day unless they have a doctor's note or other professional documentation. Our goal is to limit classroom disruptions and maintain the academic integrity of the classroom.  This may affect activity eligibility for the day.
  • Students must sign-out at the Attendance window when they leave campus during the school day, and sign back in at the Attendance Window with documentation when they return.

Helpful Information on the BK Website

The Bishop Kelly Website is a wealth of information. Here are a few of the most used and searched for sections of BK.org

In the Life at BK section, you'll find the majority of what BK students access every day. This includes:

In addition to those tools, parents often find these online resources helpful:

In the Support section of BK.org

And at the very bottom of every page on BK.org, you'll always find these GEMS:

There's also a very handy search tool in the upper right corner of the website.
